  1. Hi,

I may well be interested in the Shaespeare reel and possibly the rods if okay. What sort of prices are you looking for, and have you got any better pictures? The ones on the forum are not very clear.

    Thanks!

Does anybody know where I can sell some old fishing tackle. In particular I have a pair of 10` Hardy swimfeeder rods in perfect condition. Also a shakespear closed face reel. Also have a Tag Barnes super Carp and some old lures purchased in the late 60s early 70s still in priginal packaging.

Somewhere in the essex area would be best although they could be posted.

  2. I am still lokking for fibreglass rods!

    Hi Ian,

That is indeed a good idea, and I will keep a look out. But I am interested to hear about fibreglass rods anybody would like to get rid of. I'm looking for rods by manufactureres like Shakespeare, Daiwia, Hardy, B&W, and handbuilt rods by makers like Alan Brown, Leslies of Luton. I'm even interested in unbuilt fibreglass rod blanks. I'm based in Nottingham and would be happy to collect within a reasonable distance.

  3. Nothing wrong with supermarkets selling carp or for that matter any freshwater fish. They will only sell farmed fish anyway, wild fish would be too irregular in size or too expensive forthat matter for them to make a profit on. Carp in my experience are quite tasty and very meaty, perch very good with firm flakes of fish. Best freshwater fish for eating though must be grayling.

  4. Hi,

Bread flake excellent bait to use on the rivers. Get a fresh unsliced tin loaf. Tear out from the middle a large coin shaped piece, use a hook sized between 2 and 8, put it in the middle of the flake. Firmly press the flake over the top half of the hook, leaving the point of the hook free. Yes when you retrieve your float tackle, the flake will have come off. But rest assured it will stay on your hook while you trot it through. Drennen loafer float ideal, don't be affraid to use the larger sizes, and use aaa shot in a bunch with a no.4 about 10 inches away from the hook. The loafer name comes from the fact that the float was designed to use with bread. Another tactic worth doing, is to dispense entirely with a float, and just fish the flake on a line weighted with a bunch of shot, if the chub are there, they'll soon let you know! Feel for bites with your fingers touching the line, or just watch as your rod tip gets pulled round violently.

    Have fun!

A little more info on depth of water - speed of flow etc might be useful. I use 2.5ssg loafers a lot on streamy stretches of the Kennet - sometimes going upto 4 or even 5 ssg when the flow is strong and/or the water is deeper. However although it says swanshot on the float I would never use that heavy a shot - prefering to put a number of AAA with BB or a No3 or No 4 nearest the hook. I prefer to string out the shot 'shirt button style' - others on here will prefer a bulk shot approach. When trotting its important to have the bait preceding the float - so you might even want to consider over shotting the float slightly so that only by holding back do you keep the float on the surface.

As for bread staying on - check out this new Magic Bread - great stuff - gives you lots of confidence that your bait is still on until you get a bite - a mate of mine has even 'fly fished' with it!

  5. Oh no wait and see, wait and see!

There are a lot of good cane rods in Australia, as well as no doubt a lot of rubbish mass produced ones as there are in most countries. Postage from there can be expesnive due to length restrictions. But not too bad, how do I know. Well I am a cane rod maker, and a few of my rods have made their way there.

Probably full of colonial woodworm and chewed by some weird marcupial or two!
  6. Hi,

Can anyone give me any information about fishing in the Blyth estuary near Southwold?

Is it lure fishing for bass, or bait fishing for mullet?

Are their any areas worth fishing?

    Any information appreciated.

Any help at all on any fishing around southwold?

  7. I'd very much like to join a Coarse fishing club in Nottinghamshire, has anyone got any ideas?

I'm not interested in match fishing, so that side is not important.

I very much like traditional style angling.

I don't like modern style carp fishing much, so not a club with lots of bivvies, and pellets etc.

I like small rivers best, and small wooded lakes and ponds.

Is this possible, or am I just too choosy?

    Any help appreciated.

  8. Hi Nick,

Just a suggestion, I dont know how mobile you are but try to get round your local car boot sale this weekend, theres usually loads of this type of rod on them

  10. Hi,

    Can anyone help?

I would very much like to rekindle my youth, I am after a 1970's vintage fibre glass match or float or ledger rod could be a Shakespeare, Abu, East Anglian Rod Co, Milbro or Intrepid. Doesn't matter if one or two rings needs replacing, so long as the blank, cork are intact, and the ferrules fit. Please pm me with details.

    Regards,

  11. Thanks for the information so far, it has made very interesting reading.

I grew up fishing small rivers; the river Ivel, the River Flit, Elstow brook, and the upper Ouse at first, and then the very upper reaches of the Cam in Essex for wild trout, I then moved to Nottingham, I've never really been a fan of the Trent, far too big for me. I like the Derwent, Dove and Ecclesbourne, but they're too far from me. Tried the Eye above Melton as a member of a small but now defunct syndicate, and caught superb roach to 2lb plus, chub to 6lb plus, and some nice perch. Hence my interest in small rivers around Nottingham

Can anyone else give me any more information?

  12. In the early C20th the Leen was a very productive water but ran through industrialised areas and became all but dead. It was culverted heavily in the 60s but I've always felt it had potential as a fishery if it were cleaned up.

I'd be very interested to know how you get on if you give it a try. Another tiny water that used to contain small pockets of big fish was Tottle Brook which ran from Highfields lake to the River Trent.

Just been down to the Leen outside the QMC, very clearly saw chub in excess of 4lb, very spooky though. No bankside cover, or anything. could be worth a try though. Will look further upstream at Old Basford. There are trout for sure in there, along with big chub.

Chavender, I'm sure the brook you are talking about is the Clifton brook, which flows into the Trent at the A52 flyover. There are indeed plenty of big chub in there, I once saw a shoal of 30 plus of them near to where the brook actually flows under the flyover. There are trout too, my degree thesis was based on a study of the brook, I found 5 brown trout whilst sampling.

    Thanks for the help guys!

  13. A bit further away the Devon ("Deevon") has always been good.

Most of the rivers I mention are so clean now, they support self sustaining trout populations.

The Smite becomes the Devon lower down. How do you access the Devon? Is there a club that controls any of it?

Thanks for the help so far.

  14. Hi,

I am a member of the River Erewash Foundation, but am looking to expand my horizons this summer. I'm interested in fishing the following rivers, has anyone tried already, information or advice?

    River Leen

    River Maun

    River Meden

    Bagthorpe Brook

    Clifton brook

    River Smite

    River Greet

    Hallougton Dumble

I am in the main a fly fisher (some of you may know from the fly fishing forum, but I do like to get my avon rod and pin out, or my ultra light spinning rod as well.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give me!
