  1. Jim, i apprechiate that repeatedly catching the same fish will cause it a certain amount of stress at the time, but if a fish say gets caught 1ce every 4 weeks, is going to become slightly accustomed to this, (anglers who have caught 'the biggy' at my local venue tell me it comes in with out a fight, like a big bream, or a wet sack). i also know of a few other similar instances locally reguarding repeated captures of big fish. i dont see this as abuse to the fish, and in terms of the fish's welfare is still better than being killed. After all we cant kill all the carp we catch just incase they grow into a record.

Sorry if i have missed the point entirely, it is quite late at night.

As for record chasing and fish weights, each to their own i guess, we all set targets, the time and effort some anglers put into catching fish such as two tone certainly deserve the rewards. not for me though im just happy getting a few bites, although a new P.B is always a + :)

  2. Leave it out, chaps. i agree with rabbit in the fact i find live baiting small fish cruel and will not partake myself, but each to their own and if zedhead is after information regarding his type of fishing then i see no problem with that,as mentioned it is an open forum and everyone can choose what they wish to or not to read.

  3. i read earlier on this thread something about Dick Walker should have killed his record carp, like a 'proper angler'? wheres the sense in that, a good angler in my oppinion is one that respects the fish and does his/her best to look after the fish once on the bank and safely return it to the water, unharmed as soon as possible. so much for carp clinics, unhooking mats etc, why dont we just all take a metal bar?!?

  4. mesh bags should sink immediatly.

can i ask while on the topic, is there any difference in presentation underwater using a mesh bag rather than a solid one, if hooking through the top of the bags, with regards to weed, silty bottoms etc?

  5. i generally find if their having it then youl catch no matter what, many people catch on pop-ups or cork balls etc.

this time of year is generally harder for catching carp off the top as temperatures start to fall and the carp have seen this method time and time again since end of april/may. they get wary and on heavily pressured venues dont really want to know at all.

one trick i find is soaking the mixers over night to soften them completely, they remain hookable if left in just enough water (trial and error) and these look like they have been in the water a while and will often put a bonus fish on the bank.

  6. hi all, i *might* be lucky enough to be guested onto a local syndicate water later this week for a day and a night session, i have fished this lake once before with no success.

the lake is about 15 acres with a small island one end, a couple of bays and is heavily packed with bottom weed which grows to the surface. depths run to not much more than 4ft and the bottom seems fairly hard. clear areas are hard to find but it is possible, and the lake is surounded by trees so lots of good vantage points. a couple of over hanging trees down one bank and there are a few rushes running against one side of the island, there are a few areas of bistalk amongst all of the weed, the lake is very clear.

the margins dont usually fish well at all so im told so my main questions are...

what baits would you feed, and how much bait would you put in??

also any ideas you may have, tactics, rigs, location wise etc will also help.

the stock is only bout 40 carp and the lake is packed with tench. carp run to 30s with 20s being the average. the lake isnt heavily fished but does see maybe 5 - 10 anglers per week.

  7. maybe use a helicopter rig so the lead sinks into the silt leaving only your bait & offerings, maybe try and use a short hooklength because i feel carp love to rummage around when feeding on particles and shorter links should increase your chance of hooking the fish rather than you getting 'stitched up' by this i mean the fish taking and ejecting the hook bait with out you knowing at all.

  8. my experience of silty lakes is if you can find any gravel/ harder areas of lake bottom then always fish to these.

in your case i probably wouldnt put alot of bait out regularly because i imagine everyone else would be doin just that.

try fishing fake popped up sweet corn with 2 real grains on a hair rig just to take the weight of the hook. fish this one inch off the bottom.

i would suggest finding an area where fish are sighted regularly and putting 1/2 a tin of sweetcorn into the same area each session and fish your baits over this.

hope this helps and best of luck, let us know how you get on.
