  1. I can't compare to anything else as it's the only rod of this type that I've ever had, but my Grauvell Specialist MT is lovely. It's a two piece, with two different types of tip end - one that makes it an avon type rod, the other taking a quiver tip, of which you get three different strengths. 11 3/4 feet, 1lb 8oz test curve. Lovely long, cork handle.

When I bought it I was told it was virtually identical to a number of better known makes of rod, but much cheaper - it cost me about £60. Would be interesting to know if anyone else has any experience of this rod. I think it's great!

  2. I'd say around 4 and a half, but I'm always a bit conservative with my estimates.

    As the rough average, I think I'll take 4 and a half - that's what I'll tell my mates anyway :D .

It seemed so big - hard to believe they can get even bigger! As you say John, it's much more about catching it and the memories - I was shaking as I brought it into the net. How sad is that?

    Thanks for your guesses.

  3. Hi folks. I was lucky enough to get out on the river today, and caught a really good chub. Problem is my rather old and knackered scales only go up to 4lb, and as they maxed out on this fish, and my previous best chub was only 3lb 12oz, I know this must be a PB.

Any help guessing the weight? I know it's really difficult to tell from pictures, and the only one that shows any proper kind of scale is blurred, but any ideas would be appreciated.

I've measured the net since, and it's 50cm / 19.5 " across at its widest point.

BTW, I am going to buy some new scales, and a larger net.

  4. I don't think this is going to help you much chesters. Have you tried installing something like Thunderbird? This will try to import all your old email files for you. I hate to say it but this is the kind of thing that happens when one insists on using obsolete software.

This link might help you out a bit.

    http://ed.mullen.home.comcast.net/Mozilla/moz_archive.html

Sorry, you're right. After re-reading Chester's original message, I don't think a text merge program was what you're after at all! Apologies if you ended up wasting any time on that one Chesters.

  5. I've used PayPal and NetBanx, and both have been fine.

With Netbanx I had to create an html template page and send it to them, while with PayPal I stuck with the really simple "Buy Now" button stuff (bit too simple for your situation though). Netbanx were really good and helpful, but PayPal was a bit of a pain. Difficult to find info on their site, and I was pleased I wasn't trying to do anything more complicated!

Never seen an API used though. Having never wanted to handle the legal and security issues associated with storing and/or handling card details, I've always let the Netbanx / PayPal lot deal with all of that. Simply POST any required info (e.g. name, postcode or anything else you may have got from your user) to a secure URL, and they'll redirect the user to an appropriate page on your own server (or wherever you want) once they've taken the details and processed the transaction.

Heard good things about worldpay too, but never used them.

  6. Wanzelbin,

Hope you're well. How's the river looking? Hoping to make a trip tomorrow!

Few more posts and I can PM you instead.

    Thanks,

    Stu

    Hi Stu.

Not sure what conditions you need for pike, but at about 3pm this afternoon around the Tonbridge flood barrier and sports ground it was high with quite a strong flow and muddy, though appears to have dropped a tiny a bit.

    Hope that helps!

  7. This isn't racism at all. This isn't a case of people motivated by a belief that their race and colour is better than another's.

It's just ignorant freaks lashing out at somebody due to envy, and commenting on anything they can to support their feeble position. As others have said, it's straight from the playground, and I'm sure that if Shilpa wore glasses, someone would have called her "four eyes" by now.

The problem is that others are labelling this behaviour as racism. Tony Blair jumping up and down saying "we should oppose racism in all its forms" is correct, but has absolutely nothing to do with a bunch of mentally disadvantaged people groping for words to attack someone with. It leads directly to the idea that it's ok to insult others in some ways but not others. As Shilpa herself said, her attackers need to learn some manners. This isn't racism, it's simply a lack of respect.

    Good posts from Sportsman.

  8. It's extremely unlikely to have anything to do with having IE7 installed, and you don't need to do any more speed tests cos you already know it's slow!

Most of the ISP support teams are the same - they have their standard list of questions and supported software, and will refuse to provide anything beyond that.

I always now tell them I've replaced any router / modem, swapped out cables / microfilters, reverted to standard software etc. every time whether I have or not, as you stand a much better chance of getting an answer and the ultimate goal - a line test!

Most of the time they can't do any more than a line test anyway, but this approach certainly saves you countless hours sitting on hold, only waiting for them to come up with another excuse not to look into things for you.

Personally I wouldn't do a thing except phone them back and say you've gone back to IE6 (and anything else they want) and it's still slow.

Sadly it's probably down to the contention ratio on your local exchange, which is the effect of multiple local users using the service at the same time, and there's nothing you can do about it.

  9. Sounds promising - cheers!

The spots I can fish and would like to keep an eye on are the Medway at Wateringbury and the Beult at Hunton and Staplehurst.

I would primarily be piking, but might be tempted to try for chub - a fish I've never really targetted before - my personal best stands approx. 10oz!

    Thanks,

    Stu

Well I've just got back, and it's looking better than I thought it was going to.

About a foot down from last weekend and not as muddy. A few dry days in a row would be nice!

Don't often get as far downstream as Wateringbury, but I shouldn't think it'd be too different from around Tonbridge. Feel free to ask about the river whenever you're planning a trip.

  10. I think I need to find someone who lives in the area and doesn't mind giving the odd river condition update when emailed!

I can do that! Just about to go for a walk on the Fordcombe stretch of the medway. Will let you know. Where about are you planning on going? Once you've done 15 posts, I can IM you on this site.

For the past two weeks between Fordcombe and Tonbridge it's been high and muddy, with quite a strong flow. Not many people fishing, though I sneaked a nice 4lb chub last Sunday morning!

  11. got a netgear in the office with 4 access points for wired computers, problem is 4 computers are wired and mines is wireless, now we have a field laptop which needs to access files on my computer. i use a cross over cable from the laptop to my pc. i can then setup a small home/office network with windows and i would then share my internet connection aswel but none of its working. ive been farting about with it all night and managed to see the laptop on my pc but no sub directories that i had set as shared. also internet connection sharing does not work.

i need help asap as i would like to get out of this damn office tonight.

p.s i can see the shared folders on their own computers through map network drive and the laptop is now getting limited or no connectivity.

    Regards

    Andy

Probably too late to help by the sound of it, but I vaguely remember doing something like this a long time ago.

First of all, have you set a static IP address on the field laptop? Unless you're running a DHCP server on your own laptop, the field laptop's not going to be able to get an IP address.

For that matter, you'd need to give your own laptop's LAN NIC an IP address as well.

Think you may also need to set up a user account on the field laptop with same username and password to an account on your own laptop. May also have to ensure both computers belong to the same workgroup or domain.

This may be a load of rubbish, but as I say, it was a long time ago and I've only just got up!

  12. Thanks Vagabond.

I got most of my current ideas from a tutorial on fishingmagic.com (http://www.fishingmagic.com/news/article/mps/UAN/2015/V/4/SP/364428288346202398340). I was attempting trotting as explained on there - i.e. letting the float run down with the slow current, helping line off my spool as it went. The sinking line was certainly a problem here, so I'll definitely sort that out.

Shotting pattern was 1 AAA above the float, 1 immediately below it with a BB and a no.4 as well. Half way down another no.4, and then a 6, 8 or nothing about 10" from the hook, depending on the weight of the worm.

  13. Thanks Lid.

On the line weight, the hook length's heavier than I would have liked simply because I didn't have anything lighter and all the shops were shut! Would have preferred to use about 2lb. As for the main line, I use 6 lb for just about everything - is it worth using something lighter? I was hoping for perch yesterday.

Though I have stick floats, I used a waggler yesterday because it was much heavier and I could cast further as I was trying to run it along the far bank. When you say a waggler is typically fished overdepth etc, does this suggest the stick float is not?

If you can recommend anything for reading up on float fishing on rivers, I'd be really grateful. Got a book token from my Nan for Christmas!

  14. I've never done much float fishing in rivers, but am determined to get the hang of it this new year.

Popped out for a few hours yesterday afternoon, but had a few experiences that seemed odd, and I wondered whether the fine folk on this forum might be able to help me with a few pointers.

I had plumbed various parts of the swim, and fished a small lobworm to the plumbed depth. As the float moved along, it would frequently get slowly dragged under - I guess the worm was getting caught on the bottom. It was virtually unfishable - so I shortened the depth by 6 inches, which removed the "dragging" problem, but I didn't get any bites. This may have been due to the conditions, but it got me thinking: Is it acceptable to fish to a depth less than the water - will fish take a worm dangling in mid-water, particularly in a slow flowing river?

Other thing was, I regularly saw the float "waggling" from side to side, particularly as it got away from me further downstream. Is this why it's called a waggler? My reel line wasn't tight to it, though it had sunk in the intervening water - is this not good?

Conditions were slightly windy, slow flow, and increasing colour from bad to very bad. I fished with my 12' avon-style rod, fixed spool reel, and a 3AA waggler with insert. 6lb main line, 4 lb hook length, sz 12 hook.

    Thanks for any help.

  15. Well, I got this book from Santa as I expect others did, and I read it and enjoyed it. But there was one incident that left me wondering if there was more in the green tea than CY admits. On p172 he catches a fish which he can't land in the dark, and leaves it hooked in the water. He then walks back to his lodgings paying out line all the time, going through busy streets (and presumably crossing roads?) leaving a long line behind him all night. Then in the morning he follows the line and ends up miles from where he first hooked the fish. So presumably the line was miles long? On p174 he finds it in a reed bed and takes off his shoes and socks to go in after it, suspecting it may be a sea trout - and then he skips to something else and never tells us what happens!

Have I misunderstood something? Or has CY got a rich imagination? Or what?

Ok. I've just read it myself. It's a dream! After the rain wakes him up on page 172, he "drifted away and was immediately fishing again". After the dream sequence, he commences the following paragraph with the words "Even when I'm sleeping I'm still fishing". The sequence itself, as you say, involves line that is miles long and many onlookers. Definitely a dream.

  16. Sorry if this has already been discussed, but does anyone know if that Fishing School program with Nick Hancock is going to be broadcast only in scotland, or will the rest of us get to see it as well?

    David

  17. I was just thinking that. Lokks nice and simple. I think I will leave it.

Thanks again - just off for a couple of hours fishing.

    Cheers - Glenn

I agree it looks better as it is, but just to let you know how to limit it to the text, put the text within a <span> tag, and apply the background-image style to the span. I realise this won't apply to all h1 tags, but you could pop the styling into a class that is referenced by the span.

    e.g.

    <style>

    .bgpic

    {

    background-image: url(http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/images/angnettop.gif)

    }

    </style>

  18. It's the same in East Kent. The nearest weather station to Wingham has reached just 28mm for the month - about half the average. We too badly need some rain otherwise we'll have even more of a drought problem next summer than we did this year.

This site gives you the stats for Wye near Ashford: http://www.meto.gov.uk/climate/uk/averages.../sites/wye.html

This site gives links to independent weather stations, many of which are likely to have historical records: http://www.weatherstations.co.uk/aws_map.htm

Finally, a search of this huge site should throw up lots of relevant data: http://www.wunderground.com

The weatherstations.co.uk map site's excellent. I've now got http://www.westkentweather.co.uk/, which has loads of info for Southborough, right next to Tunbridge Wells. Interestingly, current rainfall for Nov over this side of the county is 41.4mm.

    Thanks very much Steve.
