  1. Yes meat is good down there my favorite place is in the sluice area, the carp were in there and feeding on my halibut 3mm pellets I was feeding, but wouldn't take a hook bait, all my biggest carp have all comefrom the big lake. but I was struggling on th big lake, so had a lot of fun down on the horse shoe lake of the surface some pics here.

simple fishing right under your feet, as the fish all go under the undercut banks, so as you say float fishing with bread, meat or pellet. feed small halibuts.

  2. Well here goes, had a bad journey down, lots of traffic, when i got there thought i had lost my wallet and check book. lucky i had put them in some where different, to where i thought they were. then went down the big lake to see what was happening. When I got down there i met Reg one of the locals that live on the site and another chap. and was told that they had, had the lake netted again last time this happened the fishing was bad. so went and had some dinner and then went of down the lake. heres the record of what happened.

    Saturday 08-08-2009

fished 2 rods one on waggler one on a running rig, tried bread, L.meat and Fusion dumbells, not a single bite

    Sunday 09-09-2009

Went down the horse shoe lake waggler fished bread in the morning, lots of pulls from small fish but caght nothing,

came in for lunch and to go out,got back about 15.00 went back down to the same lake waggler fished bread to far bank weed bank, had 2 bream 1lb and 3lb then from the same spot I had a fish, that put a real bend in the rod,or so I thought

it turn out to be a lovely little common of about 1lb went straight into the weed, then came straight out again.

Then in for dinner, Down to the same lake, as when i left there was a lot off movement in the weed, pulled the float right up the line and fished the surface with bread right on top pf the weed. Very cleaver carp these as they were pulling the bread off the hook, through the weed, they also got it off without getting hooked. Well they were all over the place so stuck with it, place a bit right in the edge just over hanging the weed, up it came took the bread, down it went strike, fish on, straight into the weed slight pull and out it came fishing a very tight clutch just in case in the net, a nice 8lb 8oz mirror carp. had a few more bits of bread taken but no more fish.

As that is where my pb came from 4 years ago and had a lot of fish from here on the big lake, fished the waggler with bread meatand banded hallibut pellet, all baits that have always worked, there were loads of carp in there feeding tails out the water but caught nothing. As it was geting dark shot down to horseshoe same story taking bread off the hook but caught nothing.

In the morning down to sluice but had no interest very hot day, moved down the bank as someone had seen a nice fish on the surface, got there put some bread on hook, looked for the fish, but fish gone, so put some hallibut pellets in and put some meat on the hook, a nice carp came in and cleared the pellets, there a long time float went pulled in bait gone chance gone, off to the beach for most of the day. got back went down little lake it was very quiet shot back to big lake all in the sluice again, not a single bite. must be a lot of natural food in there. Went back to the little lake the carp kept coming up and taking the bread off the hook without getting hooked. lots on th surface of big lake as well, but went in again fishless.

Got up and off down to little lake, Fished surface bread, again had lots of takes, went around to duffers corner as all the fish tench, bream and carp. were all on the surface, climbed in under 2 trees but in riht in th edge over the weed again very good tactic here as it turned out, up came a pair of lips, brad gone wait strike fish on straight in the weed, pulled it in close, it felt like I had lost it. suddenly felt it move, a nice chap came down and pulled some of weed of th line, still no sign, no movement again, then it went again the gent held the line, I got the net see some of the fish net under loads of weed but fish safe, a nice common carp of 5lb 8oz.

Now of to visit a castle out for about 4 hours, got back as I had caught went off down to the sluice same tactics

plenty of fish in the swim you could see the tails coming out through all the rubbish but again same old story tried active 8 dumbell this time but still no fish. so in for lunch then from 19.45 untill dark down to small lake determined to get another one. Surface fished bread again 1 common carp 7lb 10oz. at least i had 2 today.was another very warm day.

Slightly cooler day started down little lake in the morning very quiet nothing happening, then went down to the big lake normal spot trid all baits at least had one pickup but still no fish, so moved over the other side of the lake were I caught a 19lb 4oz carp last year but nothing doing there, so of down to the pool in the afternoon for a couple of hours,

on the way bach had a look in the sulice, but nothing there. 16.00 off to the little lake trid all round stlking not much movement, so went in to sleepy hollow as i called it, in edge over weed had a quick take, shot into the weed, came out easy, straight into the net. A nice common carp 7lb 10oz. in for dinner went back down but nothing happening.

    went in after dark.

Very overcast day but no rain, last day so last chance to have a few, had one bait I haddent tried super stench pellet, works on thorpe lea so why not in the sluice,so down I went with a change of rig a running rig, well same story again fish in there but on the naturals, off down the little one cast of the point opposite duffers corner, a little further round, weed goes out a far way there so, cast to the edge as normal had the problem of them getting it of the hook again, but up one came took the bread, down it went, strike fish on, managed to get this one straight to the top in the weed, in th net, a nice little common carp off 3lb 10oz,getting smaller but great fun all the same.then in for a sandwich and of to Dawlish town which was setting up for it's carnival, spent 3 hours having a look around, then home, back down the little lake talking to a guy down there he had been smashed 3 times had a go nothing had one take the bait but not hooked, the other chap then hooked one and was struggling so grabed my net shot round and landed it for him, another lovely mirror. i then got a call to go in for dinner, the guy says have one last cast as they are over were you are, so went and got my rod had a cast down by the lillies nothing happened, so pulled line in

just about to go, when up comes a carp just were I had been one last try, on with another bit of bread out it goes,

those lips are getting closer, bread goes fish on again straight into the weed put net right into it, got it and half the weed, only a small mirror but nice all the same, at 3lb 7oz. After dinner did have another go had a big fish slurping down the bread, then trod on the float, ran out of proper bread, tried fake bread but nothing, so gave up and went in.

Lessons learned find out what the fish on big lake were feeding on in the sluice rubbish, They were in there a long time when there, there was a big lake fly hatch as there were loads of swifts taking them off the water out in the middle, where the carp had been on the surface earlier in the week. A nd getting paid for all the weed removal on the small lake

  3. I just feel we all over complecate things, although I do use hook links of various types and different set ups, nearly, if not all of the biggest fish I have caught over the years. Have all come on simple straight through rigs, waggler slipped on the line with a couple of shot plus a size 8 hook, accounted for my one and only 20lb fish, plus lots of other with this method, also a ledger slid on the line a ledger stop and hook tied on accounted for fish to 19lb 4oz, but in the end it all depends on what you are after and where you are fishing.

  4. Oh well for the first time in ages didn't get to the bank today. Well cheesed off, as i had planned to go, but spent the whole day in the bathroom (putting tiles up), as the builder done a bunk in Jan, and I have not had the time to finnish it .

Anyway finish last year 2008 with a pb chub, even though finished the season with 2 blanks in a week, only 2 times I have been this year, hope it is not a sign of things to come.

  5. a pair of handcuffs still in their leather pouch, put up a good fight, hook out in the middle of the Thames down from Kingston bridge, with the river charging through, took a good 15mins plus to land.

  6. I was with him. We cast our feeders and Maple 8 & Pineapple boilies just in the middle of us, and an island. We re-casted every hour - hour 1/2, but still nothing for 6 hours.

    What are we doing wrong?

I have now fished it 3 times, the guy that runs it recons that you should fish open water swims, my friend

has fished over the back by the motorway for a night sesson, in August used a spod and method feeder tactics and did well. seems open water and finding the features is your best bet, best areas are so I have been told, the beach just to right of carpark or over by the motorway.

The 3 times I have been, I have ended up at the end of an island, first time I was lucky as i jumped into a swim which had been baite over 3 days, the guy had loads out, I ony managed 1 at 17lb 4oz, 2nd time was on method had loads of bites but only one fish 17lb 5oz. 3rd time i blanked.

found it very strange when we got back to the car, we spoke to guys who fish it all the time, who could not believe that we had blanked, but I think every one around our side had, the guy next to us had been smashed a couple of times.

  7. some nice perch there. Just got back from the little river that i've been fishing, spoke to the only 2 other guys down there, they said there are some nice perch down there. So I think it will be over to the worm and see what happens

I have been fishing down there for chub with bread and meat, in the first 4 casts I had 2 chub on meat

1 going 2lb 8oz and the other went 2lb 10oz, not a bad 4 hours of unexpected fishing.

  8. Does anyone know anything about Ashford fish farm?

tried to find some references, but to no avail....

If it is the place that I am thinking of, it is in Ashford Middlesex, its in the back and beyond. it was 3 lakes in the owners back garden, and is known about by word of mouth, he had some work done a few years back, to desilt and I heard the first 2 lakes were made into 1, and the 3rd a stock pond.

When I fished there it was a mixed fishery, had some very nice fish there but not too big, not sure what it like now, as I have not fished it for about 4 years.

  9. I agree with Rob, when i first started carp fishing, I used to just fish a ledger running on the line, straight through to the hook. The only other thing was a split shot or ledger stop. Caught lots of fish like this.

The only thing I have change is using a hook link, also a lead clip. Must admit i am catching bigger fish now.

I normally fish 2 different set ups, 1 on a running rig, 1 on a semi fixed, have found the running rig out fishes the semi fixed every time.

  10. now have a new reel, also have the bit to hopefully repair old one, sentimental value as it was the reel

I landed my one and only 20lber on.

SO thanks for the guidence, had to go to Daiwa for part, didn't think they they would have it anymore, as they don't seem to sell the reel anymore.

    mick

  11. It sounds like the oscillating mechanism has packed it.

Pretty terminal unless you get it back Diawa for repair.

Don't think your far out took most of it apart again today, found a small pin on body had sheered in half, so think unless theres a way to repair this pin, the only other thing would be a new body for it, by the way the slider gear is what sits on this pin, which would stop the spool going in and out, and cause the grinding the rest seems fine. shame I like this reel.

Daiwa seem to be quite poor to get hold off any one got any other ideas like where I might get the part, I even have the pt no.6e 85-7603

  12. Oh well had a nice days fishing for carp, used the method feeder for the first time, had loads of bites, but only one fish.

the fish almost took the rods and the pod in, the problem was the reel was making a horrible grinding sound while playing the fish in. Thought it might give up but it hang on in there, the fish went 17lb 5oz mirror.

the reel is a daiwa regal-Z4550brt, sounds ok when not under pressure, but as I say makes a terrible grinding sound when under pressure, also when you take anti reverse off and back wind. the spool does not move in and out, just stays static. took side off and had a look, could not see anything that looked out of place, although there seemed to be quite a bit of play. in main drive cog, could be a bearing problem, but not sure.

  13. what area of runnymede? does staines and the surrounding area count as this? if so it's up with a lot of debris =/

    [/quote

Dan do you come from the Staines area, if so hows it been fishing, as I would to have a go at it some time soon.

  14. Thanks for the info Mick, I'll check out the situation.

    no probs

love it down that part of the world, big difference from the heathrow area, where I live and work.

anyway some nice fish to be had from this site, but it is not a prolific lake you have to work at it.

all my big carp, have all come from this lake, from my first proper double at 16lb 8oz, to the 23lb, and my next biggest

which came out last week, all except 1 on bread. and most caught right in by the bank under my feet. as it is not to deep, just about 3.5 to 4 ft.

  16. Just got back from my yearly holiday down in Dawlish Warren, after last years trials and dribulations, of being told all the big fish had been taken out. Well I got there in pooring rain not a good start, Unable to do any fishing total wash out.

Sunday showers first thing went out anyway spoke to a few people, whom told me they had ,had some nice small bream, roach, eels, and some big carp up to 19lb. So boyd by the fact there were still some nice fish in there of I went,

always fish the waggler close in down there. Down to the sluice after about 3 cast with bread flake hook bait off it went, a nice little common carp about 4lb, fish L/Meat and pellets but no more fish, but lots of bits and lots of rain showers.

Monday had seen lots of fish both big and small, both feeding and caught but no fish for me, again a day of showers on and off all day.

Tuesday another wet day, but after going out with the family down around the seafront, and doing a bit putting, got back to the fishing, decided to go on the island this time, and again fihed the margins from where the big carp had been coming out, in went my bread hookbait, float started bobing under it went 1 bream to me about 4lb nice little fish, lost 1 big carp from round the other side of the island on L/Meat, shot straight in the reads, and shead the hook oh well.

Wednesday well high winds and a lot of rain until about 15.00hrs then the sun, well early on unhooking mat and brolly both went in the drink, soaking wet , carried on again lost 1 carp off the island same place on pellet and ledger set up, shead hook in the reads yet again, . wet and fed up went in then we went out for a walk, well when we got back it was nice and bright, decide to go to the small lake, to get a bit of action, Well when I got there lots of fish rolling on the top.

well again bread was the bait, after a few cast the float started bobing under it went Bream number 1 about 3lb then another four 2 to 3lb bream, then a nice roach about 14oz, then a nice 3lb tench, another 14oz roach, then another three

2 to 3lb bream. Well confidance back, off I went back to the big lake for the last hour before dark. This time with 2 rods

one with a ledger outfit, Just as light was fading the ledger pellet rod shot off, straigh toward the reads again, but I was not to get done this time, pulled it away in the net, a nice mirror carp of 7lb.

Thurday went down the seafront all the way to Dawlish to see the air show. Got back about 15.00 see some carp feeding in the sluice so went and got the float rod out, again bread flake hook bait straight to the under cut bank, well

after about an hour away the float went, a nice little mirror carp again about 4lb, then after another hour float went again a funny bite just like a bream, then it shot away straight under the undercut bank nice carp but shed the hook into the roots, they no where to go these fish.

Friday fished all day tried the big lake everyone catching, had a few runs but no fish, so to get my confidence back, it was down to the small lake again, fished there for about a 1 1/2hrs with bread for 7 bream between 2 to 3lb.

confidence on a high, I went for another few hours on the big lake with 2 rods, tried a roving approach, tried all my favorite swims, but not a bite, so went around a part I had not fished all week, it was between 2 trees and the carp were in and out of there all the time I was there, so I fed lots of small 3mm halibut and fished all different baits which

they picked the pellets up but just moved the bait out of the way, had a few pick ups on the floats but all dropped,

wind was getting up. So fed some more pellets put a bacon grill hook bait on both rods, the ledger rod was cast in about

as far as the rod tip, bait runner on both rods on the floor reels rested behind my bag. I was getting cold by now wind was well up, saw the rod tip tapping looked like the wind, no sign of fish, but the tip was still bouncing, still thinking it was the wind, I looked at the line, it seemed to be moving very slightly, by now i was so cold I had, had enough so decided to pack up. As I picked the ledger rod up, I felt a heavy weight on the other end it came straight to the top,

then tried to run, it didn't really give any fight, don't think it thought it was hooked, on the back i thought it was a nice fish but was shocked how big it went on the scales, at first it went to 20lb but settled at 19lb 4oz a very nice mirror carp,

so my persistance paid of in the end, I did go out again, later the carp were still there and I might of had another 1 if the rain hadn't started again, did have another pickup but no fish.
