  1. My mate works for a pensions company. He gets to see quite a few death certificates, and nearly all of them (bar people being killed in an accident) have "Carcinoma" as the SECONDARY cause of death! Fisrt is normally organ failure, but the cancer causes the organ failure! Therefore, most people die of cancer, but not everyone knows that.

  2. Hello again,

I was managing 210-230 regulally last summer but I was back down to 180 yesterday. I realise 230 isnt massive but I was improving well last year. Im still on the look out for something a litlle better adapted to fishing. Its full of rocks and kelp around here and swinging a lead around is not that easy. Does anyone do the xcast or a back cast ?

210-230? Nothing wrong with that! :)

  3. Went casting on the field today and was surprised that my distance is well down on that I was achieving last year. My timing must be way out. Can\'t wait to get back down to Kirkleatham with the lads and hope they can sort me out again. Looking forward to those warm summer nights having a laugh and flinging the 5 oz lead around.

Haven't been for two years! But must agree with you, always disappointing after the winter break. Roll on the warm, light evenings....always good for a few chucks and a good laugh aswell.

Hope you get your distances back.

    P.S. How far you chucking?

  4. Brought a spool of Diawa tournerment 15lb the other day to refill a couple off reels for a days fishing This was a like for like swop as I was very pleased with the line in the past . Dear but worth it I thought .

Not this time I had the line part on me about three times both on the cast and retrive, I initialy thought I had damaged rings on my rods, bit of a coincedence but not impossible but all ok there. Just a bad batch of line I think . Ever had it happen to you?

I had the right Hump

Do you use a multiplier? If so, is it possible the first couple of cast may have burnt the line? Does happen. The number of people I know who whack out a lead using brand new line and then come unstuck. Unless you are boat fishing, of course.

  5. But for how long dammo??????

Pair Trawling still not a good idea

Pairs of trawlers, dragging a large net between the two boats, have been fishing for cod off the beach flying a flag that looks like the French Tricoleur, but actually is not. The flag they fly is red, white, blue stripes (not the same order as the French flag) and is the international warning flag for boats pair-fishing. It says you will be unwise to sail between the two boats. Local fisherman are not enthusiastic. These boats come along from Newhaven and take all the fish, disturb the weed on the bottom, and leave nothing for the locals. Why cannot they fish further out in their powerful boats. Tim Loughton MP was going to take this matter up with MAFF to see if something can be done, but the pair-fishing continues.

I know, Stavey. Every Spring off Worthing there are numerous pairs of trawlers stripping the life from the sea bed. It starts when the bream arrive. One year, and this is no exaggeration, they came within a few hundred yards of the pier! I have also seen them in mid summer at low water a similar distance out from the low water mark. But, having said that, there weren't as many pairs last year, and I have it on good authority that the weed beds flourished in certain spots. But are the fish going to return to the beds? Only time (and pair trawlers) will tell.

  6. Yes, and no!

Shore fishing in Sussex has shown decline in cod / codling, eels, flounders, plaice, mullet, etc.

But there has been a marked increase in fish like smoothound, dogfish, bass (yes, bass!!), good size bream etc.

Everyone blames commercial (over)fishing, which obviously has an impact. But the fish increasing in numbers apparently prefer clean water. Spider crabs have increased dramatically off the Channel coast, and these live in clean water as opposed to polluted water. The water conditions are much better now than what they were.

  7. I am not gonna argue with you bc, you are much more qualified than i about fish movement of the yorky coast than i, its a different ball game down here the wrecks are not worth fishing in this part of the channel anymore, as far as i can see and have not been so for a very long time now, and maybe if they had protection from all types of fishing it is to late and i doubt if you would see much of a recovery now the stocks have completely dissapeared? hey ho wont be long before the mullet are back up the rivers and i can go fishing :) i mean i aint been since last september cheers.......

Yeah, it's pretty grim, unless you go more than half way to France!

  8. I honestly think some of you guys need to get real regarding the damage done with a rod and its litterally 0.

    Proof?

Anyway, it shows willing. Better to practice returning fish unharmed than dumping them on the beach.

As for wrecks, I can't believe that boat loads of anglers year in year out won't affect the number of fish living on it. It is a LOCAL niche, with different fish living together in a local area, not over miles of barren sea bed.

  9. 1) Match anglers. Chuck a load of fish in a bucket to die for the chance of winning a few quid. Some clubs are promoting catch and release, but many are not. From experience, many match anglers cannot be arsed to keep getting up of their backsides to take fish to the adjacent angler to verify, sign in etc. Answer: Need better attitude to fishing and not just think of their wallets.

    2) Pleasure anglers (shore). Most just want a day/night fishing. If a fish of a reasonable size comes along, it is a bonus and may be kept for the pot. Small ones go back. Minority of idiots, many foreign, keep anything of any size and get agressive when challenged. Answer: Send them back!

    3) Specimen Anglers (shore). Of the specimen anglers I know, all of them return their fish, even after many weeks of waiting for a good one. Answer: Have the correct attitude towards conservation.

    4) Boat Anglers. From my experience, most anglers fishing deep water marks like wrecks, chuck all the fish in a box, mainly because the fish are f@cked by the time they reach the surface. Answer: Whats conservation?

Please note: This is from my own experience and does not apply to everyone, so please do not take offence. If it does apply to you, well......

  10. A good point , spiecies differ, I cant recall catching Mackeral or gars in the dark I find pitch black pretty much pout, cod & Sole. Dusk and dawn seem to be the most prolific for the peditors.

Had gars, mackeral and scad in the pitch black on many occassions.

I know that fish feel safe under the cover of darkness, but they must still be there in daylight, surely?

I have fished whiting beaches in daylight and had nothing, but as soon as the sun has gone, it comes alive. I wonder if there are any divers that may have more of an answer.

  11. Many times while fishing during the daylight, the sun out, the water gin clear and calm, I have failed to get a bite. Then, as darkness falls, the fish go mad for your bait. I was wondering, are the fish simply not there in daylight, but much further out and come in under the cover of darkness, or are the fish there but asleep? I can't see, somehow, how fish can swim in from deeper water to feed just as the sun has gone down. Sometimes it is litterally like switching on the fishing!

Anyone got any theories on this?

  12. Tut......and there was me gonna ask you for some :D

ain't been crabbing for a couple of years now and My traps went missing from the river!! the weather hasn't been to good for beach crabs lately so hoping to get some new traps up the adur for a back up supply and hopefully pick some up from the beaches for the killer bait until the spiders show!! only problem is lack of transport so i'll have to give my bike a quick service and get cracking soon!

Ollie, bit early for the beach crabs...another few weeks I'd say. To be fair, hounds aren't fussy whether the crabs are from the river or the beach. I bagged up in the last two years with plenty of doubles and I had them on frozen crab. I usually get a few from the beach, if not, a load from the river then freeze em down. That way the bait is always at hand when the fish arrive. And no hassle trying to keep the buggers alive!!

I don't mind giving you a lift for crabbing or fishing if you are stuck for transport.

  13. Ah just bin listening tive scarborough radio and they rekon that asda has stopped selling cod fromt north sea. Is this right does tha know.

More thant likley, lad, there are nowt cods left int north sea!

(Blimey, my accent is cr@p!!) :yeah:

  14. Stavey, good on you for staying! Don't let the minority of moderators favourites push you out. You, to me, seem to be a no nonsense, call a spade a spade kind of bloke, and those who don't like it need not reply. It does appear that some people on here get the leniant treatment, where others don't.

Let's hope you future contributions are as lively and entertaining as your past ones, and let's hope not so many are deleted!

P.S. Any mullet in the cuckmere yet?

  15. Good thread.

I'm a shore angler and use clear Amnesia. Many swear by clear fluorocarbon lines as they have a refractive index very similar to water, making them virtually invisible under the water (apparently). Have tried placing different lines in a bowl of water to see which ones were visible.....they all were! The experiment was floored as you have to be UNDER the water with the lines to see if you can spot them! Haven't tried that yet!

Red lines? Someone I know tried red Amnesia for scad fishing.....never got a bite! Swapped to clear and started bagging up!!

  16. wow nice an early!!!

Spose thats my que to get my arse into gear and go crabbing soon :)

Hmmm...maybe they're in the boats. Can't see them being on the beach yet as there isn't a crab in sight!

(Get me a few crabs while your out!)

  17. Sorry your wrong there mate, I am active in Tagging, release and conservation therefore your theory dont work, and I reckon I'm not just speaking for myself some people can go to a dance and enjoy watching other folk dancing but not dance themselves, doesn't lesson their pleasure , but you are entitled to your opinion, When you find somewhere absolutely beautiful to fish , just sitting there with a rod in the water is sheer chill out,yes i love catching ,but I dont throw my toys out the pram if I dont, i will still have had a great weekend.Especially if there was good company also, which there very often is

You wouldn't say that if you caught nothing to tag trip after trip.

  18. thanks Newt for the link but i found it.....

its no good asking for opinions and then not being happy with what someone says......we are all individuals we are never going to all agree at the same time...for god's sake grow up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anglers Net needs and thrives on good debate and discussion ....

    IMHO

    Judy

So why was it stopped? Stavey was only expressing HIS opinion!

  19. The problem being Steve if you have him in your corner you may well gain one extra member aboard but you'll lose six

Come back Stavey!! Off you go Brian, and take five of yer mates with you! (If you have that many).
