January – March 2012, by John Sampson

The first four weeks of the 2012 season has produced some excellent sport at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir for anglers fishing either bank or boat as well as for those fishing Ledgered Worm, throughout the majority of areas available. Weather conditions for late  February early March began with some fairly chilly days but soon picked up and for the past few days, have been associated  with overcast conditions accompanied by relatively light to moderate winds, which has brought the water temperature up to what would be considered the seasonal norm of around 7.5 degrees Celsius.

The area of bank known as the “Field” has fished consistently well on both ledgered worm and fly with some very good bags being weighed in. Average bags are now generally in excess of 12lbs for six fish, showing an average weight per fish caught of 2lbs plus. Other areas which are also producing well include; “The Big Meadow” “Little Meadow”, the woods on the western bank, “Rainbow Bay” “Badgers” as well as the Field and (for boat anglers) “The Point”, “Rainbow Bay” and the top of the long arm.

Notable Bags from anglers fishing fly from the boat over the past four weeks, include the following: Ron Lewis of Carmarthen, 13lbs 4ozs for six fish, this included a best fish of 2lbs 8ozs. Brian Roberts of Ystradgynlias with six fish for 16lbs. Honours for the boat however go to Jeff Bayliss with six fish for 17lbs 2ozs. Jeff’s bag included a best fish of 3lbs 6ozs. Despite being early as regards the season and “Top Water Sport”, a large number of fish are on the surface and feeding heavily which offer good sport to those preferring floating lines.

During this reporting period some of the best bags recorded by those opting to fish fly from the bank are as follows;  J James of Crosshands with, six fish for 14lbs 10ozs. Buck Fearn of Narbeth, with six fish for 18lbs 1oz.

As for last year, once again those opting to fish ledgered worm appear to be producing the heavier bags and fish, these include the following: E Pritchard of Narbeth with six fish for 15lbs 12ozs and with a best fish of 3lbs 12ozs. D Davies of Ammanford with six fish for 16lbs 1ozs, Ray Muskett of Tenby with six fish for 16lbs 2ozs with a best fish of 4lbs 6ozs. C Johns of Freystrop with six fish for 17lbs 8ozs and 18lbs 1ozs.

Llys-y-Fran will be hosting an Open Competition on 13th May 2012. The competition will be fished across all permitted methods, which will include Fly Boat and Bank, as well as Ledgered Worm. Catch limit on the day will be 8 fish with a £4.00 entry fee for the prize pool on top of the permit price for those taking part.

Potential prizes will be increased as DCWW will offer a number of free days fishing external of the prize pool.
