Just recently used the thermals from Uni Qlo, £7 or £8 per peice, for skiing and rate them very highly. In the past when static fishing in the bitting cold, i have set up a small BBQ next to me, toasty and the smell of cooking sausages is really something to warm you up.

Not sure if this is of any help....can you get to the other side? You mention over hanging tree's, if one is slighlty upstream of the line your fishing you could hang a bag of maggots and adjust the size of holes for feed rates.

I'm a fan of the Normark and in my opinion there the best match rods ever made. I've looked at the Hardy range and if I was you I'd stick to the Normarks. You still get plenty Normarks on ebay including the older Team Normarks which are "the dogs".
Have to agree with tigger, I bought a second hand microlite from Mr Middy and I have to say it's an absolute pleasure to use and cost very little. I can use it to trot all day long without the arm ache I used to get.Unless you really want that "box fresh" look, I don't see the point in adding a zero to what you pay to get the same from a brand new rod

Steve-It does not really go beyond 12 feet deep but varies . It also has variable speeds, part of it actually being tidal. I was going to concentrate on the deeper/ slower runs on the non tidal, and follow an hour either side of high tide in the tidal range. I am following the logic that deeper slower runs is where the bait fish will be shoaling this time of year so in theory the preds will follow.
I think for the time being i will leave the resovoir alone. Maybe start a new thread when I have a bit more expeirence
As for rods I am intending to get a Whychwood Sharpshooter Spin - 8ft, 20-50 casting weight, which from a previous thread seems to be recommended as a good general spinning rod.

Been a while since I posted, although can often be found lurking.
I intend to have a serious crack at lure fishing fishing over winter. Having already read advice on the rods & braid required I would like to know what sort of lures I should be getting to create a reasonable lure set. In particular any brands/styles I should look out for. I saw a previous thread that spoke very highly about Ondex
I will mainly be fishing a small river(quite snaggy in places)containing perch, plenty of jacks and the odd double figure pike, although may also have a go on a small resevoir from the bank

When you do chose your swim, make sure you plumb it before fishing, look for holes and shelves in the depth, the holes and by the shelves are natraul shoaling places, also deeper swims as the weather has turned cold, fish tend to move deeper in the cold weather as mentioned by others cover is at a premium on canals, so anything that provides shelter is a good starting point.
To be honest what rabbit said about the matches is an excellent idea, although remember to try and figure out why these swims are productive at this time of year, you could then take that to other waters where match has not been fished but apply the same theories,

When you come in to Brighton, at the end of Lewes Road, you can head straight down towards the sea front, instead at the end where the "level" (small flat park with skate park in it) is turn left up Islingword road, you can't miss it, it's a whoping great big steep hill!!!!!!!!!!!!! The tackle shop is at the bottom of said whoping hill.
Saying that, I have a suspicion that he would point you in the same direction that I have, so please don't go to far out of your way, there is also a tackle shop in Lewes itself that might be worth checking out, however I don't know what is called or where it is!!! Try using the search option in forums it might be listed there, type sussex ouse
On the pike, just above the weir directly across from the Anchor has seen pike show in the past, it's aslo quite deep there, so may be worth crack as the weather gets colder. There are apparently a "few" barbel downstream from the weir as well.

Morning chaps,
I am looking to fish the Sussex Ouse very soon, north and south of Lewes, has anybody any experience of this river? I have been told that Barcombe Mills and the Anchor Inn pretty are good. I've also been looking at the drains at Pevensey, again, any ideas? I was looking to fish for Chub and Pike.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I have fished in and around the Anchor at Barcombe Mill, to be honest your better of fishing the tidal stretch below the weir and beyond, coming from brighton, before you turn down the small lane to the anchor you go on a bridge over the river, check out down stream from there
Above the weir there is a network of channels with carp, (big)chub,bream,tench,perch roach and aparantly pike, but it's very small and slow flowing and I would say is a real challenge to put a good bag together. You can get tickets from the farmhouse near by, be warned though,the guy that owns the house is not particularly friendly
Maggot feeder is often quite good on the lower stretches, but as said it's tidal.
I know there are other people who fish the lower ouse so they would be able to provide better advice.
If you any where near Brighton, drop into "fish face" tackle dealer's on Islingword Road (next to Southover Street), the guy that runs it is very friendly and always willing to advise on where's fishing.
If you can do a recce before you fish it would give you a much better idea of whats going on, purely for the fact that the EA change the Upper channel water levels in preparation for winter. and it's quite a maze of tributries etc, it's a good fews hours of wandering around

Your right!! I seem to have lost it!! Sorry my only suggestion is the streamripper but as you most probally worked out it does'nt have a timed record facillity.
The only other option would be to leave stream ripper on record while you go out then chop the file in a editing suite.

I'm not sure, however the sourceforge site offers lots of variations on the theme so it might be an idea to have a root around there, use capture/recording as your keywords and take it from there

Looking for a program to record an asx radio stream which plays in WMP.
The ones I've seen so far either cost or have limited(10 minutes) recording time. Really looking for a free product which will encode an MP3 ideally. Also timed recording will be required.

When downloaded-Open the compressed folder-read the intructions- it's simple to do- when you've place the plug-in files in right place in the winamp folder it will become part of your winamp set up- When you start to listen to radio it will give you the option to record with no time limits- however unless the stream is marked with the individual songs it will only record in one long session- which esstianlly means you will have to put your own markers in the mp3 to allow you to forward through it
Sorry i've just read that again and I can see you mean Window media player rather than winamp!! I am not sure but try using Winamp instead and follow the above instuctions

For me personaly it's when you drift into your surroundings whilst watching your float/quiver, bird & water sounds, drone of the airplane in the summer sky it's almost zen like, ahhhhhh lovely
Then WALLOP!!!! something attempts to rip your rod from the rest or the floats zip into the dark water- and your heart rate goes the roof.

Floating bait,hiding in the undergrowth,then some dark shape appears below inspecting what's on offer, and then gently nudges it. Pure anticipation of what may happen, although sometimes the dark shape figures out what your up to and disappears.
I have tried to explain this to non-angler's and they just don't get it. But it means more fishing for me!!!
I have agree this should be a proper nice conversation about the "joy" of our pursuit- there's enough arguements already in other threads

I will always do a recce if I have not fished the area before. I will then make a mental note of the various swims and pack tackle accordingly. It adds to the excitment, seeing new swims, working how to tackle them, spoting large chub etc. I have a number of times gone for "a nice country walk,just the two of us" along various rivers......
It's true that the preparation bit, the night before for me, is all part of it. The excitement of what the next day will bring, although there is also something to be said for the "sod it" let's grab a couple of hours
