Junior angler Robbie Fairfull (aged 12) first fishing experience turned out to be a day he will never forget.

Fishing the renowned Lower Kinnaird beat, Saturday 24th March 2012, arguably one of the most prolific fly fishing beats on the entire middle Tay, Robbie Fairfull hooked into his first ever fish a 20lb sea liced salmon from Ash Trees Pool on the fly, copper cascade size9. This beat has some of the best ‘holding’ fly water on the Tay

Ironically, one hour earlier Robbie was having his first casting lesson from Jock Monteith, a well known professional Scottish salmon fishing guide.

River Tay SalmonTo dispell any thoughts of beginners luck, Robbie on his fourth cast then hooked into another hard fighting double figure salmon, this time a 19lb sea licer. Robbie played both his fish which took 20 and 30 minutes respecitvely to land, uwith tuition from Jock.

Jock Monteith said, “I’ve not seen a brace of spring salmon of this quality for a long time and it’s great to see a junior catching them both. The future of angling will remain strong if we are able to encourage juniors into the sport.

“Both Robbie’s salmon were released which is great news for the future of the River Tay’s Spring salmon stocks. Most river Tay salmon anglers see the common sense in this practice,” says Jock Monteith.

FishTay report week ending Sunday 25th March: This was the best week so far with 81 salmon reported with the largest salmon of 28lb caught on the fly by Danny Fulton on the Taymount beat. Spring salmon were landed throughout the system from the Lower River to the Upper River. Success was more consistent as expected in March with good catches on Monday and Saturday throughout the river and the quality was again exceptional with more multi sea winter salmon landed.
