Very short notice I know, but I'll be at Grafham tomorrow, it would be good to meet up either there or Rutland at some point! Fishing for the noble zander though, not the pike. Might be at Rutland next weekend, not 100% sure yet...
Would have loved too, but this weekend family calls.
I'm strongly considering Grafham or Rutland next Saturday.
-
Grafham and pike is not an easy combination, and location is perhaps more essential than most waters I've fished.
-
It is really only the potential record for the 8Ib line class they are talking about and nothing to do witH an overall record.
Although I'm certain many UK matchmen have landed similar sized pike on much lighter lines. Anyone remember the AN Lower Itchen Grayling fish-in some years back where my wife hooked, and I landed, a pike topping 17Ib on Drennan 3.6Ib Floatfish line and a no 16 hook.

Vidar,
I know there must be some subtle, or maybe even overt, differences between one rig for vertical jigging and one rigged for dropshotting. How would you describe those differences?
Phone
When vertical jigging for zander I tend to move the jig from the bottom and no more than 2 feet off, if that. With the dropshot rig the distance from the bottom is sort of set and if you use of stand-out hook there is very little need for any additional movement other than the boats drift speed, and all I do is to give it a wiggle from time to time.
However, when I fish a dropshot rig for perch I tend to fish it a lot more actively.

Nice one Vidar. Jigging or drop-shotting, or both? I'm there again on Sunday, looking forward to it. Was at Rutland last weekend, lots more zander but smaller, great fun though.
I tend to carry two rods, one for vertical jigging and one rigged for dropshotting.
Yes, Rutland has been fishing its head off this autumn, but as you say the average size is much smaller than Grafham. I was going to fish Sunday too, but three days on Grafham in freezing cold and windy conditions knocked the stuffing out of me so I had to cancel. I am however going back a few more times before it closes so if you fancy coming with me for a day out on the water let me know??
-
Had another couple of sessions on Grafham last week and managed a handful od Zed's up to 9.5Ib.
By the way, I have been using dropshotting techniques for a very long time, and it is for certain anything but crude :)
-
I no longer bother with a stinger on smaller lures to say about 3-3.5" or when casting from the bank as it is normally far to much hassle with snags and/or weed. I have experimented many times, but for me the tiny increase in hookups, if any at all, doesn't justify the hassle.
However, when vertical jigging for zander from a boat I always use a stinger.

Good to see you back mate, with some nice preds as well!
Thanks :)

I'd agree with that. We managed 3 between us both days we were out, biggest about 8.08, mainly because the guy I was with knows what he's doing! With the wind up the best we could do was use heavy jig heads and cast into the wind, jigging back towards us as the wind moved us forward. Hard work, and presentation suffers.
Other reservoirs apparently hold bigger numbers of smaller zeds. I had an invitation to fish one this weekend but something got in the way, so I had to decline, unfortunately. Instead I'll be doing something similar on a smaller scale for river perch, which is just as exciting
As always the biggest problem is to find the fish on such a huge place as Grafham, nevermind catching them :)
Rutland has a good head of smaller zander, but again just finding them

Fantastic!
It's such an exciting style of fishing isn't it... jig up... flutter down... jig up... flutter down... DONK! Wahaay!
Yes, it is :D
Although, I would recommend somwhere other than Grafham if you want to try it out for the first time as it is a very difficult nut to crack.
-
Well for 3 or 4 minutes at around 0730 this morning I thought I'd cracked it - or at least was connected to one! And indeed it was over 4lb but instead of having stripes and a spiky dorsal it had a crimson eye, olive flanks and a yellow belly - I'm ashamed to say I've never been so disappointed to catch a tench! Session on the K&A did go on to be somewhat awesome however - with a dozen fish over 2lb, 5 of which were over 3lb (!) the biggest of which equalled my 2 year old PB of 3lb 14oz! First time I've ever done 5, 3's in a single session!
3-14 below (more pics on blog )

Now that is well done

Wow, nice one! That's a mighty zander!
Yes, very happy with that one as it my biggest UK zander, but still a bit to go before I beat my PB of 16.5Ib that was was caught in Norway 15-16 years ago :D

Grafham? If so I was there a few weeks ago vertical jigging, and we had the same problems, the wind really was a killer. Boat control goes out of the window and getting the jigs to behave properly was very hard. As you say though, very nice consolation prizes!
I had the same problems with wind (excuse me ) last weekend jigging for perch from the bank on a river. With the light jig heads and light braid, it's a nightmare. Add any more weight, and the lures don't behave properly.
Thankfully this weekend looks a lot better.
How have you got on there in the past, or was that your first visit?
Yup, it was Grafham, and you are spot on that the wind makes boat control next to impossible, especially now when bringing your own electric trolling motor is banned due to some numpty short-circuiting his battery terminals and causing a small fire on the boat . Even with a drogue the drift is much too fast rendering correct presentation of the jig very difficult indeed.
I’ve only been to Grafham once this year, where as I say the wind made vertical jigging impossible, but the last two trips of the previous season brought me an 8.5, 10.5 and a 14.13Ib zander plus a cracking perch just a shade under 3Ib.
-
Nice one Vidar That wind looks a bit awkward!
Good spot
Yes, the wind was very awkward indeed and I had to give up vertical jigging for the zander as it was more like slow trolling, but whith a consolation prize like that I'm happy.

Life has an awful tendency to be very busy indeed and I haven't had time to post much on the forum the last few years, but I'm still very much "in love" with angling and consequently try to get out whenever I can.
Here are two nice pike I caught just a couple of weeks ago :D

Let me extend my warm thanks to Tony and Sue for organizing the event, and not to forget Lyn and her fantastic bacon sandwiches
It was great to see so many familiar faces again. It was a pity that the main river was more or less impossible to fish. Oh well, at least I ended up with a half decent grayling and a dozen or so of the unavoidable trout.
As long as many fisheries on Itchen and Test allow winter coarse fishing you will catch out of season trout. It is simply unavoidable and the fishery owners/managers are perfectly aware of this. If they want to avoid these by-catches all together they simply have to close the rivers , but I strongly suspect they won't as they are too dependant on the extra income.

I’m looking forward to see you all on Sunday
-
To be honest I'm really looking forward to it already. Plus I now have a proper waterproof one-piece suit, so I should be protected against the traditional Timsbury weather! Are you taking your fly rod again this year Steve? I might chuck mine in the car just in case, but I think it'll be a day of trotting for me.
Has anyone used corn to good effect there? I haven't tried it at the Test, but I did very well with it on the Itchen.
I have used corn a few times and caught very well on it (both grayling and trout) indeed

Tony,
Please, can you put me +1 down
I have also sent you a PM

Here is the opportunity to buy some quality reels and rods to a great price before they go up on eBay
Daiwa Millionaire CV-Z 253LA reel
I have never used Daiwa Millionaire CV-Z 263LA (left hand wind), filled with 80Ib Power pro, for sale. This is one of my spare reels and besides filling it with braid, and a couple of casts to make sure it were in fully working order, the reel has never been used.
The Daiwa Millionaire CV-Z 263LA is the predecessor to the current Daiwa Luna and are simply one of the best, and most solid round baitcasting reels ever made. The CV-Z has almost identical specifications to the Luna with the main exceptions being a different handle design and the CV-Z’s internal adjustment of the magnetic braking system.
I’m looking for £105, including shipping to anywhere on the UK mainland.
ABU 6500 Syncro reel
I have for sale one of my spare ABU reels, a 6500 Syncro (right hand wind), which again has never been used.
I’m looking for £55, including shipping to anywhere on the UK mainland.
Young John Wilson Heritage centre pin reel
This reel has been used, but is extremely well cared for and consequently in excellent condition.
I’m looking for £125, including shipping to anywhere on the UK mainland.
TFG The Brawler baitcasting rod
This is a virtually unused (only used 1 time) 7 feet / 2-piece construction rod that is rated for casting weights between 40 – 100 grams. Being a 2-piece rod I purchased the rod for travel/easy transport purposes, but as it has only been used once it does not make sense to keep it.
I’m looking for £35, including shipping to anywhere on the UK mainland.
Cheers

Unfortunately, I had to pass on Timsbury due to the fact I have to commission the building management system on one of our projects this weekend. It's really, really not what I wanted, but I have no choice in the matter as the project must be up and running by Monday
I have a room booked and paid for at the Winchester Sutton Scotney Travel Lodge from Saturday to Sunday and if any of you fancy having that free of charge they are very welcome. Shoot me an pm if you are interested and I'll give you the details.
Cheers

Hi,
I'm looking for a spinning rod with a bit of poke, a stiffish butt section but still very light, casting up to maybe 40g max. It's mainly to be used for a bit of burn trout fishing, pike spinning with plugs and boat pollacking with 1oz leadheads. I had a good look about the GAC and there were a fair few roads there, but I'm loathe to spend my cash in that place as their customer service still hasn't bucked up (I asked about a new tip section for a rod I bought off them previously and the reply was "we've never stocked that model so we can't help"!).
Has anyone got a spinning rod with a nice stiffish lower section and (maybe) cork handfle that they simply wouldn't part with?
Cheers
Dan
Savagear Bushwhacker 8.6 feet / 15-40 grams casting weight
These rods are incredible value for money and have just the right action for modern lure fishing.

I have always thought that it is a bit of a fallacy that lures don't work in the winter. They do work, and can work well, especially during high weather fronts. A really deep diving plug, with a large diving vane, can be tripped along the bottom, the vane digging into the silt, can yield no end of pike. Mind you, it does help if you understand the likely whereabouts of pike!
Spot on, Peter
There are some very good pike anglers in this country that aren't fishing anything but lures all year long and they are able to catch even in the depth of winter.
I agree in the fact that slow and deep most of the times seems to do the trick during winter, and personally I have been doing very well on 4-6 inch jigs twitched back along the bottom.
Saying that I saw numerous pike, up to high teens, caught on a top-water lure last year in mid November so no rules without exception it seems.
Mission accomplished
