  1. Can't see why wire traces are still used when you go piking. For the conger and ling, with particular sharp teeth, we use thicker mono. Don't hear of fish biting through it. When it gets a bit frayed, just replace it.

Because pike bite through mono! It's that simple.

By all means experiment with different hooks (Mick Brown's been doing a lot of it too) but a wire trace MUST be used.

    Mick Brown on single hooks

  2. I'm certainly no expert but I gather that the Somerset drains are still tough! Any big fish caught are either being kept secret or they're not being caught at all!

Apparently there have been problems with people taking fish too so the locals tend to be cagey. Don't be offended if people aren't too helpful. It's nothing personal.

The internet is a wonderful resource but places can get hammered if word gets out about specific stretches and venues.

  3. "Extreme"

I'm all for angling on terrestrial TV (what a strange idea!) but not at the expense of quality angling programmes made by proper anglers *cough* Catching The Impossible *cough*. I'm not interested in a glorified holiday programmes featuring a 'celebrity'. Plus Matt Hayes filmed in Costa Rica over 10 years ago for his Total Fishing programmes. But because he's not a "celebrity" why would TV executives be interested?

Channel 5 snubs Catching The Impossible

Why Robson Green for goodness sake? Why not Jeremy Wade, for example? His "Jungle Hooks" was suberb and I say that as someone who normally has little interest in foreign fishing programmes. Oh of course, he's not a 'celebrity'. Silly me.

Yes, I appreciate that I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face.

  4. It looks very special. I've been looking forward to this for a few years now.

It would be a travesty if this doesn't get onto terrestrial TV. You have a worldclass film maker (with the Emmys etc to prove it), one of the finest anglers in Britain (with the records to prove it) and a whole host of other famous anglers.

If this doesn't make it on TV then nothing will.

  5. Bingo - "As others have said, it's too much down to the luck of the draw". I don't see it as a sport anyway."

If you think angling "is down to the luck of the draw" then you haven't been pleasure fishing. There is no "luck of the draw" - it is up to you whether the swim you choose is going to produce fish or not. A thing called "watercraft"which can only be learned by learning to put yourself in the fishes place and deciding where THEY will be!

All I do is pleasure fish. I was talking about match fishing. But it's not an Olympic sport/game/event!

I watched the "Fish o Mania" on Sky. Awful. 16 top quality, highly skilled anglers all relying on the luck of a draw. No one was surprised that the winner came from an end peg with the wind blowing into it. He was made favourite to win by the bookies before he'd wetted a line. Granted, if i'd been in that peg I wouldn't have won but the other competitors didn't really stand much of a chance.

  6. It's not something I'd like to see. Firstly, it is boring to watch. And I'll normally watch ANY angling related programme. As others have said, it's too much down to the luck of the draw. I don't see it as a sport anyway.

People mock darts but I think it is fantastically skillful. A real test of skill and nerve. There can be so much drama. Granted you don't need to be athletic but I saw one of the target shooting competitions and they were allowed to rest their gun when firing! They weren't even holding it! And some wear jeans too.

The Olympics should be the pinnacle of each sport so Tennis and football should be out. They should cut down on half the swimming medals. Far too many of them up for grabs. The cycling should be just in the velodrome. The sailing is awful to watch.

I like a lot of the random sports that don't normally get coverage (fencing, archery, judo etc) I'm really enjoying but it could be vastly improved and streamlined.

There's even talk of golf..........

  7. Nige hasnt been with masterline for quite some time and its really nice to know that I share a forum with such paragons of virtue that exist here.

Have I ever put a livebait tank into the boot of my car and tried to take a ferry to Ireland? No.

Have I ever sold a boat and then claimed it was nicked to claim insurance? No.

Am I entitled to think this guy is a prat? Yes.

All I remember from his Anglers Mail articles was that they had MASTERLINE written all over them.

Who does he work for now? Hardy & Greys?

John Bailey, Dave Burgess, Nige Williams, Cathal Hughes, Tony Runnalls and Dave Coster all make up the Hardy & Greys Coarse Academies.

    Dave coster said;

“We’ve handpicked each of the members of the Coarse Academies very carefully and it’s a very exciting prospect to be working closely with these talented anglers. This corresponds with Hardy & Greys Ltd branching out into the coarse and match fishing areas. I feel very privileged to be in this position and I know the resulting developments will be closely followed by tackle shops and will result in some stunning products.”

  8. He just seems like a bit of prat. He's still sponsored by Masterline too, isn't he?

That Irish thing was a disgrace. Yes, he got punished but it was reckless and stupid thing to do. Mistakes that happen "in the heat of moment" I can forgive but when it requires planning etc then I'm less likely to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I don't care how many fish he's caught. He's a terrible role model for angling.

Give me Mick Brown over Nige Williams any day of the week.

  9. It's a tough one because the owner of the lake would be in their rights to kill them if he/she wanted so if you kick up a fuss then that may be what happens. But as others say, you need a licence from the Environment Agency (Section 30) to move fish from one body of water to another. This is one of the reasons why you mustn't use live baits from different waters because they may be carrying diseases and parasites etc. But you don't need a licence to "chuck 'em up the bank"............ Unfortunately.

Pike play an important role in any healthy and balanced mixed fishery. They shouldn't be viewed as 'vermin'.

Personally, I would stop fishing there.

  10. It's a cliché but stay into dusk/dark. They do continue biting when it's dark. A nice lump of anchored bread crust resulted in this whilst touch-legering after dark. I hardly fished for them last season but will be trying harder next season (I always say that though... )

It was less than a pound but it was nice to catch.

  11. A great idea I saw from someone was to just use sticky tape (insulating type stuff) to attach the rod to the frame. This way you don't have to faff around with string etc and other complicated methods of attachment. Just snip it off when you arrive. Obviously you'll have to take a roll with you for the return journey!

A bit wasteful but a nice no-nonsense, hassle-free way of doing it.

  12. That's a cracking pike. Well done. I've been fortunate enough to witness a 25lb pike on the bank (didn't catch it unfortunately) and trust me that photos never do these fish any justice at all. They are awesome in the flesh. They're just massive.

  13. Thanks for all your help.

Like you say, there is plently of fishing to be had. It's unfortunate that a lot of the river mouths are so small. It only takes a few anglers to take up a lot of the fishing.

I asked the question because on the Axe between the Axmouth and Seaton there are signs saying 'private fishing - permits available from so and so'. Fair enough but i was just wondering about the legality of it all. For some reason I thought I'd read somewhere about tidal sections being open to everyone. i.e. everyone has a right to fish them.

Thinking about it more I'm obviously just mistaken! Because you need permits to fish Christchurch harbour etc don't you?

  14. Anyone know the rules and regs re: fishing tidal rivers? Who has the fishing rights? The land owners? I thought i read somewhere about tidal sections being free to fish for all or is that only on certain rivers?

I was only wondering because I was interested in bass fishing (plugging) these types of areas but of course whenever you tell someone this they think you're trying to pull a fast one and are really after salmon or sea trout (honestly, I'm not).

Any help would be appreciated. I live in East Devon and the rivers around here are all game rivers (the Otter, Axe, Sid etc)
