News Release From Macmillan Cancer Support

Anglers have the chance to reel in £1000 by taking part in a charity fishing contest.

Macmillan Cancer Support is looking for hundreds of keen fishermen and women to take part in its Big Fish competition this June. The charity hopes to raise over £40,000 from the Scotland and Northern Ireland-wide contest which is being backed by celebrity angler Paul Young.

Paul, who presents tv show Hooked on Fishing, said: “The Big Fish is a great event that I’m delighted to support.

“It gives people a chance to raise money to help those affected by cancer while doing something they enjoy.

“Angling is a very popular pastime so I hope lots of people will sign up to take part and help Macmillan raise money to fund its vital services for people affected by cancer.”

Each tag will be a different colour and will either correspond to a prize of £200, £300, £500 or a booby prize.

There will also be prizes for the heaviest bag of fish and the biggest fish.

The angler who brings along the most sponsorship money on the day of the event will win the prize of a days’ fishing with Paul Young.

Macmillan’s director in Scotland and Northern Ireland, Elspeth Atkinson, said: “The number of people being diagnosed with cancer is increasing each year.

“That means there are more people in need of Macmillan’s vital services than ever before.

“By taking part in the Big Fish you will be helping us fund our services which include everything from specialist nurses and doctors to grants for cancer patients who need help paying their mortgage or fuel bills.”

All those taking part in the event must raise at least £60 in sponsorship.
