[Replacing chair and rod bag (maybe?)]

I forgot something..

 

I have an umbrella (a keenets one from Argos) - only leaks a little bit but its quite heavy.

 

Can you get lighter ones? would an umbrella and its pole etc fit in a quiver type bag If I go down that route?

Hi All,

 

so not been out much this year but when I have, I have realised that I take way too much stuff and its all a bit too heavy. So I have decided to try and see if I can make my lift a little easier

 

First thing is my chair, im using my old camping chairs which fold up into a bag, but its quite heavy, its nice that it has a back, arms and a beer holder but moving it around is a bit difficult.

 

The second is my rod bag, I have one of these bags which hold 6 rods, 3 made up and 3 broken down, in that case I also carry my bank sticks, landing net and pole etc. Now I like the bag but as time is usually short, I dont always have the time (or space) to take out the rods im not using etc, so I end up lugging everything around with me!

 

So really I have a couple of questions, can anyone recomend a chair? preferably with arms but not essential, must be light weight and easy to carry.

 

The second is that I was looking at a quiver bag that has each rod in a sleeve - so I can quickly take out the ones I dont need and they are kept protected in the shed! (I dont have a garage hence the small spaces im dealing with and want to store things safely). With the quiver bags, what size do the pockets generally offer? enough to hold bank sticks etc? space for my landing net pole ? does anyone use them or can you recomend an alternative ?

[Bit of sea fishing help for someone new...]

Hi All,

 

Hope you can help - Normally a coarse fisherman but were heading down to Mortehoe, North Devon next week for a bit of a getaway. As its so near the coast, was thinking about trying a bit of sea fishing!

 

Ive got some quite heavy lure fishing gear so was wondering a couple of things:

 

Is there a peer I can fish off near the coast at that location? Were staying on a campsite (postcode EX34 7EJ) - looks like were near Broador / Lee Bay ?

 

Is it worth fishing at this time of year at those locations ? Not really sure what I would catch ?

 

I was planning to use my heavy lure gear ?

I shall be giving it a go when I have a spare evening, dont think im going to strip it all the way down, may just go as far as I feel comfortable with first! im sure most of the problem is just dirt under the spool

Were they big lures or small lures then? I do love fishing the little soft plastics, lure fishing never really interested me until I was introduced to them, there's just something 'nice' about using them

The first small pike I got was on quite a small perch looking lure

 

The next pike I caught was on a bigger one (in fact, it was a lure of a pike, very canibalistic!), the bigger lure probably wasnt that big as far as lures go but I was just suprised as the lure itself was large compared to the pike that took it (if that makes sense).

 

We also tried a few spinners but with no luck (was hoping a nice perch or chub would like it)

 

quite looking forward to getting back out there and giving it another go.

funny you should say that, there was one angler on the bank, but think he was on the quiver for chub - I did walk past another angler who looked quite like a secret squirrel (and he looked a bit miserable!)

 

so I would say yes.. we did see one

 

I was quite suprised about the size of lures that a little pike went for!

so literally take it all apart and give it a good clean, silly question, how would I know what to grease and what to keep dry (im assuming I just grease everything thats already had grease on it!)

ive noticed that one of my reels isnt as "smooth" as it used to be. Whats the best way of maintaining a reel. I feel confident about taking most things apart but I just need to know what to do, where to grease etc.

Well we both went spinning and didnt blank!

 

I got a couple and stooby got another, I will have to admit that his pike was much larger than both of mine put together but still...

 

I really enjoyed it, something nice about just wandering down the river with a small amount of equipment.

 

I really found it makes you concentrate on casting more, as the day went on I found myself more and more confident with getting closer and closer to where I ideally wanted to be!

 

There is a picture and ill try and get it sorted!

[safety of the shoal]

you can notice this behavour when you add fish to a fish tank, generally if you add multiple fish in of the same species, they will shoal together, however after a period of time when they feel comfortable, they do not shoal anymore.

 

If you then spook the tank they generally group back together again

 

obviously this doesnt happen to all fish.. but definitly gives an indication that they do it for safety.

I checked the EA site this morning about the river levels - with Perch (and I suppose Pike im after), does it help to have slightly dark water ?

I will be waiting till spring to set it up, just wanted to get prepared. Im lucky enough to have been given a pre-made wormery (with the individual trays and collector at the bottom for the liquid) - thank you for the link its an excellent read and I will be refering to it alot I think!

whilst they dont grow as big as lobs, are they still as successfull for fishing the likes of big perch etc?

 

you cant beat a bit of free bait!

Hi All,

 

I am starting up a Wormery (Mrs thinks its for the garden but I have other ideas!)

 

I have 2 options of worms available to me and im not sure which to go for (or whether to mix them!)

 

The choices are Red Tiger Worms (Eisenia Andrei) and Dendrobarna (Eisenia Hortensis).

 

I have used dendros before however not ever used or seen Tigers, by the looks of it they are smaller at around 5cm in length. I have done a little reading and noticed someone post on another website the following description of Tigers:

 

"Very active wigglers when exposed to sunlight. Worms exude coelemic fluid which smells unpleasant and are therefore not suitable for fishing bait"

 

does anyone have any experiance with using Tiger worms for fishing? im wondering if I mix the two together, will the fluid affect the dendros? (reason being is that Tigers are aparently better at keeping your wormery "running".

as im fishing with Stooby ill hijack his thread

 

with regards to line strength, what line strength would you say to use (if not using braid) to attach to the wire traces? need to get my spare spool filled and not sure what to go for.

 

The reel is a little Mitchell Avocet Silver, I have a feeling its a 2000 Rear drag, I think its rated up to 6lb line (could be wrong) - am I right in thinking you can just put bigger lines on but you lose some length?

so.. how do you actually fish off a pier or sea wall? if not using a spinner? I have been told about some bait that would be worth using but unsure whether you float fish or just fish with a tight line so you can feel a strike?

ahh never mind regarding the mackeral, how likely is it I may get a bass? whats the best way of fishing for them? lure? as I dont live anywhere near the coast, in fact, im in Milton Keynes so the furthest point away I wanted to try and use or get a rod that would be up for coarse fishing as well to get most use - if its not possible, then not to worry ill take a look ay whitby angling supplies (out of curiosity, what sort of thing am I looking for / how much we talking?)

[Whitby Pier Fishing]

Hi All,

 

First time posting in the sea fishing section of AN! im a course fisherman normally but heading to Whitby this weekend and thought I would attempt a spot of mackeral fishing off the pier, have a couple of questions if thats ok?

 

- I currently have a float rod with 4lb mainline, I was planning to fish with a single lure - would this rod be sufficient - or

- I also have a 1.75tc rod with a 12lb mainline, would this be better?

 

if I cant use those I may invest in a cheap spinning rod - if I go down this route, would any of the reels above be up to the job?

 

Will i catch anything at this time of year? whats the best way of fishing off the pier, only hoping to catch 1 or 2 fish for dinner!

 

do I need any sort of license?

Hi all,

 

sorry to hijak the thread but im in a similar situation, off to whitby this weekend. I was planning to have a look at whitby angling supplies whilst I was there as they are doing a spinning rod I was interested in fairly cheap. Whilst there i thought I may give it a go off the pier, only thing is, I dont really want to have to buy a new reel - I have a small mitchell avocet spooled with 4lb line and an abu FR103 with 12lb line ! would any of these be good enough to attach to the spinning reel and fish a single lure ?

 

I dont mind that the weight distribution or the reel maybe too big, its only going to be a few hours fun, next month ill probably buy a more suited reel to go with the rod ?

 

Also, will I actually catch anything (mackeral mainly) at this time of year? I am presuming ill need to buy a day license for sea fishing also as I only hold a course license
