    Method hook length in silt

    Suppose if I feel the rig down it will land on the silt rather than in it to a certain degree. Is it worth spodding a couple of big rockets full every cast? How regular should I cast?

     

    The lake has a good head of doubles up to 40s, 5 acres, quite pressured, but moderate to hard depending on the mood of the fish!

    I know that a famous carp angler caught on this method there so it must work. They used a 1.5-2oz feeder, big method bix, bait tucked into the ball, foam nugget on the hook. Just not sure of the hook length. I'll go with 6 inches of silkworm and see how that goes.

    i fish in a silt filled place aswell and i have 8 inch rig. when i cast out all i do is pull lead back VERY SLOWLY just so it pops out of the silt try and get he lightest lead u cann personaly i use 1.1oz but even i think thats to heavy :blink: .

    Do you put the bait in the groundbait ball and do you use a soft braid or a coated braid as a hooklength?

    Method hook length in silt

    Hi friends,

     

    I'm trying the method for the first time this week. Just a simple marine groundbait, pellet, particle and tiny boilie concoction around a 1.5oz Korda feeder.

     

    I'm very confident with my normal bottom rigs. But I understand you need to use 3 inch silkworm hooklengths on the method on gravel. However, I'm fishing in silt, where when you cast out and feel the lead down, it will still work its way approx 2 inches in some places with a 1.5oz lead.

     

    1) How long should my hooklength be in this silty situation? 6 inches?

     

    2) How can we better estimate the depth of silt where we are fishing. I've tried the wool on hooklength method, but it takes a good while to stain the wool after casting out!

    Glad you enjoyed the place. It has a certain something :-D

     

    I'm on there Friday and can't wait.

     

    I went last Fri and had a 20lb 8oz mirror and a 13.5lb common by moving swims after the 8am re-draw. On some carpcraftbaits boilies. Boilies do work, but as hookbaits only at the moment I think.

     

    It can have its off days, but mostly good days. As you say, wrong day that's all. Don't forget to stalk next time too if you get a chance.

    Cuttle Mill

    Can anyone give me any info on Cuttle Mill in Sutton Coldfield? All info welcome, where to fish what tactics to use etc...

    I fish there quite regular. Website is www.cuttle-mill.com

     

    Lots of info, galleries, etc.

     

    Beds of bait are spooking the fish at the moment.

     

    Pellet hookbaits are doing well.

     

    Move your hookbaits around your swim every hours or so. Cast to jumping fish.

     

    Simple rigs, 8 inch hooklenghs with 2-2.5 leads. Feather your cast and feel the lead down.

     

    That should get you some :-D

    Reels?

    Don't buyt the Wychwood Extremis Freespin Reels. The bail arm closes sometimes on hard casts. Snapping off £6 of end tackle a time! Save some money in the long run and buy Shimano 6000RE or the Daiwa Emcast Evo 5500 that I am upgrading too :-D

    From baitrunners to big pits

    Hi all!

     

    Nice to be a new member on the forums :-D

     

    I have some Wychwood Rogue Freespins. Nice reels, not quite Shimano baitrunners, but not far off in everyday use.

     

    Its time I upgrade, and I'm considering some bigger pit type reels. But I don't know whether I'm keen on switching from baitrunner type mechanisms and those reels that you tighten the front drag after a run.

     

    I'm worried about missing a take, during the time it takes to tighten the front drag to a suitable tension. Obviously the baitrunners just require a turn of the handle.

     

    I'm looking at the Daiwa Emcast Evo 5500 Reels. I want to spend about £150 for 2 reels.

     

    Any thoughts?
