April 2010

The past four weeks has produced some excellent results at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir for both Fly and Ledgered Worm anglers throughout the majority of areas being fished. The weather conditions experienced, as for the same period in 2009 have once again been bright and sunny with relatively light to moderate winds, which has brought the water temperature up to what would be considered the seasonal norm, despite the extended cold period between December and March.

The area of bank known as the “Field” has, as it did last year, fished consistently well on both ledgered worm and fly with some very good bags being weighed in. Average bags are now consistently in excess of 12lbs for six fish, showing an average weight per fish caught of 2lbs plus, with a marked increase in relation to the results posted in March. Other areas which seem to be producing consistently well include; “The Big Meadow”, the woods on the western bank, “Rainbow Bay” and (for boat anglers) “The Point”.

Notable bags and fish for the past four weeks from anglers fishing fly from the boat are as follows: W Jamieson of Cardigan, 14lbs for six fish, this included a best fish of 4lbs 6ozs. D Adams of Llanelli with six fish for 14lbs 6ozs, with a best fish of 4lbs 2ozs. Brian Dalton, one of our season permit holders with six fish for 15lbs 5ozs and G Fordham of Carmarthen with the best bag of 15lbs 12ozs.

During the same period some of the best bags recorded by those opting to fish fly from the bank are as follows; Viv Griffiths of Fishguard, six fish for 11lbs 8ozs. G Davies of Milford Haven, six fish for 12lbs 10ozs. Steve Thomas of Wolfscastle (Llys-y-Fran’s 2009 Trout masters Fish-Off winner) with six fish for 13lbs 8ozs and G Morgan of Pembroke with six fish for 13lbs 9ozs.

Once again those opting to fish ledgered worm appear to be producing the heavier bags and fish these include the following: Phil Jones of Letterston with six fish for 15lbs 2ozs. Ray Muskett of Tenby with six fish for 16lbs 3ozs, Islwyn Vaughan of Llys-y-Fran with six fish for 17lbs 8ozs, Islwyn’s bag included a best fish of 6lbs 8ozs. D L Jones of Pontardulias with six fish form 17lbs 14ozs and the best bag by far, that of Peter Tadman of Haverfordwest. Peter on his last visit recorded a six fish limit of 20lbs, with a best fish of only 4lbs.

The heaviest fish landed so far this season is a Rainbow Trout of 8lbs 1oz taken by Alan Thomas of Pembroke. Alan is a season permit holder who fishes both ledgered worm and fly.
