Well, I read it and can only assume that this "journalist" recommends we ban fishing (and shooting) because something needed "banning". Something noisy that is.

All it sounded like to me, was that the bloke was complaining about the sound of shotguns going off. There was no arguement as to why hunting and coarsing should have stayed a legal sport and hunting and fishing should have been banned instead.

It would appear very much to me, that the man was suffering from a hangover. Following too much christmas spirit and having to hear the guns making their racket on boxing day simply made it worse for him. Hence the reason it would have been better to ban shooting, and fishing?

Just a selfishly motivated way of firing up the "Anti's" all over again with little or no sensible / reasonable motive.

  2. From the Dictionary "an act undertaken to increase your own power and influence or to draw attention to your own importance"

    Cheers mate.

I wasn't taking the P, I just truly didn't know and not having a dictionary, it left me kind of stumped but interested too in its meaning.

Funny how our local and national govt is full of such people though. What amazes me is how they manage to talk others into voting for them!

  3. So the conservative party is in favour of the marine bill and in fact are annoyed that it was not in place two years ago as planed?

Being in opposition gives you the unrealistic opportunity of never having to upset anybody with your “tell them what they want to hear” promises.

It’s a pity that the conservatives and lib dems could not have been more supportive when it came to the minimum wage, or the working hour’s directive. still they where very supportive of destroying all our national industry’s and privatising so many departments within the national health service that we find it hard to come out of hospital nowadays healthier than when we went in.

it was good of the Tories to sell of all our local government housing and then retain all the money made in order to pay for the millions that there polices had made unemployed and at the same time they gave away our national assets like British telecom etc to try and make people believe that capitalism was the only way forward.

Yea a great party to vote for if you have only got a memory that goes back to what you caught last week.

    Regards.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter what a mans politics is, its down to whether or not you feel that particular man / mp / local councillor is representing what you count as being important in your life. Any politician that will work for the true betterment of britain as a nation, whether it be in fishing, immigration, minimum wage, maximum hours (which has seriously decreased some peoples pay that they were happy enough earning), education or health service will get my vote. Not because of the label attached to the organisation they belong to, but because he is willing to stand and fight (so to speak) for the betterment of the whole country. Not just the rich, not just the poor. Not just the white and not just the coloured / migrant community, but EVERYONE!

  4. As an ACA member, my concern is that with the mass amalgamation of all these bodies, with the wild variation in the quality of their elected/non elected Management, the wrong people could end up at the top of this very important tree.

Politically aware people and good administrators we need, I worry a lot about the over enthusiastic conservationist and self aggrandisement bunch.

Methinks its time to do an audit of who I am supporting, financially and otherwise.

    Hi Cranfield

Sorry to sound stupid, thick or anything else, but what on earth are "self aggrandisement" people?

I really should have attended school a little more often!

    Andy

  5. Hi Bob

Was this a message for all to read thru or just the ACA members?

I'l assume you meant it for all, ok.

To be honest with you, I cannot understand why there is not just one main body to represent the interests of ALL anglers. No matter what flavour of water they fish in or bait they use. Obviously, there would need to be subdivisions to handle issues within the various branches of the sport. But for so long now, the UK's anglers have all sat there shaking their own little rattles in the air instead of having one loud voice to air their views and issues, that I honestly believe its been counter-productive.

Anyway, good luck with it all. ESPECIALLY the dreaded paperwork side of things

  6. And who drew their attention to the numbers of sea anglers?

Was it not us, the sea anglers that brought to the attention of the Govt, how many people enjoy and participate in the sport of sea fishing? Through organisations like the NFSA, we have been petitioning the govt for ages and ages for the so called rights of the leisure fisherman. To be honest, I am surprised that its taken ANY govt in this country so long to realise the extra taxation potential thats been quietly congregating on the beaches, piers, rocks and boats of the UK. Lets face it, when there's an opportunity to gain some extra revenue through taxation, our various govts over the years dont normally miss a beat! As such, I suppose we should be "grateful" that we, as anglers, have remained out of the govt's gaze for so long.

Personally, I will NOT buy a sea fishing rod license. I will wait a couple of years and see what the govt is doing to help protect and police the rod and line anglers rights before deciding whether or not I buy a license and carry on fishing, or whether I pack it in all together. Deep down inside, I dont believe that the leisure fishermen will gain a thing out of this exploitation of themselves. Further more, I also believe that it may well follow along the same lines as the freshwater license. Where you are limitted to two fishing rods. More than enough some may say. But when, like me, I take along enough tackle for myself, my young son and one or two of his friends, then am I to stump up for them as well?

I believe there will be those that pay and continue to fish in dessimated waters, those that don't pay and continue to fish (making a mockery of those that do pay) and those that give it up all together.

    Andy

  7. Barry

It got called off, :( force 6 winds in the estuary; needless to say it was after I had bought my bait which is now safely esconced in Matt's Mum's freezer (we have ran out of room).

    Tony

    Hi Tony.

Was that Saturday 23rd? I only ask because my son still managed to make his trip out of Walton on the Naze that day. Nothing amazing was caught by any rods. Half a dozen small tope, some smooth hounds and a skate. Biggest catch of the day was the cable that became entangled with the anchor and took the skipper a while to get rid of.

But, at the end of the day, its the skippers call as to whether or not to chance things with the weather and I dare say he feels worse about losing a days money than you do about losing a days fishing, so I can't and wouldn't knock him for it.

    Andy :)

  8. Sorry Jabee. Would love to be able to go, but its a little far for me at the mo. No car and still bashed up from the accident I lost it in.

Toerag - Well done mate!! On all accounts

    Andy :)

  9. You show me yours and i'll show you mine :P Click on me name, the one showing in there is over thirty. Where we go down weymouth, the skipper recons that there is a british record down there, He narrowly missed it last year with one a couple of pounds off, the week after i had my fun. Don't want to say much more as the scottish guys an here will put us to shame with the real biggies.

I know that there are good ones off folkestone seen the photgrapths, as for the conger i have also tried to get guys interested as i know they are out there, still one day.

That aint fair, you got a bigger one than me, lol.

Seriously though, both my friend John and myself were more than happy enough with our fish as they were also new species for us at the time and beat the hell out of our own personal best rays. Come to think of it, John's personal best fish was a cod of 10lb at the time, so he was most probably as chuffed as someones going to get :D

Once I have recovered from my car crash I had on Monday along the my knee op that was done on Tuesday, i think it will be time to have a word with our skipper to go looking for those big eels. It will most likely be a succession of blanks, but like I said before, they have to be out there and sooner or later we WILL find them! I'm kind of in two minds as to how to go about it though. Personally, I favour just the skipper my son Jack and I taking out the boat and trying various wrecks and marks we both know of. But there is a line of logic that says, "More baits in the water = greater chance of a fish!". Not to mention the stumping up of the full cost of the boat on my own.

    Andy :)

  10. This one was John's (Old bloke in photo) best of the day at 28lb. I had great fun watching him being dragged from where he was fishing just behind the wheelhouse all the way back to the transom.

It was one of those silly days where only the two people on one side of the boat caught fish. They came in ever increasing sizes from about a 10lb starting fish.

    Andy :)

  11. Hi Andy, it is me who apologises for the delay as i couldn't get through all the mod posters as they were coming thick and fast, me eyes were getting dizzy trying to read em. :) We do folkestone once a month for the past don't know how long. Don't know why really and you are not missing anything of importance but it's a good crack. Now and again we might have a good bass or a rare cod. No one fishes for conger or blonde ray as there is no interest so one day someone might pull one out of note.

Good luck to your boy on his tope quest.

    Thanks Barry.

My first trip out of Folkestone was, as it happens, the best one! I'll try and upload some photo's of the blondes we pulled ;)

As for conger fishing, I have been trying to convince my local skippers to try for them for absolutely ages! We may not have the depths of water available here in the northern end of the Thames Estuary that they have along the English Channel, but they (conger) just have to be out there on the many wrecks that are within reach of the local boats.

  12. I did wonder when that most excellent of TV programmes, "Deadliest Catch" was going to be brought up. I am one of those sad people that enjoys seeing how ALL forms of fishing are carried out. Not just the rod and line fun that we all enjoy. But as someone else in this thread pointed out, this is an ANGLING forum, not a have a poke at the commercial fishermen forum.

Live and let live. Who knows, it may be a commercial fishing boat that comes to the rescue of the anti's one day when the boat they are miles out to sea on, breaks down and needs a tow home!

    Andy :)

  13. Careful John, don't want to go getting too sharp there mate. You'll end up slicing the screen in half.

The good news being the fact you got yourself a new record!!! :clap2::thumbs::clap2::thumbs::clap2:

Go Da Man!!! "Crowd stands, roars and goes wild. Then trips falls over and knocks his cup of tea flying across the room and realises that he forgot to get his crutches before standing up", lol

    Andy

  14. Bugger, 2 minutes to approve that one  I will beat my record I promise you that....

With the smilies, miss out the nose ;)

Jeez John, with a trunk like mine, its kinda hard to miss out the nose. Know what I mean ;)

    Andy

  15. tatts64 - if you dislike the forum rules and quality of moderation you find here, feel perfectly free to go elsewhere.

take the mick out of people, purely in jest

That is only possible on forums if you do post jests rather than sarcastic remarks with a smiley and is much easier after you have gotten to know the other members and they you.

Stay and participate if you wish but I suggest you lighten up a little.

I am about as light as anyone's going to get without flying or blowing away in the wind, Newt. The docs got me on morphine and it tends to inflict a person with a certain amount of "chilled -ness" to quote my son. I was merely trying to put across, in a polite manner, a point to a given person. I welcome your input though and will endeavour to use the official smileys as you suggest, ok mate.

    Andy :)

  16. How long do you think it was between you posting and me approving? My computers out of sync (and date), I reckoned about 3 minutes....

Cant say for sure, John, but I had enough time to refresh the page twice and roll one of those disgusting an unhealthy cigarettes in between F5's and hey presto, there it was.

So if it didn't beat your record, it was damned close to it!

As for the smileys, I foolishly assumed that they would appear using the usual ":-)" as it does on some other forums sites I am on. I see that it doesn't so I'll apologise again for that one.

Yep, I just read the fishing report I believe you were referring to. I believe your parting words on the matter were "THREAD CLOSED!" Remind me to salute next time we cross paths, ok John :D;)

    Andy

  17. Yes, sorry about the delays Barry, but I reckon 3 minutes between Tatts64 posting this message and me noticing that there was a message that needed approval is pretty good going! Very near my record of one (1) minute in fact....

Tatts - the reason why we put newcomers on mod-approval is because some posters in the past have decided to post under new names and cause havoc on these forums. Prior to that, people could register on here and then post without needing moderator approval. It is only for a total of 15 posts, live with it.

    Hi John.

Yes, I read why there needs to be a certain amount of posts to go by before a new member is deemed to be genuine (for want of better words), John.

My words in the previous post to Barry were not meant to cause offence, but if they have, then I am willing to apologise. Although if you read it the way it was meant, you will see it was meant in jest. The kind of light hearted banter that might fly about among fellow anglers, nothing more.

I have also read in previous posts (going back some time here) where some of the more well established members of this forum have "stuck one into" a kid of 14 that didn't exactly use the queens english in the way that he wrote and even though he was genuinely asking for advice and help from his peers and seniors in this pass time / hobby / sport, the next few posts that I read proceeded to rip into him with regards to his lack of grammar etc. These were followed by others basically fighting back by the "Mr average" sort of people that hadn't eaten a page from the Oxford English Dictionary for breakfast each morning for most of their lives. what really got to me, was the strength of this lad by coming back on here and actually apologizing for causing an argument. The fact that instead of just thinking this place was contaminated with people more worried about the correct spelling of a given word rather than the essentials of such a site - to promote the safe enjoyment of fishing and co-operation amongst fellow anglers is what impressed me enough to want to become a member of it. Although I would like to add that the moderators should have stepped in well before hand and either deleted the posts in question or at least encouraged the writers of them to go back and edit them themselves.

So, I would like to point out that I do take the mick out of people, purely in jest and where I feel they are man or woman enough to enjoy the funny side of life and, indeed, I am the first to do the same of myself. but if this cannot and will not be tolerated, then tell me now and I will delete my profile and trouble you and yours no more.

    Cheers, Andy :-)

  18. Sorry to hear about that. I used to try with guys but the excuse was cuts to the toe nails, wife won't let me etc so i don't bother as much now, so i go on me own or with one or two. Where abouts do you go. what do you fish for. Mind you i've had to cancell three trips this month, first time ever due to an op, so i'm allowed. Some times we are on the road at 3.30 am tight lines.

Sorry about the delays in getting these messages posted Barry. I don't know how many more I'll have to do before the moderators deem me fit for the tender little eyes around here, lol.

Anyway, I used to go out of Folkestone a lot with several "friends". One by one, they let me down and things just got way too expensive. Also, the fact I had to travel from Harwich to the place made it a bit of a killer when we had 4a.m. starts etc!

As it is, I now use Walton on the Naze. Its Better than my own town for getting out to sea and having a marina there (Titchmarsh), it means we don't have to leave at silly o'clock anymore. I am hoping that this weekend will give my boy a chance to beat his 23 1/2lb record as last week, the skipper had about 10 tope between 10lb and 15lb, half a dozen skate and two good tope of 32lb and 42lb respectively.

As for the winter, I tend not to fish too much as I have to pay too heavier a price thru my back injury. Basically, it doesn't like the cold weather and being tossed about on a boat all day.

    Andy :-)

  19. A superb tope for the youngster, thanks for sharing it with us. Welcome Andy

    Cheers Barry.

Our biggest problem this year isn't finding fish, but reliable people to go fishing. This saturday coming, dropped from 6 to 3 over night. I had a bad car crash on monday and now cant go and the other two decided they cant be bothered to get up for a 7a.m. departure?!?!?!? Some people eh!!

    Thanks again Barry

    Andy

  20. No Bass about worth a bash yet!!!!!

Had one of 15lb last weekend off the Longsand Head in the Thames Estuary a fortnight ago. But now I know there's none worth chasing, I'l save my bait for another day. Just kidding mate - about saving the bait

    Andy :-)

  21. Hello mate.

Went out to the other side of the Longsand Head last fortnight and had a couple of pack tope along with a few hounds n skate. Got a trip out on Saturday too, even though I wont be able to go on it myself (car crash on Monday), but my mate and son will be going so hopefully, they'll have a good day.

  22. Hi Dave and thanks for the reply.

Sorry for the lateness of my response. I am moving house and have no internet connection right now. I have managed to borrow my girlfriends pc for 5 mins to get here.

I have spoken to the resort manager for the Island I am heading to and been told of this too.

I was looking at hiring a boat out there for a few trips, but if I am not going to get to haul my own fish then I think I'll leave my money in my back pocket and look forward to Gambia in 2009!

    Thanks again mate

    Andy

  23. Hi Gilbo

    You're most welcome mate.

I'm from Harwich, North Essex. Just think of East Anglia as the shape of a butt and you'l have no trouble locating the town ;)

Its mainly all shallow water here by comparison to the south coast. Hence the reason uptiding came from this neck of the woods - Thames Estuary.

I would imagine that the ship insurers did a fairly good job of cleaning up and getting back what they could from the wreck. I am just grateful it was only a container ship and not a tanker. Imagine the pollution and death that would have wreaked upon the local marine and wildlife !!

    Andy
