Great story that, and a beauty of a fish.

Fished Hillhead - Brownwich beach (under the cliffs) from 20.00 to 01.00. High water at 23.24. The Meon sea wall was looking shoulder to shoulder with expectant smoothhound anglers - I'm not one for crowds, so I pressed on.
Wind had dropped away to nothing after a blustery East wind all day - superb warm night.
Initially fishing was a bit hampered by weed, which is quite unusual for this beach, but this eased towards high water and darkness.
bites were slow to come but as dusk settled and I was watching the rod tip nod to the rythmn of more floating weed, it heeled over in classic leaping off you rod stand fashion. Struck and it was there. For about 5 seconds.
High water came and went. A couple dogfish had snaffled up the rag/frozen peeler cocktails. But then a far fiercer bite. This time the strike went home. Soon a smoothhound of 7 - 8lb (difficult to tell exactly, struggling with my cheap spring balance) was on the beach.
A couple of quick snaps then slid her back in the water and away:
Following this, things went a bit dead and I was knackered so packed up and trudged back along the beach to the car. I spoke to some of chaps I'd seen fishing along the sea wall earlier. One said he had lost a couple of potential double-figure smoothies after fighting them right into the shallows. His pal had landed an 8 pounder, and a guy further along had beached a ten pounder.
He said he would be back tomorrow night to "get those bad boys !"
A great way to spend a Summer Saturday night. Well it's better than the telly init ?

Fished Browndown bay this evening (Sunday 07/05) from 18.30 - 10.30. High water at 20.40.
Baits were frozen peeler, sandeel and mackeral.
Not much happening until after dusk and as the tide started to ebb. Had a brief hit on a large mackeral strip fished close in.
Then on the other rod fishing sandeel/peeler cocktail at approx 80 yards had fairly gentle bites then strong pull as the fish tried to run. Result - 3lb 7oz Spotted Ray
. Returned the fish safely but not before it took a chunk out the end of my finger when I tried to get the hook out !
Had to borrow pliers from a bloke fishing near me (note to self - remember pliers).
On the next cast I think I had another ray bite, but it didn't develope.
This is a PB spotted from the shore for me and I forgot my bloody camera !
(2nd note to self - remember to take camera).

Great result !

Fishing pal Chris and I fished from 19.30 to 01.30 Saturday night. We started at low water out on the shingle spit at Hillhead, casting frozen peeler, with early smoothhound in mind.
It was somewhat slow - we managed a small one each - no more than about 2 lbs.
With the advancing tide we retreated back and walked round to Brownwich beach to fish the remainder of the flood.
I had three small thornback rays (again, on crab) and we both had plenty of shoal bass, pout and poor cod on ragworm cocktailed with slivers of squid or mackeral.
Nothing much to 'write home about', but a really enjoyable evening with that sense that things are starting to pick up

Me and the family are in the Swanage area from Saturday the 8th for a week. Taking some light beach gear with me. Any pointers in the right general direction most welcome.

"Peeler Frozen ?"
Yes frozen. But to be honest I think it was the rag they were most intersted in Five bellies, I was catching and getting plenty of bites on that alone.
"this time last year I had already caught a few bass to nearly 2lb and the crabs were peeling. But its been ruddy cold this year and up until two weeks ago we had six months of north easterlies."
Pretty much the same here. I was bringing in crabs occasionally though today - so I suppose it shows they were active.

Biggish tide today (4.8m) High tide was about 14.15. Fished from 11.00 - 17.00.
Was glad to out fishing at last. Parked in front of the Meon nature reserve and trudged my way west for about 15 minutes.
It was still breezy but not too bad but there was quite a chop and swell for this beach.
Set up one rod fishing ragworm cocktailed with peeler or small strips of squid - casting medium to longer range. Other rod fished larger mackeral or squid baits close in.
Results: 6 Juvenile bass to 1 and a half pounds.
All took the rag baits. The mackeral (works well here later) and squid were ignored. Perhaps their mums and dads will arrive soon.
Ah well it's a start !

It's what I use for much of my shore fishing - for bass and flatfish etc.
If casting longer range I will experiment with paternosters, wishbones etc., some clipped down. but kept as streamlined and simple as possible. I make my own - which I enjoy.

That was good Sam. We get stingrays in Solent. They are a particular target of mine for this summer. I've caught a few smallish ones and lost a biggun once - all 'accidental' catches.
I've a shore mark in mind thats reputed to have the warmest water along the south coast in summer and on big springs there, a low shellgrit bank is exposed where you can dig rag as thick as your finger and as long as bloomin anacondas. Should be good

Cheers, Ian. Will be fishing the beach, hopefully. I may just give it a go.
Overseas, anglers often chuck chopped bait into the waves regularly from the shore. Is this something you see in the UK?
I often fish for bass with half or whole mackeral fillet for bait. It's my practice when changing bait is to hurl the old bit into the sea in front of me. When those fish that I 've taken home are opened up, what do I find ? - they usually contain a number of neatly cut up pieces of mackeral fillet.
