  1. Bag limits? I for one will totally ignore any attempt to impose bag limits or a sea rod licence.

I spent 30 years buying a freshwater rod licence so that the powers that be (northumbrian water authority, NRA, EA) could stock salmon in various rivers around the country to prove how clean they were. What did they do for me? Nothing.

Bag limits? Is somebody having a laugh? I caught 50 codling last winter big enough to keep(not the stupidly small size limit) and up to 6lb+. I kept somewhere in the region of 35. The rest went back. The most bass I've ever had in a session was nine. I kept three 3lbers.

I fish a lot, at least every week, and sometimes two or three times a week. I catch nothing worthwhile on most of my trips. If I'm fortunate enough to catch half a dozen codling one night, and the freezer's empty, I'll take the lot. If I've a few fillets in there, they might go back. The point is, I will be the one that decides.

And who would be able to stop me being the one that decides? Could you imagine being asked to show your licence at four o clock in the morning on a deserted beach. In 30 years of coarse/match fishing, I could count the number of times I've been asked to show my rod licence on the fingers of one hand...

  2. Cunningly, the £30 you're supposed to send with the broken rod to cover administration or whatever its for, is approximatley what it costs greys to buy the rods in from china.

Greys are hardly putting themselves out with their lifetime guarrantee are they?

  3. Hi kagger probably less than you think mate. Looking at that pic it looks like the gulley straight infront of the lifeboat slipway which from memory has always been there. The recent sea defence improvements changed the sand distribution a bit but not all that much. The sand probably moved 100 yards right. The worst thing for me is that a little beck now flows out the sea defence and across the beach which has impacted on those worms you mention. Sadly there is now very few. The place is still a great fishing venue with potential fish holding fetures every 100 yards or so right around the bay. My personal best fish comes from that area and I know many others who have had big fish from this area. I think Paul (big cod) had a 15 pounder around there only 2 years ago. great venue only trouble is the weed.

If you want to read a bit more about your old hunting ground have a look here.

Nice link mate and some superb pics. It appears not to have changed that much after all.

I wish you hadn't put up that link tho'. You've made me homesick.

What passes for picturesque down here is a windmill in the middle of a 10 mile square billiard board ;)

  4. Seems to me the video should be entitled...

"How to turn a 4lb cod into two fish fingers"

Each to their own I suppose.

Personally I prefer not to waste any of the fillet and take my time when filleting. I spend too long trying to catch the bloody things to rush the last bit.... :)

  5. In either case, the photo was of enough fish to feed a family one or maybe two meals and they look to me about like any other fish that have been caught, killed and gutted which are normal things to do with ones you plan to eat.

One or maybe two meals  ? Either you haven't got a TV, or all that stuff we see in the media about the population of the US having huge appetites and equally matching waist lines is true?

  6. And for what its worth....

Imagine John E Ashford going fishing. He pulls up at the venue, puts the handbrake on and parks up. Then all the doors fall off his motor. Him and his mates, donning big floppy shoes, dungarees, orange wigs, scary face paints, and the latest Titan nose warmers (they're bright red and round), climb out of the car and procede to throw buckets of confetti over each other.

    All very funny. NOT

  7. Muttley said..."Tell them to get a bloody job...it ain't rocket science is it!!"

Thanks for that pearl of wisdom. I'll try that next time I'm walking along the pier. I'm sure anyone who's unemployed who happens to be fishing will pack up instantly and rush to the job centre.

I'm not condoning the wholesale slaughter of bass that goes on down there, I wouldn't and dont have anything to do with it. I'm also not going to make excuses for "parasites on the back of all of us tax payers...." as that sort of thing annoys me as much as the next bloke, but put it like this, I wouldn't like to think I had to find a well paid job in north norfolk.

Whats the old saying? There but for the grace of god...

  8. ...There is fishing, and there's fishing. The quality of how you do things is as important as the quality of what you catch. If I did go there and catch my first double, it would be as if it didn't count, if you know what I mean. I want my first double to be special, (sounds like losing your virginity doesn't it? ), and standing on a rubbish strewn pier alongside wall to wall muppets isn't my idea of quality fishing befitting the catching of double figure bass.

That is EXACTLY how me and the lads I fish with feel about it....

  9. Steve. Cromer is as near to the coast as it gets for me in Norwich, and the only time you'll see me on the pier is with a bag of chips having a stroll with the family. Its shoulder to shoulder, rods secured to the railing with bungy straps, 80lb line straight thro, rubbish on the decks etc etc.

For my part, I'd rather be on a beach somewhere out of the way without the hassle. Much as I would love to catch a double figure bass, I couldn't be bothered with the hassle involved in fishing the pier.

  10. Stavey said "..how do you educate these people and convince them to do otherwise.."?

I'm lead to believe that the majority of the big bass caught and kept on the pier end up being sold to local pubs and hotels. I'm not sure how you would "educate" people who may be unemployed and skint into returning these fish. I'm not going to pass judgement on them, tho' I wouild like to see the majority of these fish returned.

  11. Nice report m8. Did make me laugh a little - Im sorry. I think you have had a decent experience at least they never took your wallet and twoc ' ed your car.

    LOL.

When i was a kid 20 years ago (I'm 37) I used to fish the Gare quite a bit. Once I learned to drive the visits became fewer and were mainly confined to spinning for mackeral. You sort of accepted there'd be a bit of shoulder to shoulder, but people had a bit of respect for your space if you know what I mean.

We enjoyed our fresh fish, and if I gave you a chuckle, at least you got some return for the time you spent replying to my question :) . I always try and make my reports entertaining. See the leader-lines web site which is East Anglia orientated for more of my ramblings.

    Cheers Glenn.

  12. After the helpful replies given freely, I thought I'd report back.

I got up at 4 on saturday and made it down to the Gare at about half past. There must have been 20+ people fishing the redcar corner when I got there. Judging from the language and behaviour, it must've been an away day from Durham prison, but they were getting a few when the seals weren't nicking 'em! Anyway there was no-one fishing the end so i dropped in there. Two cast and two lost spinners saw me move round to the river side, just off the corner. First chuck, I had one. Same again second chuck.

"Any good mate"? said a gimp from the redcar corner crew. I told him I'd had a couple.

Then it started. A bloke came and fished 6ft to my right. Sort of acceptable. One to my left. Fair enough?

Gimp comes back, beachcaster and feathers in hand and fishes BEHIND ME on my left shoulder! His retarded mate comes and fishes BEHIND ME on my right shoulder. The gimp and the retard procede to try and empty the north sea of mackeral 4-5 at a time. What fun that must have been for them. God knows what use anyone could have for so many mackys.

For my part, I had 8 in 9 casts and left for home. All 8 were eaten the same day at a family get together. I would have fished for longer and returned what I'd caught, but I couldn't face it.

Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but what happened to etiquette in fishing?

  13. It was a report on wsf forums. Guy got a lot of hassel from the teenagers. There was also talk of drug taking etc. GUy said only time worth fishing is early mornings.

Thanks. I was going early morning anyway.

I reckon I could handle the hassle, but I dont want to leave my car and come back to find it wrecked!

  14. "...after recent reports from the south gare..."

Any chance you could enlighten us mate? I'm based in Norfolk but originally from Teesside and am home for a few days next week. I was going to bring some spinning kit up just to pass an hour but I wont bother if its going to be a hassle.

Last time I fished there, probably 15 years ago, it was getting a bit iffy leaving your car on a winters night, but I thought it'd be ok for an hour at dawn....

  15. I honestly wouldn't follow Kaggers reports, he's jinxed at the minute !

I might be jinxed, but the blokes I'm going with are bagging!

Mind you, at least I'm not jinxed in the looks department, Baron Von Holmes!

  16. Kagger - sorry for pinching an extract from your post, but it looked like there were bags of fish being caught whilst we got sunburnt. The piccie of that sole is a cracker - what a fish.

Err.... I honestly couldn't care less about the "pinching an extract". What I said was very definately tongue in cheek. I'll put a smiley or something next time. :)

As for the sole, yeah what a fish. Awesome....
