    The Solway flounder marks might produce this week. Fished the other side at Port Carlisle on Sunday on a really bad tide. Still got 8 fish between 3 of us. All came in 1/2 hour spurt. The bigger tides this week should make a difference. All fish came on Ragworm and were not interested in either fresh or frozen crab

     

    guys and gals,

    is anywhere in scotland fishing well just now, I'm planning a couple of days next week and need a mark to try.

    Anywhere i can put a bend in the rods will do

    Hi everyone, a couple of years ago when I started sea fishing I bought a rod & reel combo for about £40, it has served me well but I think it's about time I upgraded now. I have purchased a new reel & now I'm on the lookout for a new rod.I was recommended the shakespeare odessa f/s for its casting(tongue in cheek) and its bite detection but have had great difficulty finding one(have seen them on e-bay,but only in rod & reel deals).Could any of you gents offer any recommendations, obviously there are hundreds of them but I'm afraid the zziplex,greys etc are out of my price range, medium price range(whatever that is).thanks for reading this chaps,hope someone can help.kind regards ray (toffeeman)

     

     

     

    The rod Stan4massey loaned me a couple of weeks back was a very nice rod for beach fishing good bite detection forgiving action and looked nice too. It was a Penn Guvnor match and I think they are reasonably priced.

    Since Alan Caulfield (the MD of Penn) was killed in a car crash a few years ago it aint the same Penn. I dealt with Alan for many years but now it has been taken over by his son and he`s a bit more hard nosed than Alan.

     

    Penn does`nt need to donate it anyway as I`m donating it (possibly I worded things wrongly). If for some reason Colin has flogged it already (I pm`d him a few minutes ago) then I`m happy to have a word with Conolfex and custom build him one, may take three or four weeks but that`s christmas deliveries, cant do much about it.

    No I have not flogged it. Will have the rod over to Stan this week. A very nice match rod it is too.

    Well done mate. I managed my first Mullet this year too and like you I will be giving it some serious attention next year. What a fight. And so easy to go fishing no digging bait or crabbing just a few loafs and off you go.

    Rotten bottoms are used when fishing snaggy ground and are there to allow you a chance to retreive your trace when the lead is snagged. This is done by using a weaker link between the lead and the trace which only becomes active after the lead hits the water not during the cast.

     

     

    There are several different rotten bottom set ups and it really depends what kind of fishing you are doing as to what type you use. The simplest if you are fishing straight down a wall or rock mark is to tie your lead on to lead link using line of a lighter breaking strain than your main line. You must not cast with this set up. The second is for a gentle lob you can use an open lead link generally called a rotter (think the name came from dave dowcra tackle) this is basically a hook shape you sit your lead on for casting and again tie your lead on with weak line eg Veals RBC Rotten Bottom Clip (http://veals.co.uk/acatalog/Veals_C...e_Clips_77.html) . When the lead hits the water it pops out the link and is only attached by the weak line. Next and in my opinion the best all round are the sea mach rock release links these consist of an oval split link and a long arm and a big bead (http://www.fishingmegastore.com/aca...hes_Clips.html). The lead is tied on and fed onto the long arm then the bead is pushed over the arm. When the set up hits the water the bead floats up the line and releases the lead. the disadvantage is you have to make your rigs up in advance with these. The advantage is they allow a decent cast with confidence. The best of all are the gemini breakers (http://www.gemini-tackle.co.uk/clips2.php). Very difficult to describe but similar principle to the rock release except they are all in the one piece. They can just be added onto a lead link. they are more expensive but will cope with all casting styles.

     

     

    Also hope ia m not simplyfing thinds too much for you but at the end of your leader attact a lead link. Make up your desired trace with in most cases 60lb leader with a swivel at the top and a lead link at the bottom your trace is attached to your leader and the lead attached to your trace.

    Should be a good trip m8. Hes a very good skipper. We are out with him at the end of the month. Expect haddies and mack from them reefs then plenty of pollock poor cod pout coalies etc from the wreck if he takes you there. Conger too but leave them there for me please :D

    I first fished the pier a while ago with a lad called Davy Mcnair. I think he got the other Davy his first skate many many years ago. Anyway he has an article from an old sea angler of the two davies fishing from his boat landing skate within spitting distance of the pier i'm sure Davy will know the article.

    As for my next trip to LA it is pencilled in for a week on Saturday/Sunday in between Eggerness this week and Holidays in 2 weeks

    From Lochaline pier you dont cast the bait but cast your weight out and run the bait down a slider (suppose it will be the same tactis for any deep water mark). Its deep there i've emptied 7000's loaded to the brim before hitting the bottom. Also trying to break out a snag even with a 15lb rotten bottom there is a nightmare.

    Think I will be trying Braid on my next visit.
