  1. After trying for Pike a few times recently and failing miserably ive decided to go for other coarse species.

Ive decided to try Crofton lake which is pretty near to me so i was just wondering what coarse fishing is like at the moment and if its worth the effort? (And i know pike fishing is pretty dire, i don't need any one to tell me that1 :P)

Also if anyone has been to Crofton if they could tell me if it is any good, or recommend a better fishery?

    Cheers

  2. Hi im a local to the Kewsick area and ive heard that the river Derwent is good for trout and salmon. But ive never fished it and dont know which places to try. So can anyone tell me any decent places and where i would get a permit? Thanks.

p.s. the area around Bassenthwaite and Derwent water.

  3. Great bait for Pike Charlie. No need to defrost before use,in fact best to keep frozen as long as you can as it helps with casting. They soon defrost in the water even in Winter and Ive even had Pike pick up still frozen ones immediately after casting out!

Yeah thats what i thought but i ws just making sure.

One tip though if you don't mind me suggesting-if your going to have a go for the first time for pike (no matter how experienced you are with other fishing) then try to get some one who knows the score to tag along with and get help from.Despite their fierce looks Pike are a very delicate species. They require quite specialised handling and unhooking procedures.Easy enough to learn from an experienced piker but vital for the fish's welfare.

What area are you in might be able to sort something for you?

I live in cumbria but ive got some experienced people to go with. They fish the area that we are going to just about every weekend and have done for ages, but thanks for the offer. Just gotta hope the weather plays its part now!

  4. Ive got a load of frozen mackrel in the freezer that i use for sea fishing. So what i was wondering was if i could use them for dead baiting for pike (frozen that is) or would i have to thaw them out first?

Also, how do you find the test curve for a rod?

  5. Yeah well i doubt that they will get rid off all 6000 fish and the ones that dont go are going to get buried (im presuming alive when they fill the lake in). So i dont see why you wouldn't feel sorry for them!

  6. hello all, anyone doing any beach fishing around the cumbrian coast.am new to it and aint catching nothing!any advice on locations and rigs would be much appreciated.cheers everyone.

Port carlisle is always good for flounder. Mackrel is the best bait in my opinion. Rig shouldnt matter too much, probably a 2 or 3 hook flapper. Ive been to beckfoot twice and had no luck. But other people were catching bass. They used black lug dug up from Flimby.

This is a good website to try: http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/sea-fishing-in-cumbria.php

  7. Hi Charlie

    Skipper of Tigerlilly3 here, :D

the tigerlilly is a 38ft interceptor, (very safe boat) custom built for charter angling (ex chris cairns) she is MCA coded for 60 miles. we cover the whole of the west cumbrian coast as well as southwest scotland and the isle of man.

Cumbria has never been known as a top fishing venue with regard to charter angling though we have some excellent days out (when the weather is right) i am sure you and your family would enjoy a day out on the tiger lilly she is fully equiped and i would ensure that the day would be a good un.

    Carl

    skipper of Tigerlilly3 :)

Hello Carl. Ive been sent the price list and information etc. and as you just said, cumbria isnt a top fishing venue. I was just wondering what recent trips have been like and whats been caught (thats the 6/8 hour trips)?

  8. I think I mentioned once having worked on an emaciated fish that had somewhere in the region of a dozen trebles, various bits of wire, the odd snap-link here, the odd, slip-shot there (who knows?) and about 30 feet of tightly coiled mono in it's throat and gut. That fish went to and from the water half a dozen times and I was nearly as knackered as it was by the time I was done and eventually, it swam off. My mat looked like a scene from ER. Pure starvation and survival instinct must have driven this fish to take one more bait before it died and some weeks later, I caught it again and it had piled the weight on.

That's what all the pliers and forceps are for..... ;)

Good on ya lad! If i could give you a biscuit i would :)

  9. Hello, im fancying going out on a charter boat for fishing with my family and the closest one ive found is in Whitehaven (Tigerlilly 3). I was just wondering if anyone has been on this boat and could tell me if its any good. Cheers.

  10. Im going to Lancaster to do Physics. Ive just found out that my cousin goes pike fishing with some people who know exactly what they're doing so im gonna go with them. Ive contacted the admins about my lack of message sending ability.

  11. hope your tackle is up to the task in hand ? if not there is a link in my signature that leads to rod line & wire trace requirements. i like the whychwood power pike and power pro rods, they are quite affordable aswel.

Yeah im gonna get my self all the necessary kit and i have some which is up to the task.

    Charlie,

I live near wigton if you know where that is. Its just north of the Lake District boundry.

  12. Thankyou everybody! All your advice has made me feel alot more confident about pike fishing (mainly because i know what to do now!) Im gonna get my self kitted up with all the necessary items and try and get as much fishing in before i go to university. Ill more likely be back with more questions shortly and ill let you know how things go. Cheers.

  13. how much pike fishing have you done ?

see the signature at the bottom of this post

I havent done any purposefull pike fishing. I accidently caught one whilst spinning for trout. It was just a little 2lb-er but it was still very exiting! The rows of teeth looked daunting but i managed to get the hook out with the help of my brother. Them links were very helpfull thankyou.

if your intent on cumbria make sure you have gear suitable for the place, oh and dont forget the bait restrictions in force

i fish up there a fair bit anything you want to ask fire away

Have you been to Hawkshead (esthwaite water) before? If so, are there any tip you can give?

    Thanks all.
