  2. Is it me, or do you see a lot less loose tackle washed up on river banks these days than you used to? I mean, when I was a nipper (jeesh - 35 years ago) we always used to find floats and lures when we went fishing. As I walk the dog now along the Trent I can't help looking out for a few freebies but never see any. I can't help wandering why.

I know what you mean about the tackle you could pick up.

I think these days, there is more help out there, even for the young anglers. in my day, it was ask the guy next to you, and hoped as a kid he would give you the advice.

not all of them did as you were a kid and they really didnt want you there.

but today, with all the internet and forums and the great advice, the more experienced angler these days are prepared to give has gone a long way to helping the young anglers.

most children now get home and go straight on the net, to look things up, or even get advice. on the net, they are adults, and get adult info.

i say lets keep it going and make better fisherman of them. whish i had this when i first started.

  3. A buzzbar is the horizontal bar at either end of the rod pod to which you attach your rod rests, alarms and bobins. So there is one or two threads on the bottom side to attach to your rod pod, and two or three on the top side for the alarms etc.

Just my opinion by the way but I prefer "goalpost" rod pods as i think thet are more stable. Remember to avoind to high rod opds as the can be pulled or blow over all to easily.

    Rich

    thanks for that.

  5. Hi,

Im fairly new here, some lively topics going on. Im like a lot i guess fished a lot in my younger days, sold tackle, got back into it, rebought tackle ( at great expense lol ) go as often as family, house/car repairs allow. I like to fish for all species just enjoy the whole day out. Having a couple of days out this october with a guide to learn more about pike fishing, want to give it a go and want to do it right, have caught pike and handled them ok but still not too sure so decided to learn the basics better. I can read a book but find someone showing to be a better way, learn more that way.

Look forward to contributing to the forum and picking up some good tips

    All the best

    Bob

welcome to the forum bob. im fairly new to the forum, and like you fished a few years ago, and had 5 years break and got back into it.

i think your in the best forum around for good sensible advice, i think through the other members here, i have learned more in a few weeks, than when i spent twenty years fishing before.

there are alot of very good anglers here who are happy to share there advice and views and help others.

hope you have a great time here, and fun, and you will learn alot along the way,

    tights lines to all

  6. Thanks for all the info on the nuts, will give them a try, now i know what im looking for. got couple of things im going to try tomorrow, fresh prawns, mussels, and the bread items metioned earlier.

i fish a canal in the morning, i know there is carp there, but whether they are around where i will be fishing.

so will fish the pole for my silvers and put a carp rod rod with the above mentioned.

have spent last few days baiting, fished for a couple hours this morning and had some nice roach on corn.

will let you all know how i get on tomorrow night.

    thanks smac

  7. Sea deadbaits rarely catch perch but are excellent for many other species, including those not considered predatory. My most successful by far has been whitebait, on which I've caught a lot of different species. In fact carp have been a flaming nuisance on whitebait when I've been after, ahem, better fish. <_<

had not though about that one, i have that to hand as well. as for the not catching perch, that i dont mind to much, i would like to get away from them from time to time. but dont get me wrong i still love to catch them, but sometimes they seem to get in the way

    regards

  8. Or the Sudbury in Suffolk? If the latter then you are spoilt for choice!

hope its the suffolk one for him lol. the one i was thinking really only has the grand union canal. dont get me wrong, some good fishing to be had there.

fishing it in the morning for a couple hours before work, some nice bream to be had. lots of roach and perch. had over 50 fish last monday.

  9. over the last few weeks of being a new member of this great forum, with some great advice given by many.

i have heard about many different baits used. rather than put on endless posts regarding different baits, i t

thought i would make a short list of them, and hopefully all of you who have used them can give advice on each of them through your use and experience. and which ones to use, whether raw or cooked. and what fish they are maybe best for.

    mussels

    prawns

    dog biscuit

    buzzers (whatever that is)

    sardines

    mackerel

    small squid

    pastes (what is this)

any other fished based products would also be a help, as in my job, i have many fish products to hand and in large quantities. mussels, prawns, mackerel, sardines. and would love to know how to use them and for what fish.

    regards

    smac

  10. Goundbaiting with Swans & Ducks is not new.

Feed the fowl and once they have got out of the way ( to avoid hooking one ) fish a pinch of bread flake on a slow sinking float rig. Self-cocking floats are ideal.

The bait sinks gently and makes a tempting target for any fish. The rate at which it sinks will depend on how tightly you pinch the flake on the hook. . . . a case of trial & error.

Dependant on the species present ( prob Roach ) and locality of snags I would recomend using 2lb line and a size 16 or 18. If it's Chub etc step up to 3 or 4lb line with a size 12.

    Good luck

I to am fishing a canal in the morning, have never really used bread, but do want to try as well. the pinched bread and bread punch side of it i know. the part that interested me was the self cocking float, what is this and what does it look like. and is it any good on canals, with a fast surface skim.

    many thanks.

  11. I am going to count myself as a novice to the fishing laws....there has been another good thread regarding fish taking.

i would like to clarify what the law is on an ordinary EA rod license.

as regards the catching and taking of fish from UK waters.

as i have seen one guy fish and take a bream from my local canal, but he bolted before i could ask what he was doing. that was two weeks ago.

last week the same guy was fishing, with 2 rods, no landing net. he caught nothing that day.

i know he is bound to be there for the third week running and have my video cam ready.

i ask for your advice on the law, and best coarse of actiom.

    many thanks.. s_mac

  12. There was an article in my local paper a couple of weeks ago reporting the problems with carp theft at a local lake and the local council were saying that they'd just spent thousands on stocking only to watch migrants steeling the fish.

To be honest though mate, there's no point in discussing it because you'll only get branded a racist by those fortunate enough to have so far avoided the problem. Lets just hope that it's just going to be a short term cultural adjustment.

All I will say is that if you see anyone taking fish or find anything that looks like a setline on your local waters, contact the EA hotline for illegal fishing, polution incidents etc on 0800 80 70 60 and report it.

just a curiosity, should i be on the bank and see angler taking fish and call this number. what would happen, how long would it take for action.

what would be the coarse of events.

  13. they are probably still waiting for the police to come out

i was speaking to an angler today ,he had a burglery at his house and called the police ,2 days later he phoned up and was offered a crime number for his insurance no mention of anyone attending.thats all i could write here as the other sentences were too rude to mention.

i found a pile of dumped hemp plants at the back of the pond (3rd lot this year) in amoungst the plants was a tissue with blood on it ,as it was only dumped the night before the tissue was still dry and fresh.i phoned up the bill ,told them exactly where it was ,did they collect this evidence of the dumpers dna ,did they buggery ,the plants and tissue have long rotted away

i found a safe that had obviasly been stolen then cut open ,i told them where it was and they asked if i could fetch it in :o ,the local copper phoned up 3 days later as he couldnt find it (despite it being exactly where i said) he said it wasent stolen but lost :o another crime report not to fill in :wallbash:

the govs crime statistics go down because the "crime" isnt logged as one ,you dont have something stolen you "lose" it  .

if you fire a gun and you dont hot anyone your "losing" a bullit ,and if you brandish it your checking you havent lost it

Thats all the police do these days is give out crime numbers.

i worked in a petrol station for two and a half years, we had a around four drive offs a week, ( people filling without paying) you would phone 999 as it was then, they would ask make and model of car, which direction it went off in. a day later they would come out and ask for statement and give crime number.

why ask which way they went when its going to be 24 hours before you start the chase lol

  14. two guys in a bar, one guy says i must get my daughter married, then his mate replies, you have no chance. god shes ugly

the girls father says yeah, but she will do anyhting you ask. he says look i will give you a million pounds to marry her, his mate says no way, shes to ugly. ok then i will give you five million and she will do what ever you ask.

his mate says ok, and they get married.

he sits there there licks his lips "she says beer and brings him a beer"

he rubs his tummy "she says dinner and brings him his dinner"

the father calls round to see how there doing. his mate says shes great. while holding a picture on the wall, she says hammer, he says to the father look, what ever i need she does and gets.

she brings the hammer and he says look how good she is. he puts the nail in the wall for the picture, hits it with the hammer but misses and hits his thumb

OUCH F**K!!! SHE SAYS PAPER BAG

  15. funniest thing happened to me a few weeks ago.

went to fish a venue for the first time. as i got there, the baliff pounced on me, saying im the baliff, he was feeder fishing on a peg. he said to me i would save your money, the fish have gone off, it does not matter how good a fisherman you are you wont catch here today now.

i paid my money, set up my waggler. and got into roach and perch straight away. i had about 10 to his nothing, at which point he decided to change pegs away from me in the trees.

i carried on catching and had around 40 perch and roach.

then i heard all hell break loose as he towed in a duck, and heard him shout f****ing ducks.

it made my day, lol. but i later became friends with him as i visited the venue more

  16. Im not a sea fisherman, and have read some post about licenses, and conservation and the likes. i love my coarse fishing, and would pay what ever the license was to fish, and catch fish from my local lakes and canals. as i think would be the same for every fresh water fisherman.

firstly, we are all asked to do our little bit to conserve in all things, from water to electric, use less power, lower power cars, use bikes or public transport. we are told that every little bit helps.

secondly, we as fresh water fisherman, observe strict codes, to protect and conserve. and pay to help inforce this.

i was from the north east, where sea fishing is a big thing. i went many times to watch my father in law fish his competitions on the weekends. there are many sea angling clubs fishing such things every week around the country.

i ask could the sea fishing clubs do more. it maybe not a case of trying to employ baliffs to look after the coast line. but make the coast line pay for itself.

most fresh water venues are looked after by fishing clubs, councils and so forth. with the clubs own baliffs looking after there own bit very well. what the baliff says we do. or the rules a club imposes. barbless hooks, no keepnets and many others that we abide by very well. and taking money through membership fees, which all help to conserve, protect.

cant sea angling be done the same, many towns, have clubs that fish a certain coastline. so a increase in there membership fee or even a local license to pay someone with some spare time to go out and collect day tickets.

i agree, that a restock programme is impossible. and charter boats cant be helped. but maybe bag limits can be, like the mackerel season. and the competitions, where fish are caught, and taken to the weigh in dead, when maybe for the duration of the compitions, people can check and record weights and fish returned.

take home the fish you want to eat from the pleasure fishing side. and limit this.

  17. Hiya

I used to fish years ago with my dad oop north in North Yorkshire, and have recently got back into the delights of fishing

I'm now living down in South West London near Hampton / Sunbury and wondered if you guys/gals had any tips on where to fish ( lakes or parts of the thames )

I don't have much equipment at the moment ( dad's casts offs ! ) but have an 12.5m pole that I love and a 13ft Carp rod.

I love fishing for Perch/Roach etc on the rivers and Carp in the lakes/ponds. I like to have a go a catching barbel, but guess I should get back into the swing of this first

Any suggestions on where to go and what baits / rigs to use ?

hi, im fairly new to the london area. i fish around ealing area and greenford regulary for the types of fish you mentioned. where is that from you.

  18. what do you mean for the gp's?

most can get an appointment same day or next day...would be better if patients cancelled if they dont need appointment.

our problem is beacause of high number of patients who have English as a second language interprepers are used or recepion staff(which means less people answering phone or on desk) as half of ours speak either Urdu/Punjabi or Arabic..working through an interpreter lakes longer. Also many have complex health problems that dont fit into a five min appointment or even a ten min double one,so often surgeries over run....then we often need to get in to see a gp so will nip in between patients which can add to waiting time.

i totaly agree, with all you have said. i know your over worked, under paid, over stressed. and do the hardest job in the world.

i am in retail, if someone does not like what i have they go next door. for you its diff. i guess they say i demand and its there right, or words to that affect. and everyhting is an emegency. they have to been seen NOW.

i have full admiration and support all you do. you are finest people in the world.

i was thinking from a government point of view

    s_mac

  19. just noticed this thread ...as i'm in the surgery just nipped and looked at the notice board last week 86 appointments missed our other surgery up the road 112.... lots of surgeries have policies of 3 strikes and you are out.

    hi nursejudy.

can i just ask what your average waiting time is where you are.

  20. hospital appointments missed, is a crime and should be stampeed out or charged for.

doctors appointments, then thats a diff matter. if we can get the waiting time down to see your local gp, then there would be less missed appoinments. the time it takes to see them, to be honest, your body has managed to heal itself by then.
