Environment Agency News Release

South Devon salmon anglers have been given a fortnight’s extra fishing this season in a test to find out if more salmon are returning to spawn.

The Environment Agency has extended the salmon rod fishing year on the Dart and Teign by two weeks until October 14 (2007). The season usually ends on September 30.The season has also been extended on the Torridge to the same date.

An agency spokesman said: "It is hoped the move will provide additional information on salmon returning to these rivers.

"The extension is for salmon only and all caught fish must be returned unharmed.

"It is the first time extensions have been approved on the Teign, Dart and Torridge."

An extension has operated on the Exe for the past three years.

The spokesman said anglers wishing to fish over the fortnight must have written permission from local fishing associations who are administering the experimental extension. The anglers will be required to complete a catch and release return form.
