Just to chuck yet another name into the hat... Korum Neoteric. Two top sections, 1.75 lb and 2.2 lb, 'normal' tops not quivers. The choice of tips give you cover for a few different situations, and differences in weight being cast. Other nice little touches, like matt finish, so no glare off the rod, and folding keeper ring.
Anecdotal recommendation...
Two seasons back my lad decided he wanted to take up fishing. He bought a load of gear, on my recommendation, including a pair of Neoterics. I took him out one Sunday evening and showed him how i fish for barbel. He went back the next day, on his own, and pulled out a fish of 11 lb 10 oz. Promptly decided that he'd 'done' fishing, and stopped going. I bought the Neoterics off of him in a flash, and love 'em.
The other bonus is they are great as 'all round' specimen rods. Use 'em for all your tench and bream work, and to a certain extent your carping as well.
Thanks.......I did look at these from the off....its just the lack of the quiver tip additions that made me shy away...... I do see your point in having something that can be used as a specimen rod also

Hi Kev, welcome back to the mad house that is Barbel fishing. Just a couple of points if I may. You say you had a rod made up, have you got the specs on it?
All I can add is the rods I really want I cannot justify the cost, so I make do with the Wychwoods, and the Shimanos, the Shimano are a lighter blank and the Wychwoods have more back bone but a bit crude, but strong.
Dont fish with the quiver anymore, apart from upstreaming so I can see better the drop backs. After all you aint gonna miss a 2 foot twitch I suppose.
More important than T.C is the ACTION, I want a progressive action, not ideal for all occasions but fine for most.
In a nutshell mate the Wychwoods are fine.
The money you save can get you a good reel, but that's another story, is it?
Hi and thanks...the old rod I had was made up by Roy and Pete at Hattons fishing tackle Hereford and was modified at least 3 times....as for where is ended as far as construction in concerned I can not remeber.. Looking around at some of the suggested rods put in this thread what is plain to see is that rod developement has come on leaps and bounds over the past 15 years.
Maybe I worded my first post wrong about now wanting to break the bank.... £150 is'nt really going to do that I-M-O but you know how it goes on these forums ask a question and you get the right hights being suggested...
As for reel? watch this space as that is going to be qustion 2

went to Chapmans the weekend for a touchy feely session on some of the recomendations...... one rod I did like was the Shimano Purist barble power........

This is a sad ol'Toad tackle tart...hehehe
I have some barbel rods
Wychwood Rogue Barbel 12' 1.5lb
Wychwood Rogue Barbel 12' 1.75lb
Drennan specialist power barbel rods 12' 1.5lb
Drennan specialist power barbel rods 12' 1.75lb
Drennan specialist power barbel rods 12' 2lb
J W Youngs Specialist Barbel Rod 12 ' 2lb
J W Youngs Ray Walton Barbel Rod 11' 1.6lb
Daiwa Infinity Advanced Barbel Rod 11' 1.75lb
Daiwa Infinity Advanced Barbel Rod 11' 2.25lb
Not counting Rods I have made myself or had built.
I like and often use the Wychwood frequently chasing Chub with it
Overall I guess the Daiwa Infinity Advanced 2.25lb is the rod I most grab when going off Barbel hunting.
I have not used the Grey's prodigy barbel 1.5lb tc rod but have heard many others praising the Drennan rods I for one cannot fault them in the pounding I have given them.
The Wychwood is a bit flexible for many but a forgiving rod when matched to the right line for a novice, however if you are going to chase Barbel guess you better spend a few extra pounds and get something slightly stronger and less flexible than the Wychwood.
I have heard of the mid price range Daiwa rods shattering in their middle section so read everyone's advice very carefully
your just spoilt

I also use a Greys Prodigy Barbel rod but I have a 1.7lb one.
as AddictedToScopex says they are really good rods without having to break the bank.
One I am giving serious thought to thanks !!!
Anyone using the Diawa Proteus or Twilight?

If you are still going barbel fishing on the Wye, Teme and Severn then I would suggest to go higher in the test curve rating like 1.75lb or even 2lb to deal with floodwater conditions
Try looking at Wychwood Barbel on ebay as well - find them a lot cheaper depending on the model
Thanks for the reply Andrew... "I wish" I moved to Yorkshir a while ago so will be proberbly on the wharfe or swale... The Wychwood barbel but read a wanted thread asking for the origonal Wychwood.... I came across a lot of the "Rouge"'s for sale.....
This is exactly the type of input I am looking for
Thanks

I use the Grey's prodigy barbel 1.5lb tc rod. Fantastic rod. Very very strong with great through action and a selection of tips from 2-4oz. I would definetly recommend one. Quite expensive from a shop but check out ebay . I got mine for a steal at £66. They usually retail around 100-120 pounds!
Thanks for that.......£120 aint going to break the bank...but great I will give ebay a ganders
Cheers

Having been out of the sport for such a long time...and how things have changed over the years I am looking for opinions on Barbel rods....My original Barbel rod I had made up for fishing the Wye,Teme and Severn at the time I wanted something with a sensitive tip but a rod with the beef to handle the job.
Now I am wanting something of quality but don't have a bottomless pocket

Hi Kevin, welcome to AN.
I had a visit to Boston Spa last year, (not fishing), I wanted to find out who had the fishing rights. Nobody I asked seemed to know!
Here's a link to some info, not sure how recent it is, but I hope it helps.

John.
Thanks John
I have looked at the site before....I have narrowed it down and what I think is my best option is to joing the Bingley club who has to stretches on there... Maybe the thing is to "Get it bought" and suck it and see.... If I do I'll let you know jhow it goes anyhow
Thanks again

Hello folks, As the user name says my name if Kev. Just getting back into course fishing after what must be a 10 year break. Bing Hereford born and bred you can understand how spoiled I have been before moving to Yorkshire 12 years ago. I will have a dabble at anything fishing wise even including fishing in the Gambia and the States.....However my passion is course fishing and species particular ....The Barbel.
Over the past 10 years Falconry has almost dominated my spare time but a recent turn of events has bought me back here.
Reason for joining the forum?.....well not being Yorkshire born and bred its hard to gain the knowledge of local waters without help....
Yes I will be filling in my profile
Many Thanks
Kev

What are they trying to install in these Kids? Loosers prosper? I understand the ethos of them being kids and that when heads go down expecialy with kids they never pick up... Surley the aim it to win and do your very best if in doing so there is a thrashing of the other team then surley this must encourage others to raise the bar?
