Ringwood based amenity water treatment specialist, Hydroscape, have been appointed as the exclusive UK and Ireland distributors for Vertex, the industry leaders in subsurface lake bed aeration systems. The systems operate by transferring air from a small, secure, shore mounted compressor via self-weighted airlines to a number of lakebed air diffusers.
Vertex lake aeration systems are acknowledged for their technically advanced membrane “micro bubble†bottom air diffusers that increase oxygen levels throughout the whole water depth, break down thermal stratification, increase beneficial bacteria levels and reduce nutrient levels.
Vertex systems are also renowned for their high build quality, durability, performance and value for money.
The systems are self cleaning, eliminating the need for maintenance and the removal from the lake or pond bottom and the time consuming and often hazardous cleaning required for out-dated “air stone†systems.

Operating costs are less than any comparable system, with high-energy efficient, ultra quiet air generators, enabling aeration of large bodies of water with a very low horsepower air compressor.
Independent tests carried out by the Environmental Engineering department of a leading US academic institution also confirm performance of over 37,000 GPM/hp, providing higher turnover rates with less power consumed and proportional cost savings.

A typical success story for Vertex aeration systems can be found at Heron Cay, a residential development who were experiencing a number of problems in a 21 acre lake that is central to the community.
With maximum water depths of over 6 metres, stratification had resulted in a lake with severely low oxygen levels at the bottom. Having no beneficial bacteria to break down organics, heavy muck accumulation and foul odours from hydrogen sulphide were present. The lake was consuming what little available oxygen there was faster than it could be replenished and excessive nutrient levels from fertilizer run-off only worsened conditions. The lake’s Biological Oxygen Demand was extremely high.
With the brunt of summer approaching, Heron Cay had a real potential for a serious fish kill. Action needed to be taken, so the residents looked to Vertex to provide them with an efficient and cost effective method of bringing the lake back to a healthy state.
After the design and installation of a Vertex aeration system consisting of 11 diffuser stations being fed by compressors totalling only 2 –1/4 hp, Heron Cay was set up with a monitoring schedule to determine how lake dynamics were being affected. Results over a four month
period were dramatic. Within days of initial start-up, the system’s four main objectives were being realised. These being: – 1.The breakdown of temperature and oxygen stratification – the lake’s water being circulated, 2. Increased oxygen levels throughout the entire water column – creating a healthy environment for both the fish population and beneficial bacteria, 3. Decreased the lakes Biological Oxygen Demand – oxygen was no longer being consumed faster than it was being replenished, 4. The residents of Heron Cay are no longer in danger of oxygen related fish kills, odours have been eliminated and the lake is returning to natural, healthy conditions.
