  1. 'proper' predator fishing i.e with lures or fly is why I fish for pike as the tackle is light and the fishing can be very explosive/exciting

I've sort of come to the conclusion that pike fishing isn't as easy as people think, it takes lots of travelling and getting on the right waters, not so much technique.....things which I don't have the time or energy to bother with. I know I'm not doing anything wrong bit have such a poor winter I do wonder sometimes where all the pike have gone but I know I'll still go out and fish for pike on the rivers as it's something I love doing.

This spring/summer I'd like to make a move towards catching more pike on the fly as it's te most enjoyable method I've come across. Since there are very few big fish where I am you might as well make it fun catching the smaller ones!

  2. I use 30lb Fox Carboflex for all my pike fishing. TBH it was the only wire I have found that can withstand fly casting and last a few fish.

Never tried 49 strand and bet there are some really nice traces out there, just stuck to what I found has worked

  3. I'd be tempted to ask if you could borrow some kit from one of your mates to start with.

At the very least quiz them hard over what tackle they would buy as they should know the waters, methods etc.

    Tight lines

Good call, pike fishing does requires LOTS of specialized kit, not just rod & reel

God luck with it, hope you catch

  4. Im still leaning towards a longer rod, many of the places I fish on the Ouse can have some big nearside snags and reedbeds etc, leaning over these with a shorter rod can be a real nightmare.

I like the look of the Uglystik and also a Berkley that Ive found. To be honest though, unless there all hiding theres a limited range of longer triggergrip rods around.

Very tru, I had to search the net loads before I found something suitable

Did want a Savage Gear MP as they do really nice 9 & 10ft trigger grip rods but couldn't find one anywhere.

Agree with you on the manoueverablity of longer rods but nice having something longer you can bait fish with as well on rivers :)

  5. This one rears its head every so often, might be worth a google of AN on the subject. Me, I'm a great advocate of the shorter rod, 7' or 7'6" long. The greater wind resistance when casting a longer rod all day is, I think, a minus point, as is the reduced tip control when retrieving.

I do think that a crisp tip action is a plus, and for that reason I would stay clear of soft tipped rods like the Ugly Stix. Probably great rods in their day, although I never rated them, but long since superseded by advances in rod making. The Wychwood range of lure rods strike me as being darn good value.

Depends on what lures you want to use really, I think the Ugly stick is a versatile rod if you want to use a multi but don't like casting foot long jerkbaits.

I'm a big fan of wychwood stuff but as far as I know the only rod they do with a trigger grip is the 6ft jerkbait rod....all the rest are rung for fixed spools

Aplogies Andy for mentioning insulating tape after you had already....happens a lot on forums :)

  6. Good question about the braid, I've never managed to get a whole spool of the stuff on a reel despite the line capacities on the reel being more than what it says on the braig spool. Just end up with lots of spools with about 25/50m of braid left on which is annoying!

Usually when spooling up with braid I use a few wraps of insulating tape...seems to work

  7. River Avon here in Bath reached levels I haven't seen for 5/6 years yesterday...still high but dropping now. Still wouldn't face my chances at the weekend so am going to give it a miss, just don't have the time with Valentines day and my girlfriends birthday on the same day to get to a stillwater somehere....I'd be in the dog house for along time lol

    3. No Interest

Species that you don't really interest you as a sporting quarry.

Carp, Bream, Tench, Roach, Rudd Dace etc.

  9. Neil don't do it its more addictive than Crack Cocaine and you will end up selling all your lures to fund your new addiction :lol: ,It is great fun but you might end up going to one of those help groups,You know the ones where there is a room full of strangers and you have to stand up and say hi my name is Neil and i am a centrepin addict steve.

    lol

Nah...nothing can wean me off my lure addiction :)

I take it people are keeping an eye on water levels down south....snow is gone, now repalaced by probably 2/3 metres of extra water

  10. I always thought - after a couple of people I know pointed it out to me - that match anglers on the banks of a canal look like a bunch of garden gnomes minus the toastools. Mind you, an enterprising seatbox manufacturer could always...

    No, don't go there.

    lol

Pikers...easily spotted due to damaged/worn equipment and home-made tackle i,e floats etc

Basically we're a bunch of tightwads

  11. I don't know from personal experience but the last time I was there a group of pikers headed along the uppermost stretch immediately West from the car park (P on the map) http://www.riverkennet.co.uk/directions.html They said that was where the large 'youtube' pike came from and they were there all day.

At the end of that stretch is where I saw the roving lure piker.

I was told that the 'Youtube pike' came from the canalized section at the top near a broken tree, on watching the video again though I'm unsure it it was there...who knows for sure. I'd say the Old river was a good bet, that's where I had my fish from. That bit west from the car park is the big, shallow section upstream from the canalised bit...incidentally where Andy Little had the big 'un (low bridge clearly visible in the background of the photo!)

Got to get back to Barton, lovely river fishing!
