  1. I buy angler's mail, and Ok, its not the best value at £1.70, yes it gets hammered by Dragon Carp Direct ads but for what it is, essentially 20-25 pages of fishing, plus some ads (get them in every newspaper/mag) and a where to fish section its not that bad.

I dont profess that ill gain a staggering amount of knowledge, in fact I gain more tips from the internet and forums such as this to help me on my quest. What it does do though is to afford me some guaranteed quiet time each week to leaf through a publication about my favourite pastime. Unfortunately the internet just doesn't cut it the same as a book or magazine for me. I must be a bit old school in that respect.

  2. Have I missed some recent development? I thought the only places to catch blues were Cornwall and the West of Ireland.

There's plenty of tope fishing round that area though, Cardigan Bay is the hotspot.

No, you can get Blue sharks down on the pembrokeshire coast. I dont think its a patch on Cornwall but you can definately get them.

  3. The obvious choice over that way is Lyn Y Gors in Anglesey but then you also have Conwy water gardens on the north coast too.

I fish the river Dee up by Wrexham which isnt too far off if you're willing to get in the car for half an hour, the River Alyn feeds into this and thats a lovely little stream. Bala lake is just stunning and there's some fantastic natural sport to be found there. I forget the name but there's another fishery just down the road from Bala thats also supposed to pretty good.

Just a short trip over the other side of the national park is the River Cain, Vyrnwy and Banwy to name a few.

You're spoilt for choice if you're prepared to get out and explore really; its a lovely part of the country. Im quite envious.

  4. If I am fishing an unfamiliar lake which I wanted to find the depth in various places before I fished and I only had leger rods with me; I sometimes attatch a cork or something simiiar to my hook and after tigthening up to the lead start releasing line a foot at a time counting each time until the cork apears on the surface. I usually take a small cork or float for this when I am fishing a lake that I hadn't fished before.

If I wanted to find out whether the bottom was mud, sand or gravel I would feel through my fingers as I slowly reeled in, occasionally wrapping my lead in plasticine to imbed some bottom matter (Sand or gravel etc.)

You can also map the bottom finding bars and troughs etc this way.

If you are sensible with the size of the lead you use you shouldn't spook the fish too much, in-fact Tench and other fish are occasionaly attracted by the bottom disturbance.

Now thats a clever idea! Presumably the ledger would need to be on a running rig in order to pull the line through and to the surface then?

  5. Hello all, im extremely interested in your views here.

So picture this, you get to a venue that you're maybe not too familiar with. You've left your float gear at home, so the option is straight lead or feeder.

You find a peg and can see the usual surface features perhaps, say an island to the left, maybe some lilies closer in on the right. There are no fish topping. These surface feature are, I gather some pretty useful points that would be useful to fish to. But... what about the features under the water? Sure, you can use a marker float setup to map the underwater bars and shelves but on for a short stay pleasure session where you wouldn't want to be casting a whopping great lead around the swim, what are the options? How would I get a picture of the underwater geography?

If you were to say fish waggler or pole tactics, its pretty simple to get some idea of the depth layout without making too much of a splash and noise. If fishing a feeder or lead though, do most of you take an educated guess as to where to fish? Do you count down your feeder making repeated casts all over your peg looking for changes in depth?

Im keen to know how everyone else does this. I'll be honest in that if there are no surface features when im feeder fishing its usually a loose chuck and hope that I can attract fish to my swim, whether that be a distance I know I can hit on the spot everytime or just what I think I can handle in the weather conditions. This to me doesnt seem quite right. I've convinced myself that there must be a more knowledgeable way to do this. So come on you good folks at AN, please enlighten me...

    Forever in your debt... :D

  6. I have acces to a length further downstream towards Whalley with RADAC some nice grayling in it I took Wendy Perry there on one occasion

My club have the rights to a stretch near Whalley too; opposite the golf course?

Must take a trip there in the new season!

  7. I no longer fish matches much these days but I was discussing the use of squatts (tiny housefly maggots) with a friend and how our team used to improve them the night before a match by removing the brick dust that they came in and instead place a small amount of slightly damp peat plus a milk soaked slice of bread on top of them.

On the morning of the match they were totally transformed into much whiter, plumper, softer and more lively squatts which sank easier too.

    My question is:

Has anyone else used or heard of preparing squatts in this way or were we the only anglers who used this method of preparing them?, The guy I was talking to had never heard of anyone preparing them with anything else but brick dust to make them sink and he is a regular match fisherman.

I didnt use any peat but the milk soaked bread part was an absolute winner. As you say, they were whiter, plumper squatts for definite.

I was told about that trick from one of my old man's mates. He was a match fisherman for years and swore by it.

  8. Hello all,

As the subject line says im not so much of a newbie. I was a forum member around 2005-ish so im familiar with a few members here i think. I had a turbulent couple of years which meant I was in and out of angling for a while but now im back, the fishing's back and im loving it.

So; its good to be here with renewed vigor and enthusiasm for the sport.

Take care all, see you on the boards!

  9. Ive got some leftovers stuck outside. Checked on them a few days ago and they were mostly casters, dunno where to chuck em tho. Last thing i want is a few hundred flies outside. Guess ill just wait another week then hopefully theyll be dead and i can chuck em. Last time i forget to feed them to the fish

  10. Thanks for your help lads. They were fairly cheap spinners so it could be that they're just badly constructed or arent the correct shape like you say. I'd say 70% of the time i can feel that they are working but other times i dont feel any resistance and as it comes to the bank i can see the blade is static.

  11. Can anyone tell me why some of the time my spinners dont seem to spin?

I can tell when im reeling in that they arent spinning, but when i check it doesnt seem to be impaired in anyway. Nothing around the trebles, no weed on the line, blade seems to be able to move freely. It's baffling me

  12. Ive fished the Dee at Almere Ferry a fair few times. The confluence with the Alyn seems to be the hotspot for Barbel, only small ones mind to around 3lb. Its very shallow and with a stick float there are loads of little brownies to be had. A bit further along towards the farm it deepens off and slows down, great fun with the stick float for dace and roach although pike can be a bit of a pain around there. Around the back of the caravans on the u shape bend there is apparantly a deep hole which is reknowned for bream, never tried it though. I last went up about a month back, it was gin clear and very low hopefully it should now have a bit of colour it

  13. Prescot angling centre helpful??? You sure about that Paul? I feel like im intruding everytime i go in there! If it wasnt so close i'd go somewhere else.

Any idea where Mellor's Pool is? Saw a picture of it in the anglers mail the other week. Thought it may be the cricky but wasnt sure.

Another alternative is Partridge Lakes in Culcheth. Had a cracking day there last week, you'll need a car to get there though.
