Alot of the stillwaters weren’t ice free until the middle of the week. Alan Wilkie fished the River Great Ouse and landed a specimen 6lb 6oz chub on a mackerel section.

On the South Lagoon John Stafferton caught a 10lb 2oz pike and specimen 3lb perch while nearby Michael Walker banked an 11lb 8oz pike. Bream are being caught regularly from the Lagoon to 6lb.

On the adjacent North House Lake Steven McIver tempted a 17lb common carp.

Flitwick based father and son in law pair Pete Francis and Mark Brooks visited the Mere midweek, fishing about a foot off the bottom and were rewarded with plenty of roach, rudd and crucians. Pete lost a carp that took his pole fished maggot into some snags.

Pensioner member David de la Mare used unconventional tactics when his bites dried up, he switched to slices of ham from his sandwiches! His off the wall attempts were rewarded with a string of palm sized roach.

Pete Brown fished Woodlands and described the going as hard. He had a few small roach to pole fished maggot.

The colder wind on Sunday made hard work on the motorway bank of the Mere, but anglers fishing around the corner in the sheltered water really reaped the benefits. Two such anglers were Michael Ward and Bedford based Steve Morey who had carp, tench, crucians and roach a-plenty to red maggot, with Michael feeding dead reds to keep his swim alive.

Trevor Mead and Jason Adams fished Woodlands on Sunday, but with water temperatures still well down, both struggled for bites.

Out of the two waters The Mere is really a banker for a bite at this time of year as the much shallower and unshaded water warms quickly, but do keep an eye on the wind direction as this can kill the fishing very quickly.
