  1. I don't know what you did in Picasa Janet but if it was within the rules i would say you have a very good comp pic there.

    Cheers Fred

I agree with you there Fred.

    SW

  2. Get a screw that will fit in the tripod mount and get it welded to a length of chain. If Hazel screws it to the camera, and drops the other end on the floor, she can stand on it. Then pull up when taking the shot. End of camera shake. A low tech solution but I hope it helps.

    Cheers,

    OT

Seen that recommended before, thanks for the reminder 'OT'. First things first, Hospital Monday, test procedures, work out whats wrong and how to put it right? She might even be able to straighten up enough eventually? But its going to be a longish haul, as backs so often seem to be???

  3.

Well, it is! If I want to post a photo on this forum, I need to upload it from my camera to the PC, then to Photobucket, then open a message on here, copy and paste the link from Photobucket and then preview it to make sure I haven't stuffed it up somewhere along the line, as is frequently the case! Nine times out of ten I find that the picture I wanted to post is the one I've forgotten to upload to Photobucket so I have to go and kick seven bells out of the cat and start all over again!

On the Competition Forum I can just browse my own PC for the file...so much easier for a numpty like me! Apart from the problem with the Exif info not being there, it was remarkably painless....

Do you have to have the info for the competition?

    Janet

Janet, I have noticed one or two others are not showing Exif details . . . so I suspect its not strictly enforced? B)

Not being sarky to you by the way Janet, as you say, if you can do it with no help  there is no excuse for any AN Photo Forum member not to post at least one comp., picture as a show of solidarity . . .

  4. I've just had a tally up in my mind, I've got 5 cameras sitting around . . . 5 :o !!!! Three point and shoot compacts and two DSLR's . . . How, why??? . . . I can only use one camera at one time!!!

Although the Canon A640 will come in handy, Hazels back and curved spine is getting to be a problem. She uses the Nikon D40X, but is finding having to stand up straight as you do for a DSLR, a bit of an effort these days, and its a bit heavy (for here), picture taking is supposed to be fun ^_^ . . . So we will dust off the swivel screened Canon A640 and she can use it at waist level like a 'format box type camera' in live view . . . :clap2: Not ideal, first experiments give camera shake, but a little coordination??? My best thought to overcome the problem, until (if/when?) her back improves.

    Positive thoughts :P . . . SW

  5. Hellbelly: "I try to take my camera with me most places. If I'm going to a family event or going comping then its a given that the camera goes too. I often take it to work because you never know when you might want it and I've got a couple of projects that I want to do and never know when I might have the opportunity to start one."

    Mick.

Hay Mick, holstered ready to draw B) I've put it in the other post, but there is 8 days to go, what about one of those great 'scapes' you used to do when you first got that wide angle lens, enter it in the competition, keep the end up so to speak?

  6. Apart from a lot of faffing around tryiing to find out how to resize my picture after several failed attempts at uploading because it was too large, the rest of the process was surprisingly simple (and it needs to be simple for me!) Much easier than saving to Photobucket and then uploading onto the forum!

One slight problem though. The file information isn't there as it is on all the other pictures. Have I missed doing something? I cropped the photo slightly using Digimax Master (the software that came with the camera) and then "saved as".... I'll go and do a search on the forum to see if I've missed something!

    Janet

Edited to say: I've PM'd a friendly Mod to ask for the competition to be pinned....

There it is people, up load to the comp is . . . "Much easier than saving to Photobucket" !!!!

Mmm . . . :g: 'Save as' works in PS and Elements . . . could be the other way round in you program 'save', is there a manual, or an 'on disc manual' more likely?

Questions and Answers: (how to) 'save exif information'?

  7. I've always read most of the posts in the Photo section, even though I know bugger all about photography. Some of the pictures have been outstanding, but apart from the odd time when I've made a simple comment, I really don't know enough about the subject yet to make any constructive criticism. I'm one of those people who know a good picture when I see one, but can't for the life of me figure out exactly what it is that makes it stand out from the rest. Mick, I think most of your pictures are absolutely stunning!

I've just bought a new camera with the intention of taking photographs rather than snapshots. I hope the guys on the Photo section will be forthcoming with their comments! I've already had some invaluable help and advice on getting to grips with my new camera. I know I could join some photography forum, but to be honest I like the guys on here - I've looked at one or two other forums, but they all seem rather too precious, if you know what I mean.

At the moment I'm positively bursting with questions - I hope you guys will be able to provide some answers!

The Photo Forum isn't dead....it's just a bit tired! Let's give it a kick up the backside and get it moving again, eh?

    Janet

Janet you have a way putting your finger on the point; other forums, I agree, can get a bit 'precious' and AN is a bit 'tired'.

You are right HB, snatcher will comment but that is it, sorry I dont comment on your pictures . . . as you say, heavy on PS'ing, I prefer the old fashioned, minimalist, keep it in the camera, 'Box Brownie' style, :P nothing personal mate, I'm just to old to appreciate new styles I suppose. :wheelchair:

I have tried a couple of times to get discussion going, with either little or no response, or, unhelpful comment destroying the effort. At lest this one seems to have jolted a few positive reactions.

Therefore, where do we go from here . . . :g: As far as the competition goes, its the 22nd, there is until next Thursday week 30th before the comp ends. Logging in is no more difficult than doing it on Photobucket, in fact its the same process as signing in on AN and then doing a Photobucket upload, choose the comp month, and give the picture a title. Provided you saved the original 800px 'save as', you don't even have to ad Exif details, is automatic, and you can ad more than one at a time, so its easier than the old upload system.

We have got the time, do us all a favour, give a vote of confidence, take a picture, and put it in the comp. No best 6, no single judge, so we all have a chance to see, evaluate and vote.

This link will take you to the comp page and simple instructions:

    http://www.photocumbria.com/gall/index.php

Janet has already done one, well done!!! Come on guys and gals more please . . .

  8. This is the photo-pic'ie side of an angling based forum. We used to get a lot of 'siting by the lake, rod in hand, I saw . . . ', not so many of those now???

As photographers, how often do you have a camera with you, always - sometimes - at weekends - only in my fishing box - do you go out on special picture sorties?

Personally, I keep a camera with me most of the time when practical, including work, earning a living as a driver, I see things that I register in the mind to come back to or if possible, stop there and then. 'Wall of glass', one of my this months comp entries was a, 'go back when the light is right'. I carry a Canon compact S50 in the car, sometimes I grab a Nikon D40X, in its Lowpro Nova 1 gadget bag, it fits perfectly between the two front seets of my Picasso.

Now the summer is 'nearly hear', the D40X will be more often employed, and the S50 will stay in the glove compartment.

My boat fishing trips, I always have have a camera on board.

    SW

  9. Thinking about this i think part of the problem is that when the comp was on here members who were

browsing the forum had it in front of them and now they have to go elsewhere and log in to do it.

    Cheers Fred

You are right Fred, it was also initiated as a new heading each month, the words 'Fresh topic' come to mind?

We could do with some fresh topics in general terms, thats the other part of this thread, loosing the 'chat/how to/I've been . . . ' side of the forum?

    SW

  10. You have a good point there Janet. I used to look in and vote and even enter quite regularly, but now I have to follow a link etc, I don't seem to bother.

    Den

Yep Den, I think Janet has a point to. Put my link in your 'Favorites' column, I keep an eye out regularly, one click!

    SW

  11. Well, there should be! As I hadn't saved the link, it took me an age to find it tonight, and that was more by luck than good judgement!

I have always followed the monthly competitions, and stand in awe of some of the contributors. I think I've voted on every one since I joined, except the last, simply because I forgot it was there....

Like many others, I lead a busy life and don't always remember things unless they are staring me in the face!

Perhaps some kind Mod would like to pin it?

    Janet

Problem Janet, 'its all a bit of fun' . . . trouble is, even fun comps., get serious to those that follow and enter. The lack of entries and therefore perceived interest? . . . sort of take the edge off don't it? Its a slippery slope . . . I do think 'why bother' sometimes <_< Not being able to see how the vote is going, takes the edge off for me, like watching a football match without seeing the goals or cricket with no runs, even the Euro-vision song contest without the points board . . . :headhurt: , but thats a personal view of course.

Perhaps your comment on pinning 'AN Photo Competition' will be seen? :D

    SW

  12. Definitely NOT best left, not now I've got myself a new camera! :camera:

However, I've just tried searching for the competition for this month, and I just can't find it! Nor can I find the link to the site to look at the pictures currently posted...

I'm sure it's there somewhere, as I know I've voted on the last few, but tonight I just can't find the damn thing....

The link to it really needs to be pinned so that it doesn't go AWOL!

    Janet

Here you go Janet, this is my link I use in my 'Favourites' to cut through the rather converluted way to get to the comp page . . . you know what you may have hit on a reason why the competition is not so well supported. There is no direct link, you have to go through Steve's explanation pages and use the link on one of them!!! Unless there is another way I don't know?

    http://www.photocumbria.com/gall/thumbnail...at=0&page=1

You are right there is no pinned link refering directly to 'competition entries'?

Don't explain the poor use in other more general use and chat?

By the way, 'the best left' comment, was to do with some 'sniping type remarks, with a bit of reaction from myself', all are best left to die naturally. No we, certainly don't want to let the side down . . . do we :D

    SW

  13. I have no wish to be unpleasant, nasty, difficult . . . however, what has happened to the entrants to the 'AN' photo competition. For last month and this month I have count 9 names in total so far? Going back to January 09, there were 21 votes in total on the old system, one vote, one member and in previous months to that I seem to recall even more votes on the same old system, recall one month in 08 the winning picture received 20+ votes alone?? I think thats right, I'm sure someone will jump on me if its wrong

The reason I mention the old system, votes = members voting, there seemed to be lots more entries back when, as well. 16 entries for march = only 7 names . . . :o

So what going on, why? Steve, has worked hard to deliver what was wanted?? so where is the support . . .

Its also very obvious that the photographic site is very under used as a 'discussion medium', 'how to', 'review a product' . . . try to get things going and; . . . :wallbash: . . . . well, perhaps best left?

I pose the questions, don't have the answers, hopping 'members' might? Or, is it me, am I confused and simply got it wrong

    Answers please . . . ?

    SW

  14. I hope she's alright. I'm currently off work with a bad back problem too.

Yes, I did delete the pictures - I forgot I'd posted them on here! They were very sharp and the colours were spot on. I was absolutely delighted!

All the problems were of my own making! I'd been messing around on the day I bought it, and took a picture of one of the girls at work, then turned it into a nice sepia print for her. I was messing around with the different colour settings, and had somehow managed to save the "green" setting!

Am I glad I discovered that before I went storming back into the shop! As it is I'm very happy with the camera at the moment, now that the problems is sorted.

    Take care.

    Janet

;) Remember I did ask if someone had been playing or demonstrating with it when this thread first started . . . B) All's well that ends well. :sun:

    Enjoy, SW

  15. What ever you have done Janet, keep doing it, the pictures you took going to the shops, they are fine, you should be happy with them. Back yard pictures are not showing? I presume you have deleted them from Photobucket.

    DandilionrwSS8506631.jpg

    CherrytreerwSS8506541.jpg

I've had a look at the two pictures in PS Elements, frankly they are very good as far as balance in 'levels' is concerned. Levels shows a graph to indicate how well the colours is distributed, it looks OK to me. I've added a tad of 'sharpening', not an unusual requirement on any photo, regardless of camera.

I'm wondering if the program that came with the camera might be enough to be going on with . . . looks good to me.

So now you seem to have the measure, we had better watch out in the monthly competition . . . B)

Back to some house hold chores for me to, off work to day, getting affairs into shape, Hazel, my partner has a collapsing lowers spinal disk, MRI scans on Friday showed a wedge of bone where the flat disc should be (osteoporosis). It got the orthopedic department pretty excited, waiting for a phone call for admission and emergency operation, could be this afternoon?

    SW, (Cliff)

  16. Her you go Janet, had a little, very quick play, hope you dont mind . . . ? with the good pic you posted. Its not perfect and there are better at it than me. Gives an idea of what can be achieved 'simply' I'm definitely a 'keep it simple stupid' type when it comes to 'post processing'. Thats what it is to me processing as one would expect in the old days of the limited adjustments of the dark room.

    First the Original you posted.

    SS8505761.jpg

This one is mainly adjusting the green and a little sharpening, slight yellowish warm tinge to the image that I find acceptable.

    ReworkedJanetSS8505761.jpg

This is a little cooler, with all three colours just edged off a little.

    ReworkedJanetoptionSS8505761.jpg

If you change brand, this almost certainly wont be needed so much???

All my humble opinion Janet, surprise someone has not put their two penneth in by now, most know my abilities are limited.

    SW

  17. Nope. Not a Canon.....a cheap (uinder £30) dinky little pink Technika camera from Tesco! I have had some brilliant, pin sharp pictures from it, but only when it's in a good mood! It's wonderful with good light, but I always seemed to end up with blurred pictures on dull days and I haven't had one really decent picture using the macro facility.

The Samsung is heading back to the shop shortly - I've found that the lens cover doesn't always close properly as it should. A little tap sets it right, but that shouldn't be necessary on a new item. I will also point out the green/yellow problem as I agree with you that this shouldn't be happening on a brand new camera.

Luckily I didn't delete the pictures from the card, so I can let the guy in the shop see them. I bought it from what I believe to be a decent local camera shop rather than off the shelf from a supermarket, as I wanted a demo first. I hope their after-sales service is good.

Thanks again for the assistance! I'll let you know how I get on.

    Janet

Its your call Janet, but, what about a 'brand change'? on the grounds of 'no faith in brand/product'??? and 'not fit for the purpose for which it was sold'? Depending on budget??? I suspect you could do better? So soon after the sale you will be entitled to your money back, the world is your 'lobster' :P:lol:

    SW

  18. went up Great Gable on sunday and took a photo of the hay stacks with ennerdale fell on one side and buttermere fell on the other

Why not enter it in the comp???

    SW

  19. Thats the point Janet, enjoy. I get very . . . sorry, 'used to get', very frustrated with my self, for not doing as well as other pictures I had seen. Now-a-days, it does not really matter, I do things 'my way' . . . I only have 'me' to impress . . . and . . . I impress myself quite often :D:marinheiro: 'big head, me'

The old camera, not a canon by any chance? colour looks very canon like? and sharp to!

Keep your eye on the 'green/yellow cast', might be a faulty camera??? It really should not do that, its supposed to be automatic! Decide sooner rather than later for a replacement! . . . ?

    SW

  20. This is one that I took yesterday, on the more shaded side of the lake.

    SS850576.jpg

The colours appear much more natural (and also a lot sharper on the full sized photo stored on my PC).

SW - you are very much helping me by pointing out a potential problem. I need to know if it's just down to learning how to use the camera correctly or if there is a real problem that I need to deal with. Technique I can learn, but I can't do anything much if there's something wrong the the camera itself!

    Janet

Well, well, thats just fine Janet, what hapend to the ones that you first posted??? . . . cos I aint got a clue  . . . keep producing them like this one and the technique will come . . . :D By the way, an angler on the staging would have added interest, perhaps with a red hat or somthing bright on for some extra colour . . . Just a tad over exposed (would have killed the green a bit to) by 1/3-1/2 a stop, a toch of sharpening, all can be added when you get a PhotoShop type program. The review says the camera has manual control so thats something for the future to help this type of shot, dont worry about that for now though, auto for the time being. Keep pressing that shutter, enjoy, you will get a natural urge to start playing seriously with the manual controls. To many, IMHO are pushed to early into fighting the camera, its not a fight :P

Very good, framed the staging (and ghost angler? ) with the bushes etc., pity about the cars in the background, you will learn.

    Well don, SW

  21. Janet, I dont know that I'm helping, just pointing out a problem B)

This is a pic of part of my back garden, very uninteresting subject, but it was taken on 'Auto White Balance'. This is how I asses my setting, picture, streight on screen, make changes, another pic, onto screen . . . etc.

    BackgardenrwDSC_0726.jpg

I have problems with green saturation, but not the colour cast.

Try the pre stets, see what they give, Sun, Cloud, and Shade are the ones that should be relevent for day light, there will be a couple of others for artificial light, Flash, Tungsten and Strip light. I wonder if there is a set and press to confirm button?? Comparing what I have on screen that you posted (very green/yellow dog for instance) is what you have in the original like that or more natural colour like the samples I posted from the review site? Wondering if the posting program you used has changed something in the posting process?

You could try the white paper as well, then shoot a sample of each as you set them, to get a comparison.

    SW

  22. Janet, these are a couple of pictures I have up loaded from a S850 review as quality samples. Greens especialy are saturated but they canot be dascribed as having a green cast. How do they compare with what you have in your computer folder? Also compare them with the shots you have posted.

    L1.jpg

    L2.jpg

Put them up big for a fair comparison.

So they are acceptable, greens a bit OTT, not a problem I need to tame greens on my Nikon D80 on occasions!!!

I still think the White Ballance is not set right on your camera. The review mentions custome 'wb' facility, has some one been playing?? . . . demonstrating before you got it!

As far as manipulating programs are concerned, there are a few half decent 'freebies' about, but the users of said freebies on this site will need to give you details, I use 'PhotoShop Elements 7'. Very good IMHO, but £30 from Amazon, as you have spent the 'house keeping' this weeks, its best you stick to a freeby, more than adequate for a while, I would say, one step at a time.

    SW

  23. Janet the pics I see on my screen have a strong green/yellow cast, suspect your White Balance is not set to Auto? Worth checking, do all your pics have a green cast? Cant check this end with Exif, you probably saved with just 'Save'? If you use 'Save as' in the same menu, this will keep Exif details attached and we can check and help.

    Any one else see this?

    SW

  24. Took some Little S plugs and ondex spinners down to my local beach and had six schoolie Bass, behind me a bunch of twitchers were watching a Ring ouzel and a Wheatear so I ambled down to twitch both birds afore returning to catch no more Bass.

The baited rod produced some baby Pout but as yet no Lobsters.

Nice to be back after suffering a marriage breakdown and the big C.

My first session since august 2007 and I was well chuffed with the results, Having to put your life on hold and fight for it with cancer made me realise that I must fish as much as I can.

No more dilly dallying around just get the rods and fish.

    sooo nice to be back.

    C.

You ain't alone mate, you have to fight. Been there, not quite got the tea shirt . . . not with the marriage bit fortunately and not personally with the 'BIG C' but 'looking from the outside in' can be just as devastating. Lost my dear late wife to cancer in 1995, fishing went out of the window for 4 years, as did most other things, move on . . . My partner Hazel, fought and overcame it in the year of 2006, the difference, we, thats the 'Royal we', carried on life as normal? as normal as possible that is . She likes a bit of fishing . . . ?? more messing about on our boat, but she will wet a line occasionally, now in full remission.

I firmly believe Hazels resolve to carry on regardless was the strength we both needed. Now she has a collapsing spine!!! :headhurt: She is 4" shorter than she was a year ago! But the resolve is there, get through and face the world she says.

Good old British resolve, 'dont dilly dally', you got that right 'benacre'. We, that 'Rw' again, we have enjoyed a simple Easter, bit of fishing, boating, eating out and just plain relaxing.:marinheiro:
