Well done on the pb, I'm hoping to have a few sessions after pike this winter
-
I haven't posted for a while, but here's my latest post on something a little different, see how we got on fishing for mullet at Seaton
http://againstmenandfish.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/return-to-seaton-part-2-3rd-august-2013.html

Yes mate it is on there http://againstmenandfish.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/gillhams-resort-thailand-14th-to-27th.html
But in summary, it was another great trip although the fishing was a little slower than previous years, we still managed some stunning fish with seven fish over 100lb between me and my mate Scotty. Biggest fish of the trip went to Scott with a 360lb arapaima, my biggest was 240lb and we also caught Mekong Catfish, Amazon Redtails and Siamese Carp.

Ill have to try again next year now

What ever floats your boat, but does seem odd to pay all that money to fish a water with very rare fish and other super sized ones and then target a run of the mile species. It would be the last species that I would be after.
I'll be fishing for the other species too, would just like to add pacu to my species list

We fish in the harbour where there are some good mullet, pop into the tackle shop there and he'll put you right

Compared to most Thai fisheries, Gillhams do not stock a lot of Pacu. That is the most likely reason for not catching them, they are easy at most fisheries even a pain. Ask Stuart or Sean and they should put you right, Gillhams is the only fishery I have visited in Thailand that I have not caught Pacu at, I think it is most likely fishery policy to keep numbers low as it is a big fish and rare exotic water. Along with striped catfish, Pacu's are one of the most common species in commercials. Best way to catch one is fish someplace else, most anglers paying Gillhams prices do not want Pacu, there are cheaper and more prolific waters to catch them in.
cheers mate, I have seen a few caught but I think you're right that there's not a huge head in the lake, still going to try my best though

Chunk of fish on a hook, they seem to like fish/meat baits in Thai Commercial Fisheries.
My partner caught one at Gillhams on a banana.
I've tried fish, I'm taking some banana boilies this time too

redtail,
Tag along with Jeremy Wade.

I would but I don't think he's there this time

I fly out to the wonderful Gillhams Resort in Thailand on Monday and on my wish list is a pacu, any tips on how to catch one?
-
nice interview, I had the pleasure of meeting Jeremy at Gillhams in Thailand and he was a thoroughly nice bloke

I've owned many reels but I'll always fondly remember my Mitchell Match

Barbel will definitely be my main target this year, beating my p.b would be nice but I will be happy just to get out and catch a few! But a few sessions will definitely be dedicated to a certain weirpool and stream that hold some very large fish.
I also want to catch a barbel trotting on the 'pin and try rolling meat through shallower sections.
My main aim though due to limited bank time through work and family commitments is not to get sucked into sitting behind rods on alarms, I want to get out and actually fish not cast and wait!
Barbel will be on my hitlist this year as my pb is a lowly 6lb 11oz
-
I'd like to change my targets. My target for this year is simply to get to go fishing on a warm sunny day !
Mat
I'll second that, this weather is depressing

I'm at a bit of a loss to be honest. I've massively enjoyed my lure fishing over Winter (see blog), but when the pike and perch have spawned it will loose it's appeal somewhat.
I'll divide mine into seasonal targets.
I think Spring (if it ever arrives) will be spent chasing a double figure tench. Unfortunately, the likelihood is that I'll either catch a carp or see a few showing and end up focusing all my attention on them again.
Summer I'd like to have a go for a double figure barbel. I spent a few years targeting them but got stuck on 9lb 8oz. I still remember the moment I struck my bait out of a 14+'s mouth like it was yesterday . I'm sure I'll have a little go for the carp as well.. a certain upper 40 has eluded me for the past 5 years and it's always at the back of my mind. . That one can't go on too much longer so it's now or never really.
Autumn will probably see the start of a conceited effort for a 4lb perch. I'd like one of them more than anything.
And Winter I think will be spent after a 6+ chub and a 20+ pike, in amongst some more perching.
I do like a challenge .
have you got a link to your blog, would love to read it?

my best carp is 27lb I have had quite a few over 25lb so hope for the 30lb this year - My best perch is 2lb 15oz - and tench 6lb 8oz - fingers crossed to beat one of these this year I would also like to catch a decent size catfish having had my first one while carp fishing 2 years ago at 10lb (a kitten) also a double figure bream would be nice as 7lb 8oz is my best.
yes a 30lb carp would be nice, my best perch is 2lb 5oz and would love to top that, I fished the Ebro a few years back and my best cat was a lowly 35lb

catch lots of big fish
lol, me too

To stop being a wuss and learn how to handle pike properly. I'm missing out on a lot of potentially good fishing because I'm not confident enough to deal with one.
A bit more thought into my early season 'barbel on the float' activities. Managed it just twice last season and it should have been better than that given the venues I have access to.
Nothing else springs to mind.
good luck mate, let us know how you get on
-
If you have chub around your area then have a go for them, the hit the lure like a steam train and the first things you know about the bite if the rod arching over and the line steaming off the reel! Very exciting fishing :-)
there's a club stillwater that has chub in so if it ever warms up I'll give it a go
-
A 30lb carp / 3lb perch / 8lb Tench - one of these would be great If I get all 3 i will be well chuffed
yes, that would be a great hat-trick, I came close to a 30lb carp with one of 28lb 4oz in a match on feeder gear!
-
Barbel on the fly rod - I would have done it last year if it wasn't such a washout.
That and add a few fish to my species list. Looking at it over the last few years speaks volumes about angling methods and venues that I've been neglecting.
hope you get that barbel on a fly, let us know if you do, I love catching new species, I get a real buzz from it
