4.11.22 - Marsh Benham

Bayleaf the Gardener

Another lovely day on the syndicate. Water level not much higher than last week after all that rain, but flow running quicker. Caught fish from the off, moving swims every half an hour or so. Having lost too high a number of larger fish last week, I landed all that I hooked, except one. In the weir swim, I struck into something unmoving that after a few seconds making up its mind, turned on the afterburners and my 4lb hook length never stood a chance.

I ended up without anything huge, but with most of the roach between 4 and 14 ounces and in stunning condition, it didn't matter. I ended up with 13 chublets, 37 roach, 13 dace, 12 perch (including fish of 2lbs and 1lb 12), 3 bleak and 5 brownies (3lb 7, 3lb 9, 3lb 12, 4lb 2 and 2lb 10. Another bonus to my misanthropic self - the only living creature I saw all day that didn't have a swim bladder was a kingfisher that soared up and down the narrow waterway several times.

Sorry - I could have added a pic of one of those perch, or a beautifully spotted trout, and I know last week's article also had a roach to illustrate it, but this was such a stunning fish I couldn't resist it.
