  1. Unwashed squid has the plus factor of a scent, where as washed squid doesn't. Cuttle also has a scent and a white belly, so you have scent and a visual attractor, you just take out the cuttle bone, or not, and leave the rest intact. I've seen those Falklands squid, they're impressive and I don't see why they shouldn't work but they're a bit softer than cuttle so susceptible to being eaten by pout and other small fish. If conger aren't exactly jumping on the hook you don't want to keep winding up from 200' to rebait every 10 minutes or so, hence the other bait, a big flappered pout, they have scent and pout don't really go for them, unless really hungry, so the ideal bait for a waiting game. Good luck because divers tell me there are loads of big congers in certain places in the North Sea.

as i said a while ago i know divers who have seen big eels on wrecks, the thing is working on a charter boat the costomers want cod ling and thats it ,i have also had tope of hartlepool .

ther are other comments on here the two fish on the stert of this thread came in just under weight i got phone call of the boat just when they were caught.also its said that ling dont go back because swim bladder is up just prick the bladder they will go back (not 100% shure if they live but they get a chance)

also down south they think we fish shads winding up we dont we hop them over the sea bed

as for the fishing its doing very well yesterday we were putting fish back up to 10 lb to live another day biggest fell to 15lb ,sea otter 11 had a trip north of whitby and had cod cod to 17 lb

as for the carbage glenk put up wot can you say

  2. Love this argument. :D First it's loads that died, thousands, hundreds, now possibly a handfull. Then it's the cold that killed or makes them unviable to live off the north east coast. Or is it the inclement climate. Now it could be that they have been washed up from somewhere else as none may have lived up there in any event. Best time for conger is during the tide run, thats when we find the real ones come out to play compared with the straps. So i suppose you could sit it out, tell me what do you actually target on the slack? We target sandwiches and cups of tea or pout. :D

Got any decent ling wrecks up there, if so you could fish for them through a full tide. Give it a try one day. :)

So it's the water tempreature then? If so do you not have wrecks in shallow water that has warmed up during the summer to try, or are you saying that the water is a lot colder, full stop.

hi barry most the big ling come from the ground at hartlepool, the wrecks fish as well ,i have had a few strap conger of the tyne,if we target them you would get them on the wrecks ,as alan says the boys have ther cod goggles on

  3. No photos of the Hartlepool fish as yet Barry, but they are genuine. They were weighed in a local tackle shop.

  5. There is some terrific sport to be had boat fishing from Hartlepool at the moment. I had a spin out with Dave Bruce on his swiftcat today and had a great morning session shad fishing for cod.

Nothing massive with the sweep winning fish of 12lb for Dave who found us a nice shoal of cod just off a wreck. We ended up with 20 stone of beautifully marked cod between 5 of us before the wind picked up and ended the day at 3.p.m.

  7. You are right carl hartlepool hasnt a chance of kicking the pants of whitby there are different types of fishing here at whitby cod .ling, haddock, pollock, shark, there as many plaice in sandend bay as you want if you sat there you would probably catch brill even turbut george on chieftain does the longer trips some people like the excitment of spending a few days at sea its completly different service but for numbers of cod what whitby can throw out iwould challenge any port in uk to beat it we have averging between 150-250 cod per trip over the last month the lads return a lot of fish just where do you get that sort of fishing within 45 miniutes of the harbour its been fishing its tits off recently on the shads i can count on one hand just how many cod have actually come of wrecks the skill is to fish sprat marks uptide tide of the wrecks sometimes 200mtrs away from the wrecks the fish are nowhere near the wrecks you dont learnt this overnight it takes years to work this job out to knows just whats what commercial fishermen know there job get them behind the wheel of charterboat and 99% of the time they are lost if i took pictures of what we have caught put up on the net it would make people sit up as to how good the fishing has been recently there is one thing in this world you get what you pay for alan did bring his cat to whitby if isnt the place to be he wouldnt have brought it here he really does love whitby ;) .
