  1. Evening guys.

I was wondering if there was a good AND cheap (if not free) dvd recovery software out there that you may know of?

A long story short ; my very good friend of over 24 years was buried today , he was married to his wife for 61 years and she is lost to say the least. I've had a rummage round my gear and found an old dvd with him on fishing with the rest of the gang with some funny moments in it. The problem is is that the disc is BADLY scratched. DVD DECRYPTER sets off all well and good but once it hits the bad sectors it fails poorly.

A quick google on the subject pops up with a couple of ideas but i was wondering if any of you knew of any good ones?

Any help at all would be grateful , MR M.

Must have been urgent then

I'll find some paint to watch drying before I respond to the next one.

This http://www.isobuster.com/ may work. There is a paid for and a freeware version.

    Cheers

  3. Copied from another site:

"Hi - I just got this working on IE8-b2. IE8 seems to be calling out there is

a security threat, so you need to temporarily lower the security and install.

After uninstalling all Adobe add-ins, goto Tools->InternetOptions->Security

-- Following pull the 'Security level for this zone' down as far as you can.

Following, install Flash, etc. Then reset the security to the default level."

Not tried it myself though (IE8).

    Cheers

    Ian.

  4. Thanks Den

You can blank that post now (I've copied it); it has serial numbers on it. I'll have a closer read tomorrow.

DVD/CD writers use different lasers for writing to DVD and CD, but I consider it unlikely that both would give up the ghost at the same time. However, have you a USB writer that you could try?

I am not overly familiar with the AVCHD video format; it's a proprietory format used by Sony and Panasonic.

Having rooted a bit, I (personally) would bin Architect. In fact, I would remove all burning/video editing software from the PC, and reinstall one at a time, testing each one as you go.

Then have a read of this (or have a read of this first):

    http://www.jakeludington.com/camcorder/200...camcorders.html

A quote from there reads "the lousy software Sony ships".

    Cheers

    Ian.

Is there a way to estimate the number of technologically advanced civilizations that might exist in our Galaxy? While working at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, Dr. Frank Drake conceived a means to mathematically estimate the number of worlds that might harbor beings with technology sufficient to communicate across the vast gulfs of interstellar space. The Drake Equation, as it came to be known, was formulated in 1961 and is generally accepted by the scientific community.

    N = R* fp ne fl fi fc L

    where,

N = The number of communicative civilizations

R* = The rate of formation of suitable stars (stars such as our Sun)

fp = The fraction of those stars with planets. (Current evidence indicates that planetary systems may be common for stars like the Sun.)

ne = The number of Earth-like worlds per planetary system

fl = The fraction of those Earth-like planets where life actually develops

fi = The fraction of life sites where intelligence develops

fc = The fraction of communicative planets (those on which electromagnetic communications technology develops)

L = The "lifetime" of communicating civilizations

Frank Drake's own current solution to the Drake Equation estimates 10,000 communicative civilizations in the Milky Way. Dr. Drake, who serves on the SETI League's advisory board, has personally endorsed SETI's planned all-sky survey.

    :)

    Cheers

  6. How can I backup my Favourites list?

    Den

    Hi

Are you using IE7? If so, with IE7 open, go to File>Import and Export>Next>Export Favorites.

    Re your DVD drive problem.

Apparently this is sometimes caused by Sony CD Architect, OR an ASPI layer problem, though in this case I doubt it. You could remove the drive(s) using Device Manager, and let Windoze detect them again on startup.

How do you create your DVD's? Do you have two (or more) burning applications installed?

Could you download and run this http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and PM me the result?

    Cheers

    Ian.

  7. Win 98 is what's on my computer, so I use it, (if it ain't broke don't fix it), actually I preferred 3.1 and was very sorry to see it go, I don't feel a need for constantly upgrading things that still work.

True, I'm still running 98 on a laptop. Nothing wrong with it.

A-Squared http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ is a good freeware if it's any use to you.

    Cheers

    Ian.

  8. Are image settings in your browswers OK (or been changed)?

    In IE: Tools>Internet Options>Advanced

Under Multimedia, make sure "Show Pictures" has a tick.

    In Firefox: Tools>Options>Content

Make sure "Show Images Automatically" has a tick.

    Cheers

    Ian.
