Nice write up

After a taxing day on the Wharfe on the Saturday we needed a bit of an easier day on a pond somewhere. Having had a few great sessions last season we decided to give Murphy’s Ponds at Thorganby nr York a go. Now there are two ponds one is a serpentine type of lake stuffed with all sorts from Roach to F1’s although it fishes it’s head off I don’t like fishing the lake myself…I tend to opt for the pond next to the farm house…access couldn’t be any easier. Last year I had good evening catches off the top with fish into double figures with the bulk being in the 3-7lb mark every other chuck so expectations were high… On arrival we set up on the pegs around the back and could see some right subs moving across the surface it actually looked like they were still spawning. Free lining crust on the top it took no time setting up and getting in…loose fed about 6 mixers out of the bag in the area of my bate and it wasn’t long before the first telltale displacement below the bait it was only a couple of mins later and just as I was adjusting my seating that the crust, line and rod went and I was connected to the first fish of the day, Right from the off it was like a train making a B line for the willow tree on the far side but after turning the fish it made straight back at me…. Once below me at about a rod and a bits length it gave me a right run about…keeping down deep and hard, I never felt like one of the better fish but boy did it ever make an account of it’s self…. But it did give up and broke surface where I slipped the net under and it turned out to be a nice Mirror in perfect condition around the 5lb mark (I always air on the cautious side when I don’t have scales on me).
I could see and hear fish taking the mixers I had put in so quickly set about putting out another cast and chased with a few more mixers in the area… once again a bit of a boil and a slurp the line went shooting out the rod tip swung round and I lifted up it had to be on…it must be on….. But all I had was water resistance on the line and hook… unbelievable after a take like that!!!
I was soon back in and by now the fish were really hammering the mixers so the feeling was it won’t be long and sure enough I didn’t have to wait long before the next enquiry but it was not instant and there was a fair bit of playing about and what seemed cautious fish…what also made it worse was the bright sunshine that was now bearing down….eventually the crust went again and the tell tail line stripping out had me lifting into another fish. This time it felt a better fish, not as fast out the blocks but powered with weight and conviction. 3 times I bought it to right in front of me to see it power off to my right twice and a blistering surge straight out…but with a dogged runabout right in front of me again before I managed to slip my net under another nice Mirror Carp that two other anglers recon’s was a double but I would have it down as about 8lb.
With time now touching 12pm the sun was right up and the fish were right off and I mean “off” I could not buy a bite every now and then I got a boil about my bait but nothing to get excited about.
Best part of 3 hours past and I just knew we should have avoided starting when we did and leave it until evening ………… not a bite just cruising fish teasing that must have been well into double figures.
I was cooking so got up and had a walk round and a chat with another guy on the other side who also took refuse under the tree line…sat and spoke for best part of an hour about places local to fish and bits and bobs as we all do.
It was good to get out of that flipping sun I tell ya (note to self “even if fishing ready steady go style remember your flaming brolly!!!”).
Getting back in my peg and presenting another bait and a couple of free offerings see some of the fish that were finally taking the offerings I had earlier put in move onto my bait…. I had 4 fish in succession with maybe a missed strike in between…… all were in the 2-3lb mark and all relatively easy enough to bring to the net without nothing to shout about.
By now the sun was just above the wood and there was a cooler feel to the air and as you would expect the fish were really starting to show… my problem was I had lost the will to continue and wasn’t feeling good at all…my neck was cooked and I was hurting (Idiot in the sun springs to mind).
Presenting a bait again in the area of the surface feeding fish I didn’t have to wait long…the line went the heart went and up went the rod…. Right from the off I just knew I was into a better fish than I had on the past 4…. Long strong purposeful runs truing to make ever snag in the pool with a fish that gave me a right song and dance towards the end it was right in front of me going around and around on the bottom and could as hell I get it’s head up….eventually it did break surface and I was able to slip the net under what I would believe was a low double figure Mirror yet again in perfect condition….
With that I called it a day with me being un prepared for the day really and also not listening to my head about when to start I messed up what could have been a great session and who know’s could have got among the big lumps that I know are in the Murphy’s pond Thorganby.

Okay, so I got my 75-300mm zoom lens
There are 75-300 lenses and there are 75-300 lenses... It may not be the size of the lens you want to address

If Zander was my target I would be heading towards the Warwickshire Avon or Severn myself

Have you tried searching the likes of DHGate?
-
Instead of using the left mouse button to drag and drop use the right....a pop up window will ask what you want to do with the file/folder...copy,move etc

Judging by your location I assume you mean the Yorks Derwent Kevin.
Here's a link to some info on otters in our area.

John.
Cheers John
The one pool is at Kexby...its been there for years and have never had a problem until winter just gone (mind you a hard winter it was) The other is a new pool at Laytham that should have opened this season... The opening has been delayed because of the need to put in fencing and re-stocking... I have no doubt there can be many factors hence my asking on here....

I couldn`t believe the speed the Goshawk would achieve before slamming into the Pheasant ,The falconer was my mates work colleague [both MOD dog handlers] and they used a dog to flush the birds for the Goshawk .
he had a Golden Eagle that they were allowed to fly against Hares when the grass had been cut round the airfields but sadly it died about a week before we were due to go and see it fly ,It was a captive bred one i believe and she was massive .
Great shots by the way Steve.
Thanks Steve
I have been out with Eagles on hares a few times now...however its the Accipiters that give me the buzz....the rurn of speed and the explosion from the glove is awesome...... I also hunt over pointers

I love the first one Kevin!
You're lucky to get a chance like that...

Hey guys.
I was just wondering if anyone knows who now runs the shawes arms stretch of the river ribble near the church deeps stretch. I had heard it was up for sale and then that someone had got it but don't know who. I was told by my local tackle shop that warrington angling association had it but can't find any info about it anywhere or anything on their website to say the had it.
Im really wanting to go night fishing down there in the new season but don't have a clue who has it.
Any help is much appreciated.
I keep finding little bits and bobs...dont know how much use there are to you as I don't know the area
What scares you when night fishing?

Whatever you do...don't do any shrooooms before embarking on a nightfishing trip.... Back in my late teens I had a few panic moments on the bank
