  1. This website is RAMMED with QUALITY information (if you can be bothered to look for it).........the people wrote these articles precisely so you could learn from THEIR mistakes and go and enjoy your fishing having the right knowledge to hand.

Peter, you are right, you wouldnt think of sitting astride a pike and chinning its mouth open BUT the info is all here and was painstakingly put down so newcomers could learn and then fish with confidence. Same with the removal of a lure from the outside of the gillcovers rather than through the mouth............its all here! Nobody showed me how to do it, I just did some diligent reading first.

Sure, being shown is great if someone has the time to spare but really its not ESSENTIAL.

Phil, i have found someone to show me, not to far away from me. i have a car, and can buy a book to show me what to do. but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, best left to them who knows and have been trained or have the experience.

we can all put a plug on a kettle, but could we all put a new socket on the wall for that plug to fit from the kettle.

a book can tell me what tools i need for a job, which i have just about got what i need, but it cant tell me the practical stuff.. where the hook might be. how to really get it out safely, for the fish and myself.

if 10 people say go with someone who knows, and one says dont bother, i know the advice i will go by.

    regards

is there a certain type or brand.

how do you present the bait

    what hook size and method

any info would be great, want to try it out on local canal just to get the hang of it before i go and fish the venue

    many many thanks

  3. I think it is totally admirable that someone should have followed all the advice given on various websites and has asked for tuition before setting off alone. If only more people had the same responsible attitude.

thanks peter for that. i have talked to alot of people about the right gear and equipment, and the main advice was get a year or two under your belt with someone who knows what they are doing.

    so im doing just that.

  4. What sort of quality you after s_mac?? And how much do you want to spend?? Can do the rods, reels, mat, net, pod, scales, weigh net and alarms for around the £125 mark. Bivvie as required!! BUT suggest you have a long look on eBay!! Some BARGAINS on there!! But can certainly do a bivvy and have obtained several but price is by negotiation.

your within my price range, give me a total with a bivvy. have looked at ebay, so got the price side in my head. as you say, bidded on one on ebay, without bivvy, but stopped at where price went higher that what it was worth.

are what your selling new, or second hand, just as a thought.

  5. Im looking for someone to teach me pike fishing, dont want to go it alone, as i dont have a clue and i know you need a year or two experience before going it alone.

if some one cn teach me in the middlesex area, i would be grateful and i would in turn for the knowledge supply 20kg mackerel, 20kg sardines and other sea baits that would be used.

you can leave a post or PM or Email me.

then we can get chat about gear needed, i have aquired what i think are the basics, but you can help me with the rest,

many thanks to all who take the time.

    regards

  6. DEN tsk tsk its your age i bet !

my biggest bane is anglers leaving their permits in the car ,why dont they keep it in their box

mines in my wallet, it stays there till i get a new one, i take my gear every morning to work, and and home again, just incase i decide to fish on the way.

treat your license like your bank card, thats what i say.

  7. A) How long have you been fishing after the age of 12?

Went regularly up until the the age of around 25 but have got back into it in the past 4 years

    B) How many days a year do you fish?

Not as many as i would like due to family/work/diy etc you know the score

    C) How many times have you had your Rod Licence checked (by official WA/NRA/EA baillif as opposed to club baillif or fishery owner)?

once last year. prior to that only once in all my fishing trips. bailiffs are a rare breed it seems

    20 years fishing

fish around 10 imes a week, couple hours before and after work and weekends

checked in my first year,20 years ago, never since, not even by a baliff of the water i was fishing, they just took my money

But could the checks be over looked by the gear we have and carry. one water i fished this year for my first time, i had all my gear, he never checked. then another guy came behind me with just a rod and landing net and small holdall. he was asked.

it may have been random, or the gear i had. like the police i guess, you have a 20 year old banger, they are more inclined to stop that than a more newer model.

before you all start lol, i know they stop everyone, just trying to get a point across lol

    regards.

  9. The one that always makes me laugh, and can be seen a heck of a lot on the back of lorries......

If You cant see my mirror's, I cant see you

i saw one on the back of a van, like the above, it was a security vehical with a picture of a german shepherd dog on it, underneath the dog, it said if you can read this i will charge you stud fees lol.

  10. I think it matters when the rod is likely to be held all or most the time. A point of balance at the reel would be advantageous on a fly or lure setup for instance. Compensating for poor balance would be hard work on the wrist and arm, in a very short space of time. I don't think it matters quite so much, when the rod is going to be cast and left in a rest.

i think you hit the nail on the head andy, for the last half hour i put a lure on my carp rod, and after a while my arm was breaking, it was obviously designed as you say to sit on a rest all day.

thanks mate, thought i was getting old lol.

  11. My better half and I will celebrate (*1) 21 years of wedded bliss (*1) on Thursday 7th.

Many chums have remarked: - you dont look old enough (I was 22, she 20), - that's your 3rd life sentance, hmmm 3x7 = one bloody great big itch! etc.

I've booked a table at a fine resturant on the beach in Bournemouth (feels just like the med) (*2) - so that should earn me a few brownie points,,,,

So folks, what's your score? first? twice / thrice, 50 golden years and still going strong?

And how do you celebrate? any 'interesting' aniversary japes to tell?

(*1- if thats the right word?!)

(*2- hope she don't mind me chucking half a mackerel out, the Bass might be in)

hi, think i know the place your going, lived in bournemouth for a couple of years, just want to say great choice of place.

all the very best and hope many more years of getting out to fish lol.

cleaned them up. but just coming to the end of the fly stage, just the odd one suddely appears on the windscreen while driving along lol. had to leave sun roof open while car was park so they could find a way out.

  14. This is what I posted in answer to a previous question on this subject:

"In England and Wales it is illegal to take any fish from any stillwater not connected to a river without the express permission of the owner of the fishing rights. To do so is a criminal offence under the Theft Act. Indeed, even fishing such a stillwater without permission of the owner is considered theft as you'd be "stealing" his fishing rights.

River and canal fish are considered wild creatures and therefore don't belong to anyone. Thus they can't strictly speaking be stolen. Having said that you can still steal the owner's fishing rights and therefore be prosecuted under the Theft Act if you fish such waters without permission, whether you take any fish or not. However these laws don't apply to tidal rivers or the extremely few waters that are designated public fisheries. So on non-tidal rivers and canals, or on stillwaters connected to a river, it's still illegal to take any fish from any water without the express permission of the owner of the fishing rights, unless the venue is designated a public fishery.

Additionally, both the owner of the fishing rights and/or the Environment Agency may impose size or bag limits. As far as I'm aware there are no such national EA limits. However there are local limits, especially for game fish. In each case it is a criminal offence to break any of these regulations, and in the case of breaking the owner's rules it's again treated as theft.

One final point. Whether or not there's a sign saying the fishery is private is irrelevant. With the very rare exception all non-tidal waters in England and Wales are private.

For further details see the excellent book "Angler's Law in England and Wales" by R.I.Millichamp."

that reply was made to a topic i asked a couple of weeks ago steve. when i saw a gentleman take a large bream from the local canal that i fish, he bolted when i went to ask what he was up to.

the same gentleman was there the following week, but blanked from what i could tell.

anyway, i think most of us dont really know the laws, and i doubt whether the police would really know the law.

there are so many laws for the police to contend with, that these days they shrug things off and get back to doing the the things that bring down statistics in the media.

i know this first hand and see it every day. where the police are called daily outside where i work for a certain company, but all they ever say is we dont really fully know the law, its a civil matter.

the best coarse as someone metioned is through your local MP, they are there to work for us and if all of us go to our own MP in our own areas, we will start to get a lot of voice.

Fishing is the most popular sport per people taking part, elections wont be to far away, we all need to start writing now.

as for the sending back licenses, first we make ourselves as bad as those we want to catch, and secondly, we take away the resources that are limited anyway to the EA. so i think its best we all keep our licenses and start writing as licenses holders to all MPs.

  15. some one said, the more you handle fish the better. this i tottaly agree with. 2 years ago i became a fish monger. at first it was hard, hands were so sore from spines and the likes i had to ask my wife to open a packet of crisps for me lol.

now i handle an clean fish,it might as well be a tim of beans. i also manage the shop now and love every minute of it.

oh yes and if anyone wants any pike bait, sardines mackerel cheap. PM me.

  16. hope they dont ban hemp where i fish. just got in from a couple hours fishing,

i put out a bed of hemp, fed sweetcorn and fished maggots for the first half hour, then changed to sweetcorn as hook bait and had over twenty roach, over the half pound mark.

the same tacktics work yesterday for me so thought i would give it a go today to see if it was a fluke.

seems to get past the little perch and small roach. and i fished the lift method on the pole.

    regards
