  1. I've got lobs in the fridge so I'll be exploring a hitherto unfished stretch of the K&A canal after perch.......in conditions which scream 'don't bother fishing for perch'. Google Earth calculates a mile each way so it'll be a nice walk and I'll get some pics of something although probably not fish :)

Anyone else planning a lost cause?

Out trotting on the river tees in the morning, looking forward to it as always, despite the biterness

  2. just to emphasise again how important it is to fish close in I caught two fish today no further than about 8ft from the bank, both cracking fish, one at 12lb 10oz and another at 19lb 6oz. No need to cast out as you could spit further than that if you wanted to but theres some very good fish to be had very close in

The river will fish even better for pike tomorrow I'm sure ,as the colour in it is dropping out fast , very fast and river levels returning to normal

Some cracking fish Brian, i'm on the Tees for a dawn start with my pike rod at the ready. I had a feeling this weekend sounded good...

  3. The river will fish its socks off this weekend after the run off of extra water

The biggest nistake I see pikers make when they fish the Tees or indeed most rivers is to welly the bait into the middle when the most productive bits are from the bankside and no more than a rod a half lengths out, mind you there is one spot on the Tees that's the total opposite and most of the pike are in the middle where the silverfish feed is but generally, concentrate on the margins and in particular the marginal shelf and fish just outside of that as pike use it for cover to ambush their prey and if you get it right (you need to plumb the depth to find the drop off) you'll catch well

Couldn't agree more Brian, i've had most of my pike from within 2 rod lengths out from the Tees. Also, the majority of them come within 20 minutes or so. The river looks good, i was out wednesday and there was a good flow pushing through. Should be sock on this weekend - i'll be out!

  4. Hi all,

About 2 years i decided to take up fishing again after a long break (15yrs). Now after refreshing my skills at places such as The Oaks and Woodlands, i have decided its time to take the plunge and give the River Swale a bash. The last time i fished the swale was on what was The Black Bull stretch at Topcliffe, but i beleive the this is now syndicate owned.

What i would like to know is, where can i fish day ticket on the Swale and possibly into the evening and what bait/gear and tactics.....basically any and all advice would be appreciated as im taking a couple of guys with me that have never caught a Barbel and although i cannot guarantee fish it would be nice for them to catch their first.

From what ive read i think my gear will suffice, Korum 3G 2lb t/c Barbell rod, Abu 502 Freerunner with 10lb mainline and 12lb sinking braid to size 8. The bait i was gonna try was The Source boilies, and a pidgeon seed and 4mm pellet/groundbait mix flavoured with The Souce glug.........does this sound about right?

    Thanks in advance guys.

Cundall Lodge stretch would be a good place to start. Pay at the farm (inside the grounds there is an honesty box from memory) and drive down the farm track to the river, parking near oxbow lake.

  5. Summer piking can be great.

Most of the above advice is exacltly what i would have said...what i recall from first pike fishing is the beginners ordeal of handling and unhooking pike, and this is key. Make sure you read up on it (there is plenty of info out there) and, better still, fish with someone in the know initially. After a little bit of practice, it's no problem at all.

  6. If you want my opinion, the level wind mechanism just gets in the way. With a little practice, self-levelling the line with your thumb as you wind becomes second nature, and it only improves casting distance. As above posts suggests, a little more info is required as for tpe of ground etc before choosing a reel. The Penn 525 or Daiwa Sl30sh are very reliable reels for rough ground, they are both solid as a rock and have an excellent solid wind. For beach fishing, i would buy an Abu Ambassadeur 6000 size, but personally would go for an older one (you can get them in very good condition from ebay); they seem better than their modern counterparts!

  7. I've bought quite a few items from this place for camping etc, but I never knew they had a fishing section !

Got an email this evening saying that they've got a 70% off sale on so I might have a look and see what the stuff is like.

    Go Outdoors

As much as i prefer to use local tackle shops, they had a good sale on after xmas and i bought a middy 30 plus avon quiver for £50, reduced from over £100. You do get some decent offers, but there's a fair amount of rubbish as well! I always keep an eye out.
  8. Not enough people have the self restraint to use the art of stealth and subsequently don't fish the margins because they've never caught there.

Hope it didn't totally ruin your day. Unfortunately I believe this type of fishing eg sprint stalking and total disregard are here to stay for as long as the perpetrators decide to fish.

I've managed to avoid this kind of disturbance by fishing out of the way rivers which people are ignoring a lot nowadays because commercial pools are easier! - i think i'm going to struggle on the lakes in the next few months Might get back to the see on some out of the way bass location !

  9. Ask ten people and you will get ten differant answers, its a personal thing with line, people tend to stick to what they know and trust.

i use preston direct mono for all my coarse fishing. great stuff.

Drennan double strength (if you can find the 100m spools).

  10. I have a problem with heavily stocked commercial ponds - those that contain a ridiculous amount of easy to catch fish. Thats why i try rivers / sea where possible. There is something about fishing that dictates to me that a place needs to be wild. I dont know why, but i prefer to trundle through a mile of heavily overgrown river bank and pulling out a fish that is there by nature, and not because someone stocked it!!

On the carp front, ys we do play around with scaling and providing all varieties / strains of big carp. An interesting point though is that, left to their own devices for a while, generations of spawning will eventually have carp reverting back to the full scaled variety. This is the dominant gene; common carp have a better survival rate. Those mirrors were only there because we wanted less scales to remove when we were cooking them! Dont get me wrong, i do get it. I have been a carp fisherman before, but now it needs to be a place which has some mystery behind it. A pond that was stocked long ago, and now is reputed to hold one or two biggies. This is the kind of place i would go for.

Mind you, sometimes it's just good to get a bend in your rod, and a heavily stocked carp fishery can be good fun!

  11. Hell Gang, Again :)

Just bought 2nr. sets of 3nr. quiver tips at an indoor 'car boot sale'. The tips, as you are probably aware, are manufactured in different colours; red, green etc. However, the one's I've just bought have no indication of the test curve, or whatever, printed on the 'fat end' of the quiver tip. <_<

Can anyone tell me if there is an 'industry standard' method of 'colour = test curve' relative to determining what tip does what 'test curve-wise'? <_<

I'll be grateful for any advise.

    Regards,

    H. :)

If only! You should get a feel for what they may be useful or Take them down to a river and give them a try....you'll soon know which works best for which situation

  12. How has everyone been doing when fishing recently?

I'm still struggling for bites here in the South west, no matter how or where i fish, so i am blaming it on the cold water temperatures!!

Keep seeing pictures of people with recently caught chub and hauls of roach and bream and was wondering if people had found fishing recently hard, normal or even quite easy?

    dave

Rivers definitely best, 9lb pike last weekend for me up here in the north east. Need to keep moving from swim to swim to both find the fish and stay warm!

  13. I've tried night fishing once or twice for Pike while sitting up for them but never had much luck and truth be told I found it rather boring. I think if I tried it again, I would change from dead baits to boilies or some other bait after a few hours of darkness and fish for an alternative species and then get up before first light to put the dead baits back on and start Piking again.

A few people have told me they have found night time productive for Pike, but to be honest for me it does not really appeal much. I think I associate Pike fishing with cold crisp mornings.

If i were to fish for pike at night (my sessions are usually dawn or dusk) i would only do it while awake. I know what i'm like, prone to ignoring alarms in the morning.

  14. Iv been hearing alot about people using vodka soaked or injected deadbaits and having some serious results in the way of big pike on the bank! I want to know if it works , y it works and does it not harm the pike??? Info plz

The misses would never believe me if i came home smelling of fishy vodka....

  15. Yeah think I'm gunna make up my own ground bait, sum bred flake corn and crushed gravy bones (dog biscuits), is wot I have used on lakes in past and seems to work very well. Theese are defiantly double figure carp so hopefully I will hook in to 1 and the fight will be tremendous :)

I remember reading about carp from the electricity cut at the Nene - original Leney strains. Might be monster or two about....

  16. No license checks means no detection of poaching - whether it's the odd fish for the pot or netting a large section of a lake or river. An odd choice at a time when the level of poaching has never been higher or a more volatile issue.

So exactly what do honest coarse anglers get for their money ?

    Oh, let me guess.......

    Properly maintained salmon rivers ?

Features ripped out of banks in the name of flood defenses ?

    Screwed ?

I had my licence checked once, who proceeded to get really shirty when i questioned why this was the first time i had ever been checked!
