Ron Lands a Whopper!

An avid trout fisherman from Wallingford won’t need to talk about the ‘one that got away’ after his Lucky Dip ticket returned a whopping £245,142 win in the Lotto draw from Wednesday 20th October, 2010.

Retired printer Ron Cook (77), who lives with his younger brother Peter (64), has been playing the National Lottery for ten years counting on Lucky Dip tickets to give him a win, and whilst he has had a few small bites, nothing had prepared him for this monster catch. For Ron, an active member of the Millets Farm Fly Fishing Club, the win means a financially secure future for himself and Peter, but no new fishing gear!

Lottery winnerA stunned and happy Ron said of his win, “I thought I had four numbers and it was only when Ashley, the manager at my local newsagent KP Stationers, checked the numbers, that we both realised I’d won a bit more than I’d first thought! The best part of the win is knowing that Peter is set-up for life. He is my youngest brother and things haven’t always been easy for him but I promised my parents I’d look after him, and now I really can. I’ve also told my sister Joan that I’ll be paying for her daughter and husband to come over from Canada for a visit. Other than that, I think I’m going to mull things over for a bit. I love my trout fishing and try to get out every Saturday and Tuesday but I don’t think I’ll get any new gear – I’m just not convinced that the expensive gear makes you a better fisherman! ”

Ron is a Wallingford man through and through. His father was the town’s Macebearer for 15 years and he has lived in the same house for three quarters of a century, moving there with his parents and seven siblings in 1935.

The winning Lucky Dip ticket was bought from KP Stationers in Wallingford’s Market Place.

This Saturday’s (30 October, 2010) Lotto jackpot is an estimated £7 million.
