  1. Ben, The question that you posed is far too broad to limit to a Brand Name of fishing gear! If you are specifficly speaking of reels, then you have my vote for 90% of my Freashwater fishing is Shimano! Now if you are leaning toward Saltwater, the division is more 60,40,10% with Shimano having the smallest percentage. If you are talking rods, lines, terminal gear and comfort gear, you have many more options that are better with one brand than another. Not trying to rain on your parade, but make a bit of Clarity to the question.

  2. .ron, I have been to Norway on 2 occaisions during the months of June 04 and July 05. During each of these times we caught fish! The first time was Loven Gard, out from Rorvick about half way up the West Cost. We had fish to 40lb. and in multiple varieties: Lump, Ling, Coal, Eel, Cod, Pollack, Sea Trout and Mackeral. The majority of the larger fish were caught in Open Water out from the fjord entrences. We found numerous smaller fish within the fjords and also form shore. The second time we went up, it was out from Tromso and by ferry to the island. This area was Torvag Havaske and is very secluded. This was much deeper water in places and also had the larger fish. Again, we did not catch a great deal of fish from the area just outside of the harbor. Yet we could go just outside and catch Steinbiser, Coal fish and the Smaller Cod or two. We were able to travel to the backside of the island and beyound and found the Hailbut, Angler fish/Sea Teufel, and larger Cod and Coal fish. We had Cod to 60lb. and Coal fish to 38lb. and Hailbut to 125lb. while we were in the north. We were provided navigational charts and the Echolocator/GPS provided us with specific information that we needed. Although we had more species further south, we had larger fish in the north. I do not think that timing will be bad at all for you as other groups were on site as we arrived or departing the site. They had fish and were more than Happy that they had came. One other note, We were restricted in the amout of fish that we were able to return with! The second trip had a total of 20 kilos of fish for the max weight of 42 kilos on the return fligh. While on the trip back from Loven Gard, we had a Chartered Bus with trailer. This trip was much more PRODUCTINVE. Each person managed at least 2 shipping cases of filets and some managed 4 cases of various fish asortments. Take the Fishing equipment and clothing to stay WARM and DRY. Also take the life preservation outterwear. Although they provide one each when you rent the boat, having this equipment on in the event of an emergency is important. Hypothermeia will quickly disorient you or if knocked out you will at least have a CHANCE. JMHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. As I have used PowerPro for my Freshwater and Saltwater applications for the past 5+ years, I know that you will be HAPPY with your choice! I have the 200lb. on my Heavy saltwater reels and the 100lb. on my intermediate reels that are used for saltwater applications. I am not casting the 200lb. lines and the 100lb. lines are out to 50yds. average when required. I have the 80lb. line on Carp reels and the average cast is 80+yds. on most waters. I have the 50lb. line on my spinning reels and find that the bite indications are fantastic. If you require distance on your casts, I would reccomend the 50lb. line and maybe the 30lb. with a shockleader to absorb the initial surge during the cast. My saltwater heavy reels are baitcasters and the problem with the digging in when hung is a factor. You would be well served in any of the situations when you get hung to to use a piece of wood to pull your line and by NO MEANES pull it with the hands or the reel itself! The line will CUT YOU!!!!! The line will be less abraision resestant in the lower breakstrengths. This is physics, but using a shockleader will allow you to make the casts required and MORE! The ONE Drawback to this line is when you want to FLOAT fish with it! The characteristics of the line make it FLOAT itself. This being said, the wind and normal wave movement will play HAVOC with your float. Every piece of floating debree will catch on it as it comes by and if the line is slack, this is more of a pain than anything else! When Ledger fishing with PowerPro, the line will be a Great asset as well. This is one of the occaisions that either a HIGH rodtip or Back leading must be selected. Or you may choose to fish with a HEAVY weight and tighten the line for fewer problems with your baitrunner. With a Baitcaster, this does not become an issue as often and therefore Saltwater applications are optimal! One other factor must now be considered. NO Stretch!!!!!! This requires you to change your Habit of STRIKING into a fish! You must develope a LIFT technique that will set the hook but not pull it out of the fish's mouth. Additionally, you will need to allow your rod and reel to take more of the SURGES that a fish will make. Loosen Your Drag more than normal as the line will not GIVE. You will PLAY the fish with more CONFIDENCE as you learn to use this NEW tool. Playing a fish under the tip will work much better as the Drag will give and not pull the hook. JMHO!!!!!!

  4. I have used the Neoprene gloves with the thumb, indexfinger and middle finger flip backs. These have proven to be Very useful. I would reccomend them to anyone that is fishing or hunting for ease of use. I would think that the mitten version with the complete fold back would also be Great.

  5. Elton, If I am able to meet him, I would Happily Do SO!!!!!! As I have said earlier, most people do not have a CLUE when it comes to CARP! Budgie's reference to the Getting Arrested was a matter of FACT! The officer wanted to know what we were going to do with all this equipment under a bridge at 07:00 hours. It will still require time for the USA to adopt the open mindedness to calll CARP a Game Fish. The fact that we are Catch and Release will make things a little CRAZY. The Bow Fishermen and Women will be most effected as they do kill the fish. It is the FIRST Step and we are looking forward to WALKING Some DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JMHO!!!!!

Have a Great weekend guys and Catch some fish if you get a chance.

  8. Newt, Budgie, Andrew and Todd, You are all WELCOME to Come up again and fish with me or without as we try to depart the area. You now know of at least one area that the fish are abundant and that is not the only ONE! The Tidal Basin is a venue that simply Baffels us ALL! It may be Good one day and nothing the next, but we still keep trying. We will be there on 3 Nov. 07 for the CAG FALL FISH-IN and HOPE that they will have turned on again. The following day, we will be at Haines Point and will be Hosting the Disabled Vetrans for a day of Carp Fishing. We Hope to have a Large turnout for this first time event. This is our way of saying THANK YOU to the Military Forces for their Service to our country.

  9. OK, Enough yik-yak! Get yourselves on UP HERE!!!!!!! It is now 07:44 AM and I am at work. The Long Awaited visit will start this afternoon/evening and all are Chomping at the Bit to say the LEAST! I have been reading and watching the news/weather and we are due Rain and Thunder Showers tomorrow. Not GOOD! We will have 80 + on Friday w/showers, 73 + on Saturday w/scattered clouds and 75 + on Sunday w/mostly sunny. This will not hinder us other than the times when it is LIGHTING! We will be doing Morning and evening sessions as the plans stand. We will Hopefully be able to post some photos of the Young Men having FUN with our Nations' Capital Carp population. One way or the other, we will provide a report.

  10. I have had a pair of Neoprene for 4 years and have used them often. They are Chest high with rubber boots attached. They are WARM in the late Spring and Early Fall, but during the Winter, I am more than Happy to have them on. I will not TRUST the rubber ones as they are so easily torn or punctured. Where I fished previously, the bottom was mostly gravel and mud. The rubber boots were definitly a PLUS. JMHO!

  12. Chester, Not so in my case! I have found them to be Excelent rods for my fishing in Norway! The bend is a through and the line does not bind during a heavy fight. My largest fish has been 50lb. to this point. It still comes down to choices. JMHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. FYI!! I have 2 of the PENN Prion Inline 400-1200gr. casting weight and LOVE them. The problem of rethreading the line has not happened to me to this point. I have used Power Pro 100 & 200 lb. braid with these rods since they were purchased and have not found the top ring to be a problem. They work Very Well for Pilking or Trolling and short casts are not a problem as well. I do not normally cast my salt water baitcasters, but I would not foresee a problem doing so with these rods. Novelty, MAYBE! Functional, YES and with the added benifit of not worring about rings !!! JMHO!

  14. Newt, Not a problem as we may be trying the Tidal Basin on Saturday morning and have a lot more room. If not, we will stretch out along the river between the bridges as fish have been caught there on a continous basis. We will make up our minds as the day comes. You can give him our Cell numbers along with my house number and we will confirm on Friday. I too look forward to meeting him as well!!!!!

Thanks Hoppy. BTW - I invited Todd Purdue (Roanoak, Virginia, and knows you & the Burgesses from various forums. He lives in VA and only a couple hours away. I imagine he will join us Saturday for the day. Not sure if either of his boys will come or not.

He is looking forward to meeting all three of you in person.

Todd & I met a few years ago when we (plus spouses & his boys) were the only two who attended the first SC CAG fishin. Our host was in the hospital with a bad back but hadn't had time to let us know.

  15. Newt, Jan, Budgie & Andrew, Today it was 94F when we departed the water. This was at 14:00 hours and the humidity was at 85% as well. Petra and I had the umbrella up from 10:00 hours on. I suggest that you bring Sweaters for the mornings and possible late evening sessions. When we departed the house this morning at 06:14 hours, it was 66F and rose to 75F before 08:00 hours. I wish that I could guarantee the same for our weekend, but we will make it work one way or the other. ENJOY your time in North Carolina and we look forward to your arrival in the District of Columbia/Silver Spring, Maryland.

Newt, your arrival should be around 19:00 hours. The TRAFFIC will not change much during the afternoon one way or the other. I do suggest that you take the I495 towards Baltimore rather than the Virginia side once you get to the city. The traffic seems to move better from my prospective.

  16. Hey Gentlemen, Today was a Red Letter Day as well. I now have a New PB! The previous mark was 26lb. on my Club Lake (Haug See) in Haasfurt, Germany. This mark has stood for over 7 years and I thought that I was never going to get past it. Now, today back in the USA I have BROKEN IT!!! The New mark is 28.2lb. form the Potomac River in our Nations Capital. Yes, I am Excited and Very Happy that I could come HOME and make this New mark.

As far as the fishing goes, I hope that you will get your lines stretched before you get here, but know that there are some Very Intrested Parties awaiting you on the Potomac River!!!!!!!!

  17. This past Saturday was very Enjoyable! I will not bore you with a long story, but will say that the fish were on the feed in shifts. I was able to view both sides of the coin as they say. Yet it brings you back to the Old addige, It is Called FISHING and not Catching, but sometimes you DO!!

    Total: 3 Catfish to 14lb.

6 Carp in the net from 10-25.5lb.

    3 Lost/Hook Pull

  18. Peter, We are Very Open for the prospect of returning to Europe. As it stands, my year in the USA is over in November and we are looking! Thanks for ASKING! By the way, Budgie and Andrew will be over in October for a try at the D.C. Carping and Catfish scean. They are bringing Newt up this way as well!!! I hope that the weather will cooperate along with the fish as well. I will keep you and the forum posted.

  19. Noodles & Budgie, you have both made the point that I have stressed for as long as I have used Power Pro! Many have asked why I use the 50lb. for my Hooklinks, 80lb. for my Main Line and 100lb. for my Shock Leader. The Diameter is what I would use accordingly anyway. I have the additional strength to cope with obsticles that have been the cause of LOSS of fish and gear in the past. Does this line cost more? YES!!!! Does it last Longer for me in my applications?? YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Will I continue to use it?????? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When someone can truly show me an advantage to making a change, I will then do so. Until then, it is my line of choice for 99.9% of my fishing. JMHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

couldnt agree more but in the real world how many times do you actually ask for such a line in .50 dianmeter or instead ask for 50lb?

I tend to stick to the 50lb route knowing its diameter (through a few years of using it) will be sensible enough to cope with almost anything i come accross.

I got into braid in the mid 90's with spiderwire which was dire and relegated to free roaming baits at the same time using mono between 12-18lb.

a few years later i bought some penn braid in 20 lb with a very low diameter which was great i got more kit back than i ever did with mono from truly horrible snags, I did hit a few problems with this on waters that had snags that cut thi like cotton, to be fair the same thing did me with 20lb maxima marine green.

now a few years on i use braids around 40-50lb (no idea about the diameter tbh but it casts better than 15lb mono for a comparable diametre) and ive been back to the same swim with these and discovered the snag was a sheet of roofing tin (made a great hard spot for the baits though) 50lb penn braid did the honours of dragging that in and yes the braid did need cutting back but 20lb mono didnt cope with it

anyway to summarise yes buy a diameter similar to what you would use in mono as the properties of braid get you out of trouble 9 times out of 10 as opposed to mono

  20. Lyons, That is the way to LEARN!!!!! They others have given you sound advice and also a train of thought. You will need to apply this information and Pratice most of all. Additionally, you should note that all the fish are not 200-500 yards out!!!!!
