  1. Cookus,

As Elton has mentioned it's the fishing that counts. I lived near Windsor as a yound lad (fished the Medway at Yalding once or twice as a matter of fact!) and catching Ruffe (Pope/Tommys)from the Thames was par for the course. I now live in Yorkshire and haven't seen one of the little critters for many a year. If I were to catch one on a Yorkshire river it would really make my day. Enjoy your fishing, but diversify if you can....

  2. Alan,

Just a quick Thank You for taking the time out to have a look at my Free Spirit Centerpin for me. It's certainly a dramatic improvement on the 'pre-mod' version. I was hoping to have tried it out in 'anger' but this hasn't been possible, I can't get out this weekend either.... :(

    Cheers

  3. I can see where FishinMad2001 is coming from. As a kid living in Germany twenty odd years ago catching 2lb plus Roach was not unusual and in my innocence not really appreciated.

I recall reading the AT and AM where idolised fisherman from England described the Roach as their favourite fish and wondering 'why?'.

Nowadays I can't catch a Roach of any size for love nor money in my local W.Yorks rivers so when I did go out of my way to catch one on a Lake this year (Knotford Lagoon near Otley) and caught a fin perfect near half pounder it gave me enormous satisfaction.....A very special species...I can appreciate that now.

  4. Heyup Tyke,

Got my facts wrong. The Aysgarth stretch of the Ure is memebers only. However, there are other stretches available on day ticket at Worton Bridge, Langthorpe, Roecliffe Top. Plus various stretches of the Wharfe. I suggest you talk to Arthur Padget (Bradford City AA fly section Sec.) about the best Grayling waters. He's a helpful chap who'll put you right(01274 617419).

If you fancy the Addingham waters (Below the Bolton Abbey stretches) then I suggest getting a Bradford No. 1 day ticket as the fishing on the left hand bank is easier...not steep and easier casting. Both clubs state that fishing is by Worm only if after Grayling outside of the Spotty season.

  5. Tyke,

I'll have to double check on my facts but can't get to my yearbook at the moment I'll find out for sure tomorrow and post.

I'm fairly sure that the Bfd City Aysgarth stretch is available on day ticket to non-members. It is a catch and release water though and has been since the start of this season.

The Bradford City stretch between Broughton and Gargrave is members only and you also require a day permit (free on application to the fly section secretary, the number of rods are limited so that it doesn't become crowded). If you don't live too far away I would say it is well worth joining City. There is a joining fee of approx.30 quid and year membership for about the same, can't remember the exact figures. P.S. there is also cracking water available in the upper Wharfe at Buckden and the like.....bit too dificult for me though.....but nice to wander along..!!

Bradford No.1 has pretty much all day ticket availability on the Wharfe. Try http://www.bradfordno1.com

Great waters....if only for the scenery...but even I can catch the occasional fish here.....!!!

  6. Phone,

Our native species is Thymallus thymallus, apparently named after the herb Thyme after which it is supposed to smell, or some say it smells of Cucumber. I've never noticed those aromas on any I've 'sniffed' probably because mostly they've been caught at sub-zero temps and the old hooter wasn't very discriminating, but a wonderful adversary it definately is.

  7. Bradford City AA have the rights to some fantastic Grayling fishing, in particular, on the River Ure at Aysgarth (very scenic) and on the River Aire between Broughton and Gargrave.

Bradford No. 1 AA as well as City also have good waters on the Wharfe downstream of the fantastic Bolton Abbey water at Addingham and below at very, very reasonable rates.

  8. Pikemaster39,

Let me get this right. Are you saying you use front and back alarms? Interesting theory that, up until now my PS's, when properly set up with open bail arm, have been used with full confidence for sensitivity/drop back indications but maybe my MMX's will have a use over the Winter after all.

    Cheers for that.

  9. No problem Peter, don't mind me. Maybe I misinterpreted the original post but I read it as though it was not on to fish for Pike in the Summer although I guess he was trying to say no to deadbaits. Now I thought that Summer spinning was one of the fastest growth areas in the sport. I, for one, thoroughly enjoy a couple of hours with a lure rod after work on those balmy evenings. BTW did we ever get to the low oxygen level state? We didn't seem to get much of a hot Summer around here with lashings of rain oxygenating the waters nicely.

    Tight lines.
