they are being caught from the shore in north devon now, the spring tides have brought them in!

would anyone going to exmouth tomorrow have a kayak Drain bung for sale, loan or gratis, as mine got lost transporting it today, just bloody typical.
after a frantic hour of looking for it and thinking of an alternative like a cork ect, i have put a wine bottle stopper in there just for now which seems to seal ok but not the best solution.

Has anyone else used these inflatable HandiRack roofracks, can they damage your roof, are they secure enough to carry a 28kg Kayak long distances at 50mph ect?

Is it a club meet? I'd like to join a local club so that I can find a fishing buddy - my wife is worried about me fishing alone!

btw ppl the devon county show is on this thurs, fri, saturday so traffic coming off the M5 at junction 30 onto the A376 for wespoint may be a pain as its the same junction as the exmouth turning.

I can't speak for Cannonfodder but circumstances kind of dictate what you wear.
completely agree jeff, atm i'm a bit of a fair weather kayaker, i use shorts when its hot and my flotation suit when its cold, not ideal, especially if you end up getting wet, but i haven't yet picked up a dry suit though its on my, to purchase list.
in the summer i'd have thought a wet suit would be perfect though.
i use a surfboard leash so i don't end up drifting away from my kayak so time in the sea is minimal, and i also wear my pfd other than when anchored up in good conditions, but i do carry a sleeping bag, large towel and a flask of tea in the hull as i know from years of shore and boat fishing, just how quick hypothermia can set in, but in the summer months hyperthermia is also an issue, especially if you are overdressed. The amount of city folk, (sry about the stereotype, me living in devon an all) i have seen taken by ambulance after a day in the sun is shocking, ppl just don't realise how dangerous it is and when you are at sea with the suns reflection and paddling can all raise your temperature very quickly.

well i paddled out to a mark between Ilfracombe and Lee Bay around 1km off the shore, on sat 10th may. i set off early and intended to fish the slack water over the top of the tide.
The tides were dropping off of springs, but still a good 5 or so knots on the 8.3mtr tide. made it to my mark and anchored up, down tide of the rough ground about a 100 yards using speciman's dry bag anchor system, which has always worked great in the past.
I fished over the top of the tide, pulled up anchor and moved anchor for the ebb. dropped the anchor and started fishing. about 3/4, of an hour after the top of the tide, the water started to run and i noticed, while keeping lookout for the skippers that love to flood you with their wake, that my dry bag and marker buoy was being pulled under the water and the air was being squeezed from the dry bag because of the force of the tide, i have a 25lt bag that i always twist at least 6 times to for a seal.
Anyway's i though id call it a day after a couple of dog fish and a 10lb strap ell so stowed all my gear and then set about getting the anchor in, i pulled the bag and rope in which by this time was completely submerged, but i knew the tide was ebbing and i wasn't too concerned that i would be pulled to the bottom, so i disconnected my divers reel from the quick release rope and started to heave allowing the anchor line to flow down tide so it couldn't snag me up and pull me under if the worst happened, my anchor had either buried in deep or had snagged as it wouldn't budge an inch.
I put my foot up towards the front of my yak so i could pull and keep my bow into the flow and was pulling with the hope of the anchor snag release, giving out so it would pull out upside down. But as i gave it a huge tug the line slipped from around my foot cam down the side of the boat and put me broadside to the tide and started to flip my yak, i quickly shifted my weight to the opposite side and just managed to save myself from a dunking, but as i compiled myself i noticed that i had wrapped the anchor rope around my hands to stop any slipping. After a pause and several colourful words at my stupidity i cut the line.

hi as a newbie to yak fishing,yak arrives in 10 days now
can i ask what u fellas wear mainly in the summer.north devon day time i'm mostely in my birthday suit catching some rays, shorts and a rash top for the beach!
i think a few wear full dry suits but i do it on the chep and hope i don't have to spend tooo much time in the water!

I wouldent bother mate , if you go have look around a good chandlers you can get all sizes in stainless , the small ones you probably need are 1.99, or close ,,,,,,
it was just for attaching small items so they didn't end up at the bottom, the reason i wanted plastic is so i don't have to listen to constant tapping while on the water.

How far would you consider going away from the shore ?, I understand in the states sometimes they go out several miles. What is a safe distance in your opinion ?
i've been offshore about 2 miles in the bristol channel but i had a vhf for weather, knew the tides and the outlook was calm and sunny, regardless of this its still a bit scary fishing in 30mts of water over pinnacles that tower to 10mtrs below your keel! great fishing though.
if you are looking for fish grab yourself a sea chart and look for where the fish will be, just because you are far out doesn't mean that the fishing will be better!
3 years ago at woolacombe, n.devon, a bunch of lads from the army base at chivenor set off to paddle to lundy island a 20mile paddle with no radio, gps being cocky as hell on the beach in front of all the woman, two days later they landed at porthcawl, wales, after getting washed up and down by the tide.
just be aware of the tides and conditions, maybe a day skipper course could help.

nice boat adam but it looks like you may have to w8 until next weekend to get out on the sea, what about going for a paddle from instow or little america (the parking area towards torrington just up from the old bridge bideford)

i went out off coastguards on Wednesday for a few hours, just two doggies. i was going to give it a try off of outfalls(pier end of the tunnels) as they have been catching a few bass but i got the tides back to front so headed up the coast with the tide as its a nightmare paddling past capstone with the ebb.
nxt time you are off out pm on messenger adam as summer fishing is just about to kick off.
btw there are still a few spurdogs being caught off of watermouth, they are always good sport when the tope aren't about!
