Ive found that adding a small amount of cornflour to paste will stiffen it up enough to use.

I agree, the cost of some tackle and bait is way over the top. I was fortunate enough to win £100 of Dynamite's Marine Halibut baits and havent had to lay out much on bait so far this year, but I was surprised at the price of 1/2 a pint of casters and 1/2 a pint of maggots for when I took my grandson "tiddler snatching" at the weekend. I,ve just started a wormery to save a bit too.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I may well take you up on that offer Sean. Ive only managed to use my fly gear once in "anger" so to speak and Im still fairly ham fisted so I could have plenty to ask

Try Gaywoods at Kings Langley - 15-20 mins from St Albans - very good day ticket fishery
Gaywoods is good but there are more rules than you can shake a stick at. As long as you stick to them, you,re ok.
The Tring Anglers have got a lot of the Grand Union canal on day ticket, they,re website might be worth a look.

Hello to all, Ive been "lurking" for a long time and thought it was about time I took the plung and joined AN. I live in South West Hertfordshire, I got back into fishing about 3 years ago after a 30 year enforced break (family and work commitments etc). I have fished mainly canals and recently started fishing club waters in the Tring and St Albans area and have started to dabble with fly fishing without much luck so far. Jim

Hi John, I live in the Rickmansworth area, a lot of the waters around here are club waters and not many day tickets. As suggested the Verulam anglers might be a good bet, they are doing half price membership at the mo' so it might be worth having a look. Im in the Tring anglers but it may be a bit too far but we do have water sharing with the VAC and Barnet & district AS plus reduced rate day tickets on the Tring Ressies
