  1. i took the advice and lashed the wheels on further up the hull, because there is a raised section of hull just behind the seat on my yak it stops it slipping and almost perfectly balances out the boat so pulling it along is a lot easier but the ground clearance is a pain going up or down slopes.

  2. i am new to kayaking so not sure about different seats but i have this boyancy aid

    with this seat:

    strike_moss_angle.gif

and it is easy to get back onto the boat after a roll, in still water anyway and adds to the support of the seat imo as its a lot more comfortable with the life jacket that with my flotation suit.

btw i use a surf board leash to make sure the kayak doesn't blow away from me, is this a bad idea or does anyone else do the same?

  3. Hi CF just put the Leebay Wreck in GPS along with loads of other points along North Devon do you fancy paddling out to Lee in morning for a few drifts over wreck (if it is a proper wreck) and let tide take us back to combe after LW unless wind gets up in morning if so then under hangman in Combe Martin as this would be really sheltered from an easterly and always a chance of nice pollock out there

i've gotta do the family bit tomorrow but hopefully i can get out sunday. watch that easterly wind if you go to lee. the wreck towards bull point is still intact and a good fish holding spot, just take plenty of tackle!

  4. Because of it being the end of the summer its difficult to pick up pirks so i thought i'd post a good shop to get them from.

these fast jigs are great for using over pinicls and wrecks and very effective, some of my best fish have been take on the Williamson Benthos jig.

    https://www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/___Vertical_Jigging.html

these jigs are have stood the test of time and are effective for cod and pollock ect, but they can be easily made with a few chrome bars from your local tip cut to your chosen length and filled with lead.

  5. hahaha...i nearly choked on my coffee then....have you been and tried it mate??

yes, it lifts and slots back in. you have 360 degree movement!

this is the last post i make for a while, me thinks!

  6. Hi......that looks like the same mount that i have, but if i lift the holder itself up about half inch,i can then turn it in any direction i want before locking it back into place.

    oh....... do i feel dumb!

  7. here bottom of the page

    http://tinyurl.com/2b49jk

this is the mount i already have.

    scotty-deck-mount.jpg

if you look inside there is a nylon lock and a hole on the rod holder itself that locks it into position, what i want to be able to do is instead of having the rod point forward have it angled 30 degrees or so from the bow.

  8. I have a scotty Bait Caster / Spinning Rod Holder fixed with a combination deck or side mount, but it will only allow one position, forward, is there any extensions out there so i can adjust the rod position?

  9. I know this topic has come up many times before after searching the forums but rather than the debate of they are dangerous. they are not dangerous argument etc for the people using them what ones do you have (make, material and type) eg Ron Thomson, Neoprene, Chest and if you were to buy again would you buy the same or is there another version you would get

For the people that dont like them what dry trousers and dry boots do you use were they keep you fully dry when launching etc as where I launch I have to go up to at least just past my knees before I get on

    Hope the above makes sense

eek, that sounds like concrete boots to me.

  10. The more I use mine, the more I dislike it, the straps slip, the trolley slides out, it causes flat spots on the hull, its heavy, the stay leg falls off, its too expensive and I'm going off the colour

    Bb.

i am starting to think the same, but i will try strapping either in front of the seat as the moulding would stop slipping or through the carry handles.

  11. looking at the old post several members say you do not need insurance for surfboards .well here in the channel islands we have always had to reg boards and insure for third party .joining the local surf club used to be the cheapest . as far as kayaks are concerned not compulsory as yet but i can see it happening with the numbers increasing year by year .

i wasn't overly concerned about injuries to a 3rd party i was thinking more along the line of if my yak got damaged in transit on if i run aground and damage the hull.

  12. You could try putting the trolley at the front of the kayak and tow it backwards. It's worth a try.

ah, never thought of that. thanks will give it a go next outing.

    @ YakDiver.

    lol. thanks for the advice!

  13. i have a ctugg system to transport my boat about which worked fine for the first ten or so outings but now it slips off all the time, any suggestions on how i can get it to hold better?

    c_tug_trolley_s.jpg

my hull is an islander strike the same mould as the old wilderness systems ride, it is flat in the middle with two bulges on the outside of the hull either side, shaped like a "w".

  14. Hi CF

Would I be correct in saying I could go with tide towards leebay and fisharound there on drifts until lowtide then tide would help bring me back after it turns ? I do not want to get it wrong with 10m tides running !!

btw just finishing my temporary mount until I get my hatches sorted will have to go with sucker mount this weekend but at least it can be stuck onto the wooden chopping board when im finished as picture (little grainy as was done on phone just as I finished in dark)

    http://www.sibbald.eclipse.co.uk/fishfinder.jpg

you can, just watch the wind. if you stick close to the shore the current doesn't run so bad but the way back will be easy enough once the tide starts running. you can launch from lee bay if you don't fancy the paddle! hopefully i can get out tomorrow so i may see you there!

low water is at 14:17 btw and they outlook is not bad.

  15. I have the malibu two xl and even though I live in a town with large harbour the local chandlers never seem open and what ive seen through window are useless and extremely expensive :(

there is an ocean kayak prowler fully rigged out to aussie spec in woolacombe adam. it has all electronics, anchor trolly system, rudder and a whole host of other goodies, it may be worth a visit to get an idea on how to fit yours out!

    http://www.northdevonkayakcentre.co.uk/

    he is on south street:

    NDKC%20001.jpg

i know what you mean about pete krangs chandlers though, he has very little stock but he can order stuff.

i have used these for a few parts: http://marinestore.co.uk/

and this american retailers for the pad eyes and rivits: http://www.kayakfishinggear.com/

    pad eyes: http://www.kayakfishinggear.com/index.asp?...D&ProdID=74

    kayak rivits: http://www.kayakfishinggear.com/index.asp?...D&ProdID=75

    clamcleat: http://www.kayakfishinggear.com/index.asp?...D&ProdID=85

If I anchor or want to hook up from the stern do I need another clamcleat facing the other way ?

can you not use a side facing clamcleat, instead of two?

  16. Hi CF you will have to let me know how you get on, Ive been keeping an eye on the weather/swell sites and the weekend does look good!! another long day out I hope on kayak, I used memory map to track my route last week eg, Hele to just past watermouth and then back over to tunnels beach then back to the harbour slipway thats 11km in total :) and was all paddling as the tide didnt seem to be moving when I was out there only the wind pushing me offshore/full on against paddling back towards combe :(

btw Ive had a look at the Garmin Atlantic maps and it shows a wreck just off leebay do you know what it is ? must be worth trying a few drifts over ?

    link to map - http://www.sibbald.eclipse.co.uk/marinemap.jpg

i knew there was a wreck in lee bay but i thought it was on the sandy cove side of the bay. Its going to be a good day for kayaking tomorrow t 29th so i may go and have a look!

  18. if there is any angle to the transducer at all you will not get the correct depth or reading as it will be pointing away from the boat not down to the sea bed. have you not got a screw mounting at the back of your boat where your rudder fits adam? you could use a suction pad but it will create drag and if its side mounted it will pull your boat to the side.

maybe getting a hatch fitted is the best idea. after drilling and chopping my kayak about, that i was very reluctant to do, i can say it is worth it and fairly easy to do with the right tools.

here is the hatch fitting guide i was given: http://www.anglersafloat.co.uk/KayakProject.html

  19. Thanks all for the replies, cant wait to get out and test it but doesnt look like any night this week wind is howling and a 10.3m tide on thursday too. Looking to make a temp fixing as dont want to drill the maliblu two xl just yet in case wife doesnt take to it and I can then sell on and get a single seater prowler or similar ;)

Hey CF hows you getting on with yours did you fit it yesterday ? I bet your the same cant wait to get out and test as well !! Have you thought about doing the estuary as a friend paddles out that way (doesnt fish as its a 6.5m !!! Ski) but said there loads of bass in there at mo !!

there is bass galore down crow point and right up the estuary, in the winter at crow you can catch good cod in the pits there just this side of the port buoy.

i fitted my transducer this morning 25/9/07 and will be going out to test tomorrow or thursday as the weather is settling down apparently!
