  1. I had a nice trout from Farmoor when I last fished there with Anderoo, and after a really strong fight was absolutely gutted to see it coming in sideways with my fly in its fin. But when we got it in the net, we saw that it had been fairly hooked in the mouth on one of the droppers and had subsequently hooked itself up on another of them. So I'm counting that one! :D

How about a lure caught pike with one of the trebles in its mouth and the other in its flank does happen with small pike and big lure!!!

i still claim it i chose the day, time, location, lure so in my eyes it was caught fair and square.

  2. Hey all

To put simple, on Friday i went fishing, in rain ( yes im bit mad) I spent one and half there ( Got to wet after that) and during that time i had caught 3 nice roach and two small common carp just using straight waggler float, four pound line, size 14 hook ( My smallest) and sweetcorn. I just wondering, whats the smallest and/or biggest hook youd use would be for catchign roach and carp. In this pond they can go upto 10 pounds.

Just me being curious because some people have said they have used size 20 hooks, others have mentioned size 10 ( Which personally i think is too big for roach) I would just like your opinions.

Hi, it all depends on the size of the bait you are using if you are targeting roach for example try smaller hook like a 24 with let’s say a single maggot, and if you’re getting plagued with lots of small fish then change your hook size (18) and possibly 2 maggots for bigger roach.

Again if you are targeting carp I’d defiantly step hook size up a lot

    Which carp hook size?

Here is a quick breakdown of hook sizes to use with particular baits. This is for general information and just a rough guide as different manufactories have their own idea of what a certain size should be. This list though will be a good starting point.

    Hook size 12

Bread flake, paste, meat, sweetcorn, cocktails, chum mixer (floater fishing),

    meat, mini boilie, peanut, tigernut.

    Hook size 10

Paste, meat, bread crust, chum mixer, double sweetcorn, meat, maize, chum mixer, 10mm boilies, tiger nut

    Hook size 8

Lobworm, paste, bread crust, 21mm pellet, meat, triple sweetcorn, 11mm boilies, 14mm boilies, 2 x chum mixer, maize, tiger nut, 14mm pellet

    Hook size 6

Whole lobworm, paste, bread crust, meat, 16mm boilies - 19mm boilies, 21mm pellet.

    Hook size 4

Whole lobworm, paste, bread crust, Meat, 20mm+ pellets, 20mm+ boilies.

In more recent times we have been spoilt by the likes of ESP who have released excellent hooks.

They where also the 1st to release hooks in non traditional sizes. These being odd sizes such as 5 and 7's.

Many carp anglers do not like using hooks above size 4, fearing that larger sizes can damage a carp's mouth and there may be some truth in this. For most general bottom bait fishing situations a size 5 ESP Raptor may be all you will ever need. A wider gape pattern would be a better option for pop-up fishing. It is important to take a realistic look at your presentation and try to imagine it on the lake bed or even better still just drop your rig in a clear margin to see if the presentation is subtle.

Carp are not stupid and presenting them with a rig that looks un-balanced will effect your chances of a pick up. An example of an unbalanced rig could be for instance, using a size 4 hook with a grain of sweetcorn.

I know this is a unrealistic example but I have used this analogy to emphasize the point. One last point, never try to save hooks and re-use them time after time.

Of course re-using them is fine if they are in good condition and most importantly that the point is sharp.

Today's chemically sharpened hooks will always be at their best straight out of the packet. You will never be able to sharpen the hook back to its mint condition. Always check the hook point after each and every cast.

  3. A 303 for Elephants, It would be useless. Have you never seen an elephant gun ?

A 303 isn't at all overkill for UK deer, have you ever shot a Stag ? People use 243's /30 06's etc for foxes.

Barrett 50cal/ GPMG 7,62 with a belt of 200 would be my choice (my guns are bigger than your lol)

  4. What i really mean is our rivers up here , only have trout & salmon & grayling in them

the point is you Know what your going to catch up here

however you boys can catch a list of different species , You never know what you might catch

Take barbel , You have them in your rivers , But not here

also i would love to spend a day at my local river

    just catching perch or chub

    Think i need to move

    Before they do something mad

    & make scotland independant

    :D

Yes i understand what your saying its the same for us in cumbria if you fish the river you know what your gonna get salmon, trout, eels thats it.

  5. Danny, in the more heavily populated parts of the country they seem to be wary of telling of anywhere good fish come from for fear of those places becoming overfished.

Have you tried Windermere? 10 1/2 miles to go at, you just have to be prepared to dodge the ship like cruisers and the fleets of smaller tourist craft.

Yes i,ve tried windermere several times with some success your right about the amount of boats on there !! am thinking of trying it soon with the downriggers !

  6. Chew would be a good option if you can get a ticket ive tried for the past couple of trials and no tickits yet some guys I no get five days in a row. Try targeting your local rivers I expermented with a new section of river since october seen no other anglers and had one twenty one just under and adout twenty differnt doubles so might be worth targeting your local river.

i have never caught pike in a river and would like to try it, the main reason for this is there are no pike in my local rivers but if anyone knows of any good rivers for up north i,d be glad of the help !

  7. I kept perch in a fish tank i had repaired in the garage. i caught them with a landing net while fishing and took them home to show my small children they lived there for a year until i had to release them due to there greedyness for all my worms lol.

The tank wasnt heated at all but had a good supply of cover and light and they seemed to grow really quickly

  8. We are not in the war FFS. Camoflage isn't worn by anglers to sneak up on the enemy it's just to fit in with the flora and fauna. Who gives a toss what soldiers (proper soldiers) get up to ? This is a fishing forum not a HM forces forum !

Need i say more you better tell these guys there not doing it right because they dont look like a tree lol

  9. So how much night fishing/sleeping have you done Danny?

What has the military or creeping up to some poor sleeping sod have to do with it? A very strange post!

Well read it! If people think they can be still fully aware of their surrounding after a snooze or light sleep I don’t care who you are your talking ****.

Would you like to be the first one to prove me wrong (am sure you would) give me a shout next time you’re going night fishing and we’ll see how alert you are in your light sleep!

It is a statement explaining to all thoughts who think they can sleep lightly while fishing may not be so fully aware of their surrounding as they might like to think

  10. All,

    A couple points.

First, how do you know who's gizzmo is setting up the racket at night?

    Emma,

Second, how do you know the carp dies? I used to run 700 hook commercial long lines for rough fish. Sometimes carp would be hooked for 48 hours. Never brought in a dead one - EVER!. My license was 50 thousand tons a year.

    Phone

sometimes carp would be caught ! how many times is sometimes and you never brought in a dead one mmmmm

  11. When I found sentries with their eyes closed, who were breathing heavily and who failed to respond to the spoken word at ordinary takling volume then they were deemed to be asleep. On operations this meant 28 days detention, on excercise a bo llocking would usually be the outcome. In the early 80s I was part of military research into reaction and response times for service people who were 'crashed out' that is awoken from sleep and asked to perform a range of tasks, subject would be woken after different lengths of time asleep, ranging from minutes to hours and after different levels of prior sleep depravation (so covering your 'common knowedge' different stages of sleep), significantly the subjects of the research were young and fit people who untimately knew that they were being tested, yet over and over the 'I thought I was just napping' people were shown to be not as awake as they thought they were. Now when fishing that delusion may not be all that important, but we were looking at potential life and death situations. Those people may have thought they knew their own bodies too.

You started with "Emma what you have to realisis that those are all simply your opinions.e " wtll of course I know that, but equally the views of others are just their opinions as is the case in any discussion without outside evidence. so it ranges from patronising to stateing the obvious to type that.

I totally agree, also coming from a military background I have heard all the excuses “I was just resting my eyes” “I just dozed off” and there all ****s sleeping while fishing has no place in fishing as it doesn’t in the military.

I’ve seen soldiers on operations in the Middle East (that were not suffering from sleep deprivation), in live ambushes (that am sure thought they knew their own bodies) fall asleep so don’t come that nonsense, if your fishing you’re awake.

I,d likes to set them so called light sleepers a challenge!! let them set put and fish as normal into the night at some point in the night Ill approach them and see how close I can get before they wake !! Am sure I’d see the same startled look on their face I’ve seen a hundred times before followed by I wasn’t asleep lol

  12. On a club water?

You are one of the people Emma is talking about assuming all anglers are alike, I have not and never intend to fish a “club “water the mere saying of it makes me cringe I couldn’t think of anything worse. Don’t get me wrong if I was approached while fishing I would happly talk away about fishing the weather general chit chat but I keep myself to myself when fishing the less people I see the better.

It would be a good idea to provide training if people asked for it, but it would be fighting a losing battle trying to make this mandatory.

  13. -- I used to keep fish in an aquarium.

I've also noticed that when a pike strikes at a lure from an ambush point, and either comes off and fails to hook up, they will go for it again on the next cast, and the next, and the nex, then go into sulk mode and refuse to be taken in again.

Yes I have noticed this on several occasions, especially using surface lures very rarely do pike take the surface lure I’ve seen them thrash and attack them half a dozen times before becoming hooked that in itself sums up fishing for me, and not for the faint hearted !!!

  14. Emma have the big lakes seem the massive increase in Perch sizes that the rest of the country seems to have done in recent years as well then?

You could be on to something there as the perch fishing on my local water has over the last couple of years seemed to have produced bigger fish, but again in the winter seem to disappear!!

  15. The coarse fishing section covers a whole range of techniques for a whole range of species, that's fair enough. The fly section if just that, it doesnt cover 'game fishing' widely. The ferox (and other big trout) talk is out of place in the coarse section, so is any spinning or bait fishing for game fish.

The 3 types Game sea and coarse, have worked well for decades in 100s of books papers and magazines.

  16. Well the rules for live/dead baits mention fish only....we could think about using ducks, hegehogs, kittens and puppies. I have seriously considered tryin' a popped up rat, even if it's just to wind up the park wardens.

i know someone that used a dead frog with air injected into it and used it as a surface lure !

  17. I don't believe a fish has a long memory or a conscience?. They on pressured waters may prefer one bait to another but it does not associate one from being caught.

None of us will ever know for sure what a fish can and can’t remember they live on instinct alone.

I remember seeing shoal of perch feeding on hatching insects, but as I dangled a worm in front of them they chose to ignore it now that might be seen as stupid as that worm would have been the equivalent of eating thousands of the insects but their own instinct told them to eat while they are there.

Also even though I have the luck of living in the lake district we don’t have the ability of being able to use any other baits than sea dead baits so if are pike get used to them then we are screwed !!

  18. BUDGIE,

It pains me enough to read about "smart carp". I've bashed my head soft saying they are just "stupid fish". NOW, I see pike are, or can, be just as smart as carp. PLEEEEZE!!! Next someone will be saying the master race stems from trout.

    Phone

    [/quo

What is considered smart when talking about fish, am sure fish don’t have train of thought as mammals but let’s face it pike are one of the oldest freshwater fish that still lives today so they are doing something right !
