This unique DVD explores and shares the deep love that anglers have for fishing, including the folklore, philosophy and nobility of angling, motivations, secrets, tips, techniques, and the mystique of waters. It dares to confront the question, “Are anglers nuts?” Or is their quest a noble one? Or both? And is there a danger of evolving technology transforming fishing into a NASCAR kind of sport?
The first DVD in a new series, “A Love Affair with Angling- Disc 1: Falling in Love” is a unique companion to Dr. Harold Lyon’s popular book, Angling in the Smile of the Great Spirit. It is a distillation of some 27 hours of oral history and folklore of Winnipesaukee’s master anglers and beautiful scenes captured on the Lake. It is edited to examine what is the love that motivates those anglers. The new DVD contains in-depth interviews with the 15 Master Anglers featured in the book who, collectively, have over 6 centuries of angling experience. The book is also due to be reprinted in late November 2006 as both a new revised paperback edition and an attractively bound limited collectors’ edition of 1000 hardbacks. The new DVD was created with Dr. Lyon’s talented, non-angler friend and foil, Dr. Vince Giuliano, a skilled and talented videographer, actor and computer scientist. The DVD gives readers a glimpse into diversity, skill, and motivation of a revered group of colorful anglers, like retired teacher, Chuck French and forester, Carl Gebhardt,” Dr Lyon says. “Or the late 96-year-young Barbara Cotton, the oldest living proprietor of an Orvis Fly shop in America – the Opechee Trading Post. Rick Davis , who also heads up the Winni Salmon Derby; Bill Martel, of Martel’s Bait and Tackle; Jim Warner from Wolfeboro, a famous fly creator; Al Stewart who recently passed on and lived on tiny two-mile island with no electricity; Mario DeCarolis, one of the more colorful, successful, and humorous of the anglers; Ted St. Onge, the Master Angler who stalks trophy salmon relying mainly on water temperature as his guide; the late Paul Philippe, an accountant named ‘Bean Counter’ on the marine radio, who did empirical studies of various lures, depth and techniques; Steve Perry, head of the Inland Fisheries Division of N.H. Fish &Game; Alan Nute, owner of AJs Bait & Tackle in Meredith; and the two youngest Master Anglers, both of whom are excellent fishing guides, Travis Williams and Jay Parent.” A Chart of Secrets is included with the DVD with the average trolling speed of the 15 Anglers, their best lures, and average depths by month for each game fish. Dr. Lyon is a graduate of West Point, served as a Ranger-paratrooper officer, Director of Education for the Gifted, project officer for “Sesame Street,” assistant to the president of a university, faculties of Georgetown, Antioch, Dartmouth Medical School, Notre Dame College, Universities of Massachusetts and Munich. He received the Gold Medal in the 1990 International Film & TV Festival of New York. He’s author of 5 other books and has been angling for over 67 years. Besides bringing to bear his creative media skills as co Producer-Director with Hal, Dr. Giuliano, a Ph.d. from Harvard, appears in the video as ‘Fishing Grumpmaster,’ a non-fishermen foil challenging the basic assumptions of angling. This unique work is an exploration of why fishing is so important to seasoned anglers – their optimism, hopes, and adventures.
