  1. Had another good day at eastbourne, it was a reasonably calm day so thought i might be in with a chance of a fish or 2.

Once the mackerel shoals started moving through i hooked up to a couple and used the smallest one as bait, though unfortunatley i didnt get one take on this, does anyone know what kind of size joey mackerel i should be using as live bait?

Nothing on lures either apart from mackerel so i switched over to live floated prawns and picked up 2 nice schoolie bass, one for tea!

Just goes to show you should always be prepared and ALWAYS have some live bait to hand, i could only find 8 decent prawns this morning in the kelp but boy am i glad i slogged along those rocks for those!

    Tight lines

you can use any size dude, just remove the backbone to create a flapper, even a 3lb bass will quite happily take a whole mackerel. the best bait i used is live sand ell, with just a 1oz lead to take it down but it may be hard to keep them alive with the limited space on a kayak.

insert the knife just before the dorsal fin either side of the back bone, remove it and hoook it up with a set of 6o's pennel rig.

  2. 2.5kg may be a bit heavy and those prices seem a bit steep.

Try the lighter 0.75kg anchor as its good enough if there are no major flows.

Less weight to carry and haul up at the end of the day.

do you know a good online chandlers as our local one really does not cater for kayaks.

  3. Hi Cannonfodder,

Welcome to the madhouse, first of all may I say that you are in the right place to have all your questions answered.

I myself am a ex Ilfracombe lad and know the shores well over there so please be very aware about the tides and currents on the North Coast even though it is very tempting to launch from the harbour and fish around Hillsbourgh and Capstone on a fine day they are alot of hidden dangers around there.

If you are ever around the Torbay area it is always worth dropping a message on here as you will no doubt be joined by a couple of the local guys who will all be willing to have you tag along.

thank you for your concerns, but i am well aware of the tidal conditions and fast currents in this area, i used to crew for dave clements a long time ago on the silver fox and have a skippers licence myself, i'm just new to fishing from a kayak.

the tides are great around here for this sport as a 5knot current takes you a good distance.

    Hi Cannonfodder

Have you been out fishing yet and how did you get on ? I am from Ilfracombe too and picked up a Malibu Two XL so can use with the family but also intend fishing from, eg Launch from Hele, Combe Martin and Woolacombe

i launched from larkstone beach yesterday 1 hour before bottom so i'd get a little of the outgoing tide and experience paddling against the current seems the tides are running fairly fast atm because of building springs.

i managed to get to bull point light house in a little over 1 1/2 hours taking it easy exploring all the bays. i caught a bass going past the tunnels over the vast amount of gully's there but only the one fist so far. i will go out from shell beach soon and jig over the pinicales just off mort point but not toooooo close to the races.

i paddled out about 1000 yards and caught the current back to ilfracombe and got back in under an hour, they i went around hillsbourougher exploring the fishing potential there and landed on hele before going back to larkstone. this fishing potential is awsome in this area especially spinning/plugging/trolling for bass and jigging for pollock ect. personally i wouldn't like to try targeting the ells, rays or tope as i dont fancy being dragged out to lundy!

picture overlooking larkstone beach with the pier in the distance, you cant really see the beach but its a good spot to launch with all day parking for £2.80 right from where the pic is taken. and ramps down to the beach:

btw did you know we have leading lights in ilfracombe now?

  4. When I ask where to fish I don't mean launch spots or exact locations.

What I mean is when I have launched where to go next. So far I have been spinning and trolling along the edge of the rocks and beaches. So far I haven't blanked, but I also haven't caught anything of note.

I have been searching through past threads and found out some useful info on tactics with bait.

But once I have paddled out where to head for, I don't have a fishfinder or GPS yet so cannot locate exact marks or underwater features. So should i just paddle a reasonable distance out, lower my rig and wait or is this likely to result in nothing. Should I anchor in one spot or drift with the tide.

I know this is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. But any advice would be welcomed.

hi i live in north devon (ilfracombe) and in the summer there is a huge amount of inshore hot spots.

my favourite is going from barricane beach in woolacombe and heading over to mort ho point targeting big bass that are plenty full from may to september good pollock over the pinnacles that lie 100yards from shore. there is the usual supply of bubbling mackeral but these are more of an annoyance.

there is a fairly steep path to barricane as you can see but its managable!

  5. Humminbird 215 is a capable entry level unit at around £80 or so (I myself chose it over the Garmin) and has the additional advantage of a 2 year warranty.

what do you use as a power source as none of these fish finders are battery (4xaa) operated are they?

  6. 0.75 with some chain and plenty of line should suffice - it held me on Sunday in a 3ft swell and 16mph wind with current in the same direction.

would that be heavy enough to hold in the bristol channel? where is a good place to purchase it from? btw how much and what grade/weight chain would you use and what length?

  7. hello all. i have purchased myself a new kayak an islander, strike http://www.islandersitontops.com/strike.htm and have started to fish from it looking for friendly community to share stories and tips with.

i live in Ilfracombe, north devon, uk and have many suitable launch points within 10 miles of my location with a wide range of fish to target. i have fished from the shore for over 20 years and have only now plucked up the courage to take to see!
