  1. over head cast on a peir is bloody lethal mate! the peir i fish (worthing) its bannned for good reason

in the day anyway! putting a 3oz grappler between the eyes of some old dear that came out of know were dosnt bear thinking about!

only fish off the peir becouse its a structure! no fish under your feet (as in i cant hit them with an under arm) give me the beach anyday!

Have been starting to try beach fishing this year. As I say, Ive only been sea angling since about last August and just caught the bug!! Started off Pier angling and just now broadening my horizons!!

  2. went down coombe pier in the rain this afternoon.me and a mate caught some fish and i drunk beer.(he was driving)

    absolutely loved it.

    thats what fishings about.

    having a mate that dont drink..lol :lol::lol::lol:

ps. 4 whiting and a small pout.

    anyone else fished today.??

Yup, went down to Deal Pier today with a mate and completely blanked. So did everyone else there, apart from one bloke that caught the smallest flatty you've ever seen!

  3. To tell you the truth shrek, that's one of the reasons I avoid pier fishing, too many people. Give me a nice quiet beach anyday. I don't think the fishing is any better from a pier anyway, not these days.

You sould come with me one day to a VERY quiet spot I know. Lovely scenery, and wildlife, and sometimes a free model aircraft display thrown in!

I might just take you up on that Mike - Thanks

  4. What you have to remember, is the pier is a public area, not just for anglers, who in some peoples opinion are a menace with their rubbish, bad language, yobbish behaviour and aggressive attitude.

A kindly enquiry as to wether you have caught something is called being friendly, and is something I welcome. It opens up the oppertunity for a nice chat sometimes.

I think you will find that the majority of the public regard us a strange for wanting to go fishing. Your attitude to other members of the public, and you are one, won't help our cause.

In case you reply with aggression and bad language, it is only intended as friendly advice.

I hear ya Mike - thats why I said I FEEL like saying, and not, I SAY, I mearly meant that sometimes people dont think about the potentially dangerous situation they put themselves in, and that happens in every walk of life. I agree that people are just being friendly, but it can be irritating on a summers day when 30 odd people ask exactly the same question one after the other, - and yes I answer them without being aggresive or rude.

I get very irritated with anglers that do not clear up after themselves as well, but I must admit Ive never fished with or near anyone who seemed to be yobbish or particularly loud - must be lucky I guess.

My comment was only tongue in cheek - Ive made a career out of working with the public, I think you read it a bit too literally.

  5. hi there

funny you should say the 2nd and 3rd shelter do well as we past them they all had anglers in but they never had much that night but they were leaving and know one fished them that night that i could see i might be wrong thou.

do you like to fish alone or dont mind a chat as if you fancy a meet on deal pier one night in the future just drop me a pm

    k2user

I go to Deal quite alot. Dont mind a chat at all. Me and a mate are going tomorrow all day. Probably won't go night fishing there for the next couple of months though (were trying out some other areas like Hythe), but I'll drop ya a line when I do!!

  6. Hiya K2,

Apart from the massive tackle loss, Deal Pier is normally quite good. I haven't been there and blanked yet (although have had some slow days!). I normally fish off the bottom deck on the left hand side, casting from the corner parallel with the beach. Last time I did that I didnt lose a single rig!!

Lug and squid seem to work well up there, but fresh mackerel also brings in its far share of fish.

I've heard that the 2nd and third shelter on the right hand side as you walk up the pier are the best fishing spots. Ive never tried them because of the flow of people walking past, but I might give it a go next week whilst the pier should be reasonably quiet (I hate it when your just about to cast and some strange non-angler type walks up BEHIND you and says 'caught anyfing?'. I always feel like saying 'no, but you almost just caught a six ounce weight travelling at 100mph in your mouth!') ;)

  7. Hi Shrek

If you are looking to start freshwater fishing a good place to begin would be a decent commercial fishery like Hartleylands or for carp fishing Monks Lake, or maybe try one of the numerous free sections of the river Medway.

A local club could be worth joining, Maidstone Victory has lots of waters around the area.

I would avoid Leybourne Lakes or similar waters till you have a bit more experience, as the fishing can be difficult especialy for a novice.

Cheers for that. I have been told Leybourne is a difficult lake to fish. Apparently the council is putting up the lease cost next year by quite a restrictive amount (which will reflect in membership costs) anyway.

I also don't want to fish a water that is restricted to just carp. One of my mates likes to have one line in for carp and line on a float.

  8. You planning on fishing a river from a boat then??? Certain things you should know about when and where you can fish.

Is this a 'wind up' Rooney, or am I just being paranoid (again)

EEEERRRR - Not a boat rabbit no - I meant Ive got a telescopic rod so its easy to carry on my MOUNTAIN BIKE so that I can ride down the paths along the Medway and fish where I like (in the free parts). Sorry - should have made that a bit clearer.

ROONEY???? NO - JUST PARANOID AGAIN!!!

  9. I know what you're saying Rabbit, but I just want to give everything a try. I've got the telescopic rod so that I can ride down the Medway with a mate and just float fish where ever we feel like stopping / looks good.

Thanks for that riverside. I've had a quick look but going to work now so will scrutinise that site tomorrow.

  10. Hi guys,

I'm new to the course fishing forum, and have recently joined the sea fishing forum. I started sea fishing last year and 'got bitten by the bug' quite quickly, and ended the year with 3 rods and more tackle than I knew what to do with!! What do you know - santa ;) - brought me a fine set of course fishing gear for Christmas - 2 rod carp setup plus all the gear (shelter, seat bed etc. etc.), a telescopic rod and a fly rod / reels (I might have bought some of that and blamed it on Santa when my wife asked!! ).

Anyway, where do you suggest I start with course fishing this year. I live about a mile away from Leybourne lakes, which is carp fishing, although I've heard they are having difficulty with council costs and maintaining the place. I believe there are some good spots in Tonbridge for Lake and River fishing, but I'd really like to hear your views.

  11. I second that - Cheers back-lash (for the advice and the offer of further advice!) - thats what its all about. :D

Well Shrek, Hythe is as good as anywhere. At certain times of the year it's dead. But look at my avatar,a 19lb Cod in December. Loads of good whiting this year on mackerel. Worms seem to seek out the smaller fish.

Fish Hythe from low up, either when it's very cold and clear, or just after a blow on a Spring tide.

End of next week is a Spring, and the weather is going to be rough just before, so a good chance of something, as long as it's at night, days are deadly anywhere.

    Cheers to Mike as well!!

  12. Strangely enough one of my favorite boat marks is just off the beach at Minster. Just beyond the spring tide low water line. It nearly always produces good fish. Bass on livebait, roker (thornbacks) on fish or peelers, sole and dabs on worm or cockle and in the winter whiting on fish, spratt worked well this year. Maybe it's a long caster's mark from the shore.

We were casting out between 40 to 120 odd yards trying to find the area the fish were feeding in. We were also using mackerel and herring as bait since we were aware whiting was probably the order of the day, although on the double hooks we were throwing in some squid on the bottom hook.

Cheers for that Mike. I may just pay Hythe a visit next week. I'd certainly like to match that Cod ur holding in ur avatar (thats got to be a once in a lifetime from a beach - the way things are going now - but I hope not!!).

    ;)

  14. Yes it's a pity I agree. However, for another 10 minutes travelling time. I can be on Hythe beach.

Looking at Sheepey, ( as we used to call it) on a marine map, it looks terriffic, lots of likely places to hold fish. Bluetown used to be very good in the sixties, conger, the odd big lobster, loads of different fish.

Alas it's gone the way of most shore marks now.

The Swale has dropped right off in the last two years, hardly saw a Bass last year, let alone catch one, and where have the thousands of flounders gone! It was full of them once.

I haven't fished Hythe either (I only got into sea angling last year). Any good there? There is supposed to be a good fishing point for flounder at Sheppey in the RSPB reserve. Have you heard of that one? We noticed the reserve sign posted about a mile after the bridge on the island.

  15. The River Swale doesn't fish well in the Winter, Spring and Summer are the best times for flatfish, bass, mullet, eels etc.

The beaches on Sheppey are quite shallow, go down and take a look at low tide.

They fish better on night tides and at the Sheerness (deeper) end.

The closer you can get to Garrison Point, the better.

The tide only rose by, I guess about 15 - 20 feet up the beech where we were fishing. To be honest, we were goning to stay later, but as it started to get dark the wind chill factor started to bite a bit (something that doesn't bother me when I'm catching, but standing around for 2-3 hours you start to feel the cold!!).

  16. Hi Guys,

I paid Sheppey a visit today with a mate, and I have to report that angling there is still slow and very weedy!

We started fishing the estuary (just to the right of the bridge for those that know it), with no luck apart from the odd large clump of weed. No takes and no sign of life - a few small snags but nothing major.

We moved after about two hours to the shingle/sand beach between Sheppey and Minster. There's alot less weed about to snag on, but again not alot to report. I caught a small Whiting (about seven ounces!!!), and the one or two other guys there and the customary 'old gent' who has fished these seas 'man and boy', all said Sheppey has been poor sport for a while.

Back to Dover for me next week!! <_<

  17. But What constitutes angling in its raw form Shrek??

For me the topic is sea angling and anything related even in the slightest sense. If you wanted to discuss bread and butter topics eg Bait, rods, lines, fishing, marks etc and it was a forum rule then I guess the Admin could quite easily enforce that and it wouldnt be down to the members here. If I start harping on about something that dont belong here then along comes Newt and gives me a swift kick in the r's region. Fishing is broader than bread and butter. There are only so many different bait types You can use and then you have to start talking about bait additives which seems to get some people off on one again :P

My advice to you Shrek is - drink the pilchard oil and dont add it to your bait.

Another pointless comment? I was talking about fishing stories, hints tips, and yes, at times politics and other stuff that is related. Why do you have to be so pedantic?

  18. Thanks NetFull, will reply in my "alter ego" as I'm at home for a change. Wasn't aware that barbs suffered from low oxygen levels, although it certainly fits the symptoms. But with three filters pushing the water around, and now a low stocking ratio (a cherry barb has now gone also leaving 5 ruby barbs, 2 small golden barbs or Shuberti as I remember them, the plec and the cory),it's hard to imagine as the water is 2/3 new anyway. I guess the water is about 80oF by the thermometer, a little on the warm side, and allowing the fact that the thermometer might be pants, the water doesn't "feel" warmer than the thermometer suggests. They are all gulping fast, but they are not on the surface as lack of oxygen would suggest. The missus wanted me to put in new sand, and new plants, but I think what I did was less harmful than her suggestion. It was clear that urgent action was needed, and there was no way to get the water quality back from dead without some harsh action and risk. But I just can't understand the rapid breathing, the rest I can put down to the conditions. Perhaps I'll try cooling them gradually down to 75oF, but with the weather now on full blast, it might not stay there anyway.

    Thanks for your reply,

    Uncle Fester Bikenut

A bit late UncleFester - but here goes!

You mention 'SAND' in your post. Theres lots of trouble with sand in your tropical tank if your not VERY experienced at fish keeping. It potentially blocks your filters. It compacts very solidly under the weight of the water, and it retains much of the detrius from the fish. Itis very difficult to clean effectively, and although the general surface area of the substrate does suggest it would have a positive effect on GOOD algae growth, generally I have found it does not because of the above reasons.

I find small gravel the best substrate at about 3-4mm across. Also you mention 3 filters. Some fish do not respond well to alot of water movement. Since it is only the surface movement ofthe water that airates the water, try pointing the directional jets of you filters at the surface. If the filters are causing a strong current in the water, remove one or two, and buy a stronger single filter that is up to the job.

    Hope this helps mate.

  19. To all and especially to the newer members

For some reason I have never been able to fathom, we seem to go in cycles with which forum section has lots of argument and contention. Sea angling seems to have the lion's share recently but chances are good (and especially when the coarse closed season on rivers starts) that another section will heat up and this one will cool down.

However, the policy here is to try and keep flaming down to a bare minium but to allow anglers to discuss topics of interest and to state their opinions. Problem is, a topic that interests Angler A might bore Angler B. It would really help when you see inappropriate comments if you clicked on the Report button to alert the mods that you saw a problem rather than leaving or, even worse, making a sharp comment in return. Otherwise it is easy for a topic to spin totally out of control before one of us happens to read it. The Report button sends an email to all the mods and to Elton and includes your comments/reason-for-reporting if you want to make any.

Re: creating new forum sections - been there, done that, don't like the results for the most part. Other than the core sections here for coarse and sea angling and the 'off topic' section, all the others have been created at the request of users. Take a look at the Fish Keepers one as a typical example. No posts from August 15 until we got the new software and Elton sent email to all registered users. FishSim is much the same and while the tech section does have activity, you are less likely to get good answers these days than when those topics went into the general Non Fishing section.

Thanks for the reply Newt. Its good to know - especially for the new members like myself - that the administrators are watching whats going on.

I fully agree with what you said, although I think MaidstoneMikes main gripe may be with the actual memebrs and not the administrators - his point being that alot of the conversation is not around the 'bread and butter' topic of angling in its raw form. Not much you guys at admin can do about that! Its down to the members !
