I am fairly new to angling (2 yrs) but have fished at Creeting lakes where the fish are small and also more recently Melton Lakes where I believe there are some large carp, although I am happy to catch anything ! I am also considering fishing at the match lake at Suffolk waterpark. Had one trip to Rectory Farm at Hingham in Norfolk which was a good fish for me with half a dozen carp of 4-6lb in a 4 hour session

I would stay away from an out and out carp rod, you really don't need that power if you are going after match carp. Try looking at a twin top avon/quiver rod of about 1.25-1.5 lb test curve, then you can use the avon top to float fishing as well as leger. I have had 9lb carp out quite easily with a similar rod. You can also use the quivertip for feeder fishing for roach, bream and tench. It is an altogether more versatile rod for an all-round angler than a carp rod.

If you want to leger I would step up your reel size to a 4000, although the exage 2500 is a lovely float reel it will soon show its lack of power if you are throwing large weights around/targetting bigger fish. Both shimano and Okuma do a 4000 size reel with rear drag for about £20.

  2. Drennan do a float adaptor which is a wire loop held in place on the line by two pieces of silicon. To attach most eyed floats you will need to use a snaplink, but the adaptor seems to work well with the newer Drennan loaded wagglers.

  3. "I think its not unusual for the angling press to publish a picture of a guy in a t shirt with leaves on the trees holding a pb in the jan issue"....

And what about all the pictures you see of river caught fish during the close season!!!

  4. A gudgeon was the first fish I ever caught. That was at a commercial. Now I have moved and am fishing club waters around Northwich, the humble gudgeon was the only fish between myself and a blank on my first session on the Weaver. At this time of year, a fish is a fish and any excuse to get out and about on those crisp sunday mornings!

  5. Hey Matt, this is not a complicated rig!! I had put this setup into a hole in the weeds and lilies in the margins, while I was fishing on the drop with corn in front of me.

The problem was I had just got my second rod set up and had missed a bite when I decided to recast the carp rig and bingo... one broken landing net!!! (this is my first season back in six years, so still on (re)learning curve)

Munkeh, look here inline bolt rig

    or here

    safety clip bolt rig

Its an american site so very easy to understand

  6. OK, so I went out for a short session tonight. And short it was too! I had tackled up with 10lb line, through a semi-fixed bolt rig (fox clip) to a braided hair-rig of unknown strength with a size six hook(it was something I had picked up in a mixed bag of goodies), using luncheon meat over hemp and corn. Got a strike on my second cast after 40 minutes at the swim and promptly landed a 9 1/2 lb common! The only problem was my landing net fell apart and is now waiting for the binmen tomorrow.

So tonight was full of firsts:

christened my new carp rod :)

    first use of a hair-rig :)

first use of a bolt rig :)

first carp in 6 years... :D

and another trip to the tackle shop needed before I can go out again

  7.

I am about to tackle one of my clubs waters which contains carp to mid-double figures, so I reckon 8-10lb mainline will be sufficient. What bs braid/hair-rig is compatible with this mainline.

As a beginner to this style of fishing (I normally "float") what is the simplest way to set up a safe rig, since this water is quite snaggy?

    Any suggestions welcome!!!!
