New Fishery Manager to develop angling on the Lower Scone beats of the River Tay

Mansfield Estates have appointed a new Fishery Manager to develop angling on the Lower Scone beats of the River Tay.

Iain Kirk, who comes to Scone following 7 years in charge of angling operations at Dunkeld House fishing, aims to turn Scone into a centre of excellence for anglers from across the world.

“The Tay is an iconic river and one that many anglers aspire to fish”, said Ian. “The fishing on the Waulkmill, Fishponds and Almondmouth beats is unquestionably world-class and it’s therefore important that the quality of services and facilities available to visiting anglers matches up to expectations. With anglers becoming increasingly discerning and expectations growing at a fast rate, it’s vital that we focus on developing the infrastructure for anglers and non-anglers alike, to ensure they not only have the best possible experience but are inspired to return. In essence, we need to make visiting anglers feel really special and ensure our beats are pleasant places to come to”.

“As a holder of the Scottish Game Angler Instructors’ Certificate in double-handed fly casting, I’m really keen to offer three-day courses where beginners can come and learn fly fishing and practice casting” said Iain.

Iain Kirk“The ‘Fishponds’ beat actually takes its name from 1864 when the Earl of Mansfield dug out a number of ponds and stocked them with salmon hatchlings which were then released into the river to enhance stocks. Although the ponds are grassed over now I’d like to reinstate and establish them as somewhere beginners can come and practice their casting”.

“As Fishponds is a relatively small and safe beat with only five rods, we’ll be able to offer a bespoke experience for novice and experienced anglers alike. We’ll provide ghillies to look after them during their day on the river and they’ll be offered whatever help and assistance they need to get the most out of their visit. And more than that, we’ll make sure they know their custom is appreciated”.

Iain is also keen to develop links with local accommodation businesses.

“Whilst many of our anglers visit just for the day, an increasing number are taking short breaks with groups of friends or wives and partners, so we’re keen to work with local operators to develop and promote fishing packages combining a stay in quality accommodation with a great fishing experience”.

In an exciting new development, fishing on the Lower Scone beats will be extended this year until the end of October, providing an extra two weeks of fishing at normal ‘end of season’ prices.

“This is a really exciting time for us”, said Iain. “We’ve never fished beyond the middle of October, so this will be a great opportunity for anglers seeking a new challenge. We’ve already had enquiries from all corners of the world, including Russia and the United States, and bookings are filling up fast. Anglers looking to take advantage of this unique opportunity should get in touch now to reserve their spot”.
