  1. Sorry

    Aim left???

    C.

Tried that, just seems to pull to the right!

What sort of gear and distances are you casting?

Nash Entity Rods, 2 x Shimano 6000 reels, reasonable equipment, or so I thought

Next time try thinking about aiming with your fist (the one holding the rod) not the rod tip, if that makes sense ?

Brilliant, thank you, I'll try that

    b,

are you casting overhead? Line is no more than 1/3rd length of rod - rod goes back to about 10 o'clock - stop - square shoulders - step toward target with cast - do NOT loop rod for extra distance. You could be releasing the line to early in the cast with your finger. Are you getting a lot of "high" casts?

    Phone

Yes to most of that, I don't think I step into it and I'm not sure I get my shoulders square, my casts do seem a little high if anything, I'll try addressing those points, see what happens, thank you

With the exeption of fly fishing; all accurate casting relies on you looking direcly at the target at the point of release, your shoulders to be square at point of release and the butt of the rod controlled with your left hand ( if right handed) so it is in line with a point between your belly button and the center of your chest at point of release.
For general casting the power comes from the arm holding rod near reel with a pushing motion compressing the rod blank.
For casting big leads, spods, big feeders or distance casting the butt hand can generate extra power with a pulling motion combined with the pushing motion of the other hand, the pulling hand is pulled sharply into a point along the center of your body.
I do some beach casting and use an ' Off the ground cast'. This involves body rotation, a transfer of body weight between legs, a javilin type push with the right arm and trying to break my ribs with the left as it pulls back to the center of my rib cage, the cast always goes in the same direction as my line of sight at point of release.
At point of release my shoulders will also be as square on as possible (hard to acheive with feet sinking in sand/shingle, waves rushing at you and a 6 to 8 ounce lead and a rig with big sharp barbed hooks flying past you).

Again, that's brilliant, all taken on board, I'll analyze my casts next time I go fishing, thank you

Forgot to mention - (if right handed) casts going right normally mean you are releasing line to early and casts going left to late.

I think it sounds like this is the issue, thanks

  2. Hi, took up fishing last summer, sorry I meant last monsoon season, got myself well and truly obsessed with it now, so thought I should join somewhere I can get hints/tips/help on stuff, so here I am :-)
