  1. It might be worth a try if you can get to it with some chalk.

I know of a lake near here that was full of brown trout until an estate worker put some carp in.

The water is so dirty now that it's difficult to see anything. A few years ago one person caught 47 brownies in an evening fly session.

It was only fed by a small ditch but the brownies used to spaun up it on a few gravel beds.

Perhaps you could tip some chalk in as high up your stream as possible and then some gravel further down for them to spaun in.

I'm sure someone reading this will know the correct size gravel to choose.

Hope this discussion up up to Op -JB's intellectual standards.

Hopefully that's dun it Cheers Elton.

Now download a free 30 day copy of Norton AV 2002 from symantec, go back to their site and update the virus definitions and run it. Quarantine everything that it can't fix and delete the infected files if appropriate.

P.S. If you save a copy of the items in your address book in a text file or by taking screen shots, you could delete all the address book entries and then you won't be passing the virus on!!

  4. What do you mean by 'visual items'??

If you have several seperate items on a word page, try holding down the Shift key and clicking on each in turn to select them all. Then go to the drawing toolbar and find Group from the Draw menu. This will 'group' all the items together (believe it or not). With the whole group selected as one, press Ctrl+C to copy it. Open up a graphics package such as Paint from Accessories and paste the group (Ctrl+V). Save the file and you can then send it in so that we can all see what you are talking about.

  6. Has your lake got a running water source??

I was once told that if you tip a load of chalk into a stream that supplies a pond, you will create a 'chalk stream' with an eco system in which trout will grow bigger.

Does any officianado reading this have any knowledge of this practice??

  8. ColinR:

Hi - I have not fished with catmeat much yet, but I am told by some in the know that the "best" stuff to use is the Chicken in gravy of the brandname "Koshida" available from LIDL stores.

The fish in my pond are crazy about Coshida dry cat food. £1.99 for a big bag from LIDL.

Some biscuits have got a hole in that is big enough to thread a hook through, add a bit of bread dough to make it sink.

At the moment I am giving the fish in a newly dug pond, corned beef from LIDL at 39P a tin to make up for the lack of natural food. The fish are realy keen on that also. I put it in the shallows to see what happens. An hour later there is little left of a whole tinfull (in 1 lump).

  10. About 18 years ago I dug out a pond for shooting ducks and gradually made it bigger over the following years. 7 years ago we put in 4 Carp (biggest about 6 lb) and about a dozen baby Rudd.

Year later I put in just over 100 Tench.

The Carp and Rudd seemed to have spawned every year since and people have shown an interest in fishing the place. I've only ever seen 1 Tench caught (2 years ago) so I expect the birds might have done for most of them, but the biggest Carp so far was 19 lb 2 oz last year.

Just before Easter I dug out some more ponds and have gradually been transferring the smaller fish (carp under 5 lb)to them.

If anybody wants to bring the kids along and get them 'hooked' on fishing you can reckon on catching hundreds of small rudd in an afternoon.

You will probably have the place all to yourself.

If anyone wants to buy a few fish and can arrange the appropriate movement license, then give me a call.

It's just outside WEYMOUTH, not quite within casting distance of Chesil.

You can park up a caravan for a few days and there are two farms next door that will cater for them longer term.

  12. Eype is always worth a try.

Walk towards Seatown and be prepared to get cut off by the tide for a few hours (unless it's changed over the 30 years since I was last there).

The bass used to be within feet of the shore amongst the rocks (skin-diver's info).

  13. I used to have a Spindrift Bass rod by B James until I was burgled. It was rated to cast up to 3.5 oz. I don't know if they are still around. They were tied up with Bruce and Walker I think.

Used it off Chesil Beach and around most Dorset beaches with an ABU 5000C and 8-10 lb line as well as from boat. It had a nice stiff tip all right and cast a 1 oz ABU Krill a long way.

  14. The best session I have ever had was with 7 oz. ABU egons. In 75 mins two of us caught 27 Bass that averaged 7.5 lbs in the Portland Race, but that was in the good old days of '76 when the shoals of Bass blotted out the bottom on the echo sounder.

Live baiting (poorcod or smelt) is the most reliable way to catch Bass. Two of us had 84 lb of Bass (16 fish) one evening in the entrance to Portland Harbour, but then again that was over 20 years ago.
