  1. Oh Garfish, how times have changed, you seem to have a very short memory. Only a few years ago when you lived on the coast you went to every match with enough bait to sink a battleship, but now you live well inland and are only allowed out once on a weekend (hehehe) you have certainly changed your tune.

Yes, you are right about major International matches, they should be pegged and bait supplied to put everyone on an equal playing field, but in in a normal open, not a chance. The only chance the average angler has of beating someone of your standard is either by getting on the beach early to grab a prime spot or by putting the time and effort in an getting some extra bait or perhaps landing a bigger single fish but in your case that’s difficult because you have a reputation of getting more than your fair share of a biggies:-).

If all matches were bait supplied attendances would tumble, for starters the average chap will turn up to a match with a fivers worth of bait while on the other hand you personally would need at least treble that amount (£32 on Sunday me thinks), start charging anglers £15 for bait and then another £15 or £20 to enter the match and just see what that does to a match entry.

In my opinion you need a cross section of events to appeal to as many as possible, roving, zoned, pegged and some bait supplied matches will all have place, its pretty simple really, they will only prove successful it anglers keep turning up but if they vote with their feet like Stavey match fishing will die, how I am feeling at the mo I don’t really care either way!!!!!!!

    Well said.

    Do I know you?! :)

  2. I disagree with your point that It's only those who struggle to keep up when the fishing gets fast and furious that ask for certain baits and fish to be banned. You are corredct on one point the banning of certain fish. However, the banning of certain baits such as White Rag would benefit all. I and many other match anglers based on the south coast are in favour of bait bans and I can assure you that when the fishing is fast and furious for Whiting, Rockling, Pout Gars etc you will not see me struggling to keep up. Anyway, in those situations bait is not to important as fish are competing for food, it is more about confidence and time management and bait management. When there are lots of fish you can use smaller baits etc. The basic rule of thumb is that if you wind in a treble shot you left it out to long. One ten minute cast may catch three fish however, two 4 minute casts or less may catch 3 fish or 6 fish.

I beleive nearly all big fish caught in matches are luck are as they are rarely targeted, down here targeting big fish would lead to a blank most of the time.

Garfish, I do agree with some of your points. For instance, the banning of some baits. Whites, as you say, are very localised and often need to be dug on several tides to get enough. You either need to be single, divorced, or rich to hav a decent supply of whites! But the same could be said for reds. Most, if not all, the estuaries I know of within driving distance of where I live have a bait digging bye-law. So what are we to do to keep up with the singles, divorcees and the rich? I for one do not wish to break the law to be able to compete!

The point I made about anglers unable to keep up when the fishing is fast, has been bourne out time after time. 15 years ago there was a flourishing Zziplex league on the south coast. Every match attracted over 30 teams of five. There were no bait bans. There were lots of fish. But the same teams and anglers kept scooping the top spots and the dosh. Consequently, Mr. Average from Team Nags Head decides he is wasting 50 quid every fortnight so decides to quit. There is no league now!!

What I am trying to say is, no matter what you ban, be it bait, species etc. the best anglers will always come out on top.

  3. It's only those who struggle to keep up when the fishing gets fast and furious that ask for certain baits and fish to be banned, the sort of people who want to fish a "catch a fish, win a prize" match. If it is a conservation point, i.e. too many whiting getting slaughtered, then we all know catch and release is the way forward. As for "Cod Only" matches, or the like, there is no skill in catching one single cod amongst 40 whiting! It is luck.

  4. Our wrecking trip was pretty good, 336lb of pollack between 2 of us, 4 between 15 & 17lb. Went bassing on sunday and managed to tag & return 3 before I gave up as it was mega rough. ABM tried really hard on saturday for very little reward.

336lb between 2. That's 168lb each. An average charter boat must take 8 anglers. The average port must hold 20 charter boats. If one ports fleet went to sea and caught 168lb of pollack per person, that port would be responsible for slaughtering 26,880lb of pollack...and that's one port!! How many ports are there around the country?!! I bet all the pollack died; they normally do once the swimbladder inflates through the mouth. Some rod and line anglers are pretty much hypocrites.......

  5. Well, to sum up the fishing in my area (West Sussex), there was an ISAC match fished a week ago Saturday at Worthing with 102 competitors, many of them very good anglers and a good few England blokes fishing too. What was caught.....5 flounders, 3 of them were undersized!! Roll on the spring!!!

P.S. I did not fish, I'd rather play the lottery!

  6. Not bad for £50? you must be loaded!!!!!!!!!!! You could but a sea flyfishing rod and reel for that!

IMHO LEDs are all you need, If you like fishing in the dark perhaops more importantly not scaring the fish with bright lights then a red LED helps you keep your night vision (ie your pupils stay wide open) at the same time as letting you see a bit, its fine for baiting up but you might need white to tie a knot, at least with my eyes you do!

    Dan

Me, loaded? I wish!! I have tried various lamps, but wanted a beam from a lightweight, longlife lamp, and the Myo XP is the one. I tried a couple from Ebay, all cheap chinese rubbish that won't last a season, and not even weatherproof!! I'm well happy with it. There are people who pay out over £250 to have a lighthouse strapped to their head, and a motorcycle battery in a rucksack on their back, all for a blinding 3 hours of light!! Good luck to them!!!

  7. The smell of deisel fumes and I'm a gonner!

My mate once gorged on apples as soon as we boarded the boat. We had been steaming out for less than half an hour, and he already felt bad. After arriving at the mark and dropping anchor he yakked his guts up, and it smelt like cider!! Mmmmm nice!

  8. nice one steve.

been using a chinese import i got of ebay which is ok for the price but a red light would be ideal for late night beach sessions.

led`s are the way to go.although they dont have a decent spot beam, its all you need on a beach.

got sick of carrying around a motorbike battery and having the power cable get in the way, plus new bulbs are abou £3or 4,beeen through 2 in less than year.

might have to save up for one :)

Petzl Myo XP is a great LED lamp. It has a pre-focussed beam and three power settings. It has one white LED, some new fancy one! Also has a flip down diffuser to give a wide pool of light rather than a beam if you wish. Not bad for 50 quid, but no red LED I'm afraid!

Does red light actually give you any benefits??

  9. anyone wanting a good look at a mark should get themselves out on the next couple of tides, been digging blacks tonight and the tide was bared right out.never seen it as far back on there.

Tide in Worthing went out bl@@dy miles last night!! And it wasn't a huge tide, big but not huge.

  10. POor.

I have been watching Metcheck 2 week forecast all winter. Cant recall a time it was right beyond a day or 2.

Totally agree. Can't forecast the sun coming up that lot!!

  11. Accelerated by the industrial revolution. Don't forget that. Some people still think the world is flat.

It's called the Flat Earth society.

Some people still think there are lots of fish in the sea.

They are called Commercial Fisherman. ;)

A volcanic eruption puts thousands of tons more CO2 into the atmosphere than man has since the invention of the car!! And besides, if the ice caps melt, and the Gulf Stream decides to grind to a halt due to the inbalance of salt/fresh water in the northern atlantic, then the climate will become SO cold that northern Europe will freeze over. Problem solved.

  12. Hi folks, new to this forum.. How are you all? :D

Was wondering if anyone here could help me.

I rarely get the chance these days but hope to fish this coming weekend. I live in London and its difficult to keep up to date on catch reports!

I usually head for Eastney beach , but is it fishing ok at the moment. Brighton? Eastbourne? These are the areas i know..

Perhaps theres a better mark doing well somewhere else along the Solent??

Anyone got any helpful advice please??

    Cheers,

    Simon

Pretty poor in the Worthing/Brighton/Eastbourne area. Rockling if you like them! Few flounders here and there, better if the east wind would disappear! Pin whiting at night. That's it! I'd stay at home!!

:clap2: Lucky you. I've found it works early and late in the 'season' but you can't beat a peeler at the height of the 'season' because that's what they're doing inshore, looking for crabs and peelers give off a scent which helps them find them. I'm not saying squid doesn't work but if there's a peeler in the water, they'll find it first.

Ah yes norm but so will the eels and baby flounders, every year i fish a couple of (catch and release obviously) smoothound comps, for the last two years i have won these fishing squid only all the time, while they are kept busy catching bootlaces and flounders on their peelers and hermits i am catching quality smoothies and winning, its crazy i know and so do they  but they now do it every year to try and prove me wrong, maybe this year will be different but i doubt it, i dont mind i will just keep taking their money :)

Stavey, what if the smuts did not show?? The bootlaces and small flats would win the match!

Personally, I think that a big squid bait attracts hardback shore crabs during the summer, and, perhaps, then the smoothound goes for the hardback crab. Just a thought....

  14. I went out and bought a new set of Fuji rings for an old Shakespeare Ugly Stik today. I bought the rod about 4 or 5 years ago to go with my old original one which I bought in 1979. My old one had to have new rings fitted years ago and the Fuji's made a great rod even better. The second Ugly Stik still had the original Shakespeare rings on it, and although they were still in good nick, they have to go!

I've just sat and whipped the first ring on and it's giving me brain damage! I haven't done any whipping for a good few years and I forgot how fiddly and boring it is. Only 6 more to do plus the tip and a bit of decorative whipping by the butt. Yippee :bye2:

Use the thickest thread you can get!

  15. Hi all.

i'm new to the forum, but you may have heard of my dad, who is Danno 1 (on the kayak fishing forum). and thought i would say hi, so HI. let me introduce myself. i've been fishing for about a year, and am quite keen. Unfortunatly, i don't seem to be succesful, but i love every minute of being out there. it makes me green with envy, whenever i watch my Dad, and his mates paddle out to their mark, catch 30 or 40 fish, paddle back, and ask me if i caught anything. You could probably see me in one of their pics, the kid in the background, freezing his can off. Anyway, there you go, i've introduced myself! :cold:

Kayak fishing? Hmmm, never had much luck at that; Have had several windsurfers to 280lb before though!! Go like stink! But you can't beat a speed boat.....

  16. No wind at all now for days! Never a mind a p*ssing easterly! What are the reports saying for the next fortnight?

    Matt

Down here in Sussex, if the wind is in the east it's cr@p; if the sea is clear, it's cr@p; if the sea is calm, it's cr@p; if the sea is calm and clear, it's really cr@p; if the sea is calm, clear and an easterly is blowing, it's really, really cr@p; if the sea is calm, clear, the wind is in the east, and it's January / February...well..............

    IT'S BL@@DY AWFULL!!!!! :(

  17. hello i have a match tommorow and i know that the main tartget is going to be pout with a good chance of dogaz turning up i when i fish for dogfish i usually use a one hook running ledger with either sandeel or mackrel on i was just wanderin if anyone had any different methods that they find works better when theres not many dogaz around thank you

Use three hooks, if the match allows. You have 3 times more chance of getting one. You might even get a double shot! ;) You can also experiment with different bait combinations.

  18. I dare say there are some that would rather all mullet were put back but its unlikely to happen when they are such good eating.

    Dan

Realy? Hve you ever eaten an mullet?

    Each to their own!

    :yucky:
