The past week has seen a marked improvement in the bag averages for anglers fishing Fly from the bank or boat; fish are now being seen in numbers feeding heavily on the surface throughout the day and in most areas of the Reservoir. This is almost certainly due to the rapid cooling of the surface layers that we have experienced during the past two weeks.

Anglers fishing Ledgered Worm are now, although good bags are still being recorded, beginning to feel the pinch so to speak. Those anglers knowing the water are still able to take fish in numbers, especially in the areas of the Reservoir that offer shallower regions. A working Knowledge of the water during this period is obviously more than beneficial if the angler in question wants to catch fish using this method. Ranger staff on duty are always more than willing to assist anglers who visit the Reservoir infrequently, relevant information as to how the water is fishing, along with suggested areas and tactics can also be found on the fishing information board situated outside the shop.

Brian Dalton of Haverfordwest, one of our season permit holders recorded the best bag during the past seven days for an angler fishing Fly from the bank; his six fish taken on Saturday during an afternoon visit totalled 13lbs 8ozs with a best fish of 3lbs 2ozs. Phillip Lumber also of Haverfordwest recorded the best bag for an angler fishing Fly from the boat during the same period. His six fish which included the best fish of the week at 4lbs 6ozs totalled 15lbs 9ozs, with all being taken on dry flies. Well done Phil.

Michael Gillard of Aberdare however takes the honours for the past week, his six fish taken whilst fishing Ledgered Worm totalled a more than respectful 16lbs 10zs. It should be emphasised that this was an adult and child permit which allows for up to two children under the age of twelve to fish on the same day permit as either the parent or accompanying adult.

This week’s free permit from all day permits submitted goes to Gorden John of Spittal.
